Huy & robert a call to call
1. Computer Assisted Language Learning
‘a CALL to CALL’
Phung Van Huy & Robert Cunningham
This presentation is submitted as a part of the first assignment of SLS 600 course ‘Introduction to SLS’ instructed by Prof. Thom Hudson, SLS UH Manoa
phunghuy@hawaii.edu - robertcc@hawaii.edu
6. “...any process in which a learner uses
a computer and, as a result, improves his or her language.”
uh-oh!
?
what does he mean by ‘computer’?
CALL = desktop/laptop computers
in language learning?
what is ‘improve’?
How do we know that?
8. ‘computer’ & ‘improve’
“...not include simply the canonical desktop and laptop devices we label computers...but the networks connecting them, peripheral devices associated with them and a number of other technological innovations such as PDAs, mp3 players, mobile phones, electronic whiteboards and even DVD players, which have a computer of sorts embedded in them.”
(Levy and Hubbard, 2005)
as cited in Hubbard, P. (2009:1-2)
• learning efficiency: learners are able to pick up language knowledge or skills faster or with less effort;
• learning effectiveness: learners retain language knowledge or skills longer, make deeper associations and/or learn more of what they need;
• access: learners can get materials or experience interactions that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to get or do;
• convenience: learners can study and practise with equal effectiveness across a wider range of times and places;
• motivation: learners enjoy the language learning process more and thus engage more fully;
• institutional efficiency: learners require less teacher time or fewer or less expensive resources.
...anatomized in Hubbard, P. (2009:2)
9. ah...CALL is merely about teaching &
learning language with technology!
No big deal!
not really…
CALL is a new & rapidly evolving academic field.
12. It applies research from the fields of second language acquisition, sociology, linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, cultural studies, and natural language processing to second language pedagogy, and it melds these disciplines with technology-related fields such as computer science, artificial intelligence, and media/communication studies.

13. CALL primary issues
●Teacher Education in CALL
●Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL)
●Natural Language Processing/ Corpus CALL
●Virtual worlds/ Gamification
●Intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (iCALL)
●Computer Mediated Communication (CMC)
●Second Language Acquisition and Technology (SLAT)
●Language Teaching and Learning Technologies
➲ The most important aspects of CALL currently may be global communications and how pedagogical strategies can be implemented to make the best use of the technology in language instruction.
We looked at the conference calls for papers /journal issues (Special editions)/table of contents in books & reviews in CALL in recent years; asked people in the field via email and selected these issues to present.
14. Research Methods in CALL
“Although quantitative studies probably dominated in the early literature, qualitative and mixed-method studies are now common…” ~ Hubbard, P. (2009:5)
CALL is interdisciplinary per se.
➲ various research methods and data collection/analysis.
●qualitative/quantitative;
●empirical/phenomenal;
●practical/theoretical;
●experimental/ethnographic.
➲ common academic criteria:
●Originality
●Significance
●Rigor
