From Hello World to Real World: Creating a Production-Grade Container Environment - Bill Maxwell & Shannon Williams Containers are lightweight, portable and easy to orchestrate, so the enthusiasm for running applications in them is understandable. Once you get past the "hello world" moment of deploying a single container app, though, you quickly realize that running complex apps using containers in production takes a little more work. Bill and Shannon will walk through building a production-grade container environment from the ground up: from the first deployment of a container, through considerations for building a registry, to introducing container monitoring and logging and plugging containers into your existing CI/CD. They'll look at the transition from scripting and automation tools to cluster management and orchestration, and how service discovery and application templates quickly become key elements to deploying complex applications. The journey will continue on to container networking, load balancing and config injection, as well as how to manage secrets, define access control policies, and provide visibility and control for your new container service. Along the way, Bill and Shannon will be demonstrating different tools, talking about some of the issues you'll run into, and discussing lessons the community has learned about production-grade container environments so far.

But a growing number of users are starting to run it locally on developer machines as a fully-contained DevOps platform. In our May meetup, we discussed some of the benefits to developers of running Rancher locally. In this meetup we demonstrated: Building a local implementation of Rancher Leveraging CI to run local builds Deploying complex applications locally for testing The benefits of isolating dev environments Our discussion and demonstration was led by Chris Urwin, Rancher's UK DevOps Lead. Teleport is an SSH system which we’ve fallen in love with. There are some great security features, of course: - two factor authentication right out of the box - acts as ssh certificate authority issuing short-lived credentials - commercial options for role-based access control But the features which we find most compelling are the ones you can’t get as easily with the likes of OpenSSH: - session recording which can be used for audit or to refer back to from troubleshooting tickets - session sharing so that our customers or junior staff can learn-by-doing, just like having dual controls on a car - NAT-piercing to help manage devices within customer networks that do not have direct Internet connectivity We have been using Teleport on a number of projects and with several customers: - a remote probe deployment to debug a strange, intermittent connectivity problem (given as a talk at UKNOF 40 in conjunction with David Farrar of Exa Networks) - training sessions with customers’ technical staff to show them a slightly unusual systems administration request — and the resulting session recording is an excellent reference for next time their staff encounter a similar request for changes - paralleling pair programming we have been able to “observe” or “navigate” while junior staff “drive” the console to perform systems or network adminstration for the first time I’ve evangelised Teleport because I feel its use fits with our philosophy of openness. Teleport could complement the knowledge sharing that goes on within network operations teams, and help senior staff work out the playbooks and improve operational procedures for their junior staff. At least one service provider was inspired by my longer Teleport presentation at NetMcr and set their junior staff the background task of moving all out-of-band access to their POP infrastructure to Teleport. I hope that their use of this tool empowers their junior engineers to take on more work, while satisfying any regulatory or audit requirements that security staff worry about.

Scaling Monitoring At Databricks From Prometheus to M3

A Web Application Firewall may cause fear that it doesn’t fit into the DevOps methodology. But what if a WAF is involved very early in the DevOps process and not just at its end? The problem is that when a WAF is added to production, the impact on the application is tested too late. Application developers get extremely late feedback and the WAF can probably break the application. I will show a way how to integrate a WAF and its testing into the deployment pipeline. It should already be an integral part of the application testing during the continuous integration and before the application can go to release. The audience will also learn about the Web Application Firewall ModSecurity and its OWASP ModSecurity Core Rule Set. It is the first line of defense against web application attacks, like those described by the OWASP Top Ten. The Core Rule Set is mentioned as one of the possible precautions against A10:2017-Insufficient Logging & Monitoring.

As the world of system and application deployment continues to change, the sys admin and security community needs to change with it. With agile development, continuous deployment, the pace of change in IT has only increased. Add in Dev/Ops and the traditional sys admin and security processes just don’t work. How can you rapidly deliver servers and applications while making sure they are built reliably and securely. Rackspace has been developing a tool to help them design, deploy and security assess complex configurations for customers called Checkmate. Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
