Both Apache Pulsar and Apache Flink share a similar view on how the data and the computation level of an application can be “streaming-first” with batch as a special case streaming. With Apache Pulsar’s Segmented-Stream storage and Apache Flink’s steps to unify batch and stream processing workloads under one framework, there are numerous ways of integrating the two technologies to provide elastic data processing at massive scale, and build a real streaming warehouse. In this talk, Sijie Guo from the Apache Pulsar community will share the latest integrations between Apache Pulsar and Apache Flink. He will explain how Apache Flink can integrate and leverage Pulsar’s built-in efficient schemas to allow users of Flink SQL query Pulsar streams in realtime.

More and more applications are using Flink for low-latency data processing. Flink unifies batch and stream processing using one computation engine. However in reality, in order to really unify batch and stream processing, it requires a data system offers one unified data representation for both batch and streaming data. Nowadays, streaming data is typically stored in a log storage or messaging system, while batch data is stored in distributed filesystem and object stores. That means that data scientists still need write two different computing jobs to access same data stored in different data systems. Apache Pulsar is the next generation messaging and streaming data system. It was originally built at Yahoo, and has graduated from Apache Incubator and become a Top-Level-Project. Pulsar separates messaging serving and data storage into two layers. Such layered architecture provides high throughput and low-latency while ensuring high availability and scalability. Pulsar’s segment centric storage design along with layered architecture makes Pulsar a perfect unbounded streaming data system, which can well fit into Flink’s computation model. In this talk, Sijie Guo from Apache Pulsar PMC, will introduce Pulsar and its layered architecture and segment-centric storage, detailing how this architecture can well integrate with Flink to provide elastic unified batch and stream processing.

The highest message delivery guarantee that Apache Pulsar provides is 'exactly-once', producing at a single partition via Idempotent Producer. Users are guaranteed that every message produced to a single partition via an Idempotent Producer will be persisted exactly once, without data loss. However, there is no 'atomicity' when a producer attempts to produce messages to multiple partitions. From the consumer side, acknowledgment is a best-effort operation, which results in message redelivery, hence consumer will receive duplicate messages. Pulsar only guarantees 'at-least-once' consumption for consumers. It creates inconvenience and brings in complexity when you use Pulsar to build mission-critical services (such as billing services). We introduce Transaction support in Pulsar 2.8.0 release, to simplify the process of building reliable and fault resilient services using Apache Pulsar and Pulsar Functions. It provides the capability to achieve end-to-end exactly-once for streaming jobs in other stream processing engines. This presentation deep dives into the details of Pulsar transaction and how Pulsar transaction is applied to Pulsar Functions and other processing engines to achieve transactional event streaming. We will cover how Pulsar transaction works and how Pulsar Functions offers transaction support using Pulsar transaction.

At Librato, a Solarwinds company, we run hundreds of Cassandra instances across multiple rings and use it as our primary data store. In the past year, we embarked on a process to upgrade our fleet of Cassandra Amazon EC2 instances from instance store to instances using Amazon EBS and attached elastic network interfaces (ENIs). We find running Cassandra on EBS gives us the flexibility to choose the best instances for the best performance of our workload while saving us significant costs on infrastructure. In this session, we discuss how Librato operates Cassandra on EBS. Topics include how we chose the right instance for our workload, use detached EBS volumes and ENI mobility to reduce MTTR, use mixed EBS storage types for the best cost/performance tradeoff, debug performance issues, and continuously monitor Cassandra to get the most from AWS. We also look at performance tradeoffs made in the implementation of storage engines of large data systems like Cassandra.

The last few years have seen the emergence of Serverless as a paradigm for event streaming. Its very simple programming model has attracted developers in droves. At the same time, its ability to elastically scale has simplified operations significantly. Combined together with the ubiquity of their presence across all cloud providers, serverless today has become the leading choice to do event processing at scale for a lot of companies. In this talk, Sijie Guo from StreamNative will explore how the serverless paradigm is applied to event streaming in Apache Pulsar, a next-generation event streaming system. Pulsar provides native support for serverless functions where the events are processed as soon as they arrive in a streaming manner and that provides flexible deployment options (thread, process, container). He will describe how these serverless functions make data engineering easier and share the real world usage of Pulsar Functions.

Overview of the Domain Name System (DNS). In the early days of the Internet, hosts had a fixed IP address. Reaching a host required to know its numeric IP address. With the growing number of hosts this scheme became quickly awkward and difficult to use. DNS was introduced to give hosts human readable names that would be translated into a numeric IP addresses on the fly when a requesting host tried to reach another host. To facilitate a distributed administration of the domain names, a hierarchic scheme was introduced where responsibility to manage domain names is delegated to organizations which can further delegate management of sub-domains. Due to its importance in the operation of the Internet, domain name servers are usually operated redundantly. The databases of both servers are periodically synchronized.

A contemporary network service heavily depends on domain name system operating normally. Yet, often issues and caveats of typical DNS setup are being overlooked. DNS (like BGP before) is expected to "just work" everywhere, however, just as BGP, this is a complex protocol and a complex solution where a lot of things could go wrong in multiple ways under different circumstances. This talk is supposed to provide some assistance both in maintaining your own DNS infrastructure and in relying on service providers doing this.

Ruby has a lot of standard libraries from Ruby 1.8. I promote them democratically with GitHub today via default and bundled gems. So, I'm working to extract them for Ruby 3.4 continuously and future versions. It's long journey for me. After that, some versions may suddenly happen LoadError at require when running bundle exec or bin/rails, for example matrix or net-smtp. We need to learn what's difference default/bundled gems with standard libraries. In this presentation, I will introduce what's the difficult to extract bundled gems from default gems and the details of the functionality that Ruby's require and bundle exec with default/bundled gems. You can learn how handle your issue about standard libraries.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.

Are you wondering why everyone is talking about the Flutterwave scandal? You’re not alone! It’s been in the news a lot. We’re going to tell you all about the Flutterwave Scandal in a way that’s easy to get. Keep reading, because we’re going to share the whole story with you. The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Market Impact The scandal shook the entire fintech market. Flutterwave’s competitors saw this as an opportunity and started to attract customers who were leaving Flutterwave.
