In a corporate world, we review our employees to determine job performance. In our home, we tend
to treat our house-staff such as Nannies, Caregivers and Housekeepers differently. This article is for
the purpose of understanding whether your Nanny is good at her job and providing the needs of
your children. Here's some things to consider;
1. Punctuality Nannies are relied on very much, and if she arrives on time all the time, then this is the best possible start
to a progressive, responsible nanny.
2. Your Child's Reaction If after working for some time, when the nanny comes into the house or room, you want to see
your child light up like a light bulb. If you see fresh excitement in them, then your nanny has built a positive relationship
with your child.
3. Your Child's Feedback Added to the point above, if your nanny is doing well in building the relationship, your child
will likely be a chatter box of 'Nanny News', with things like; Nanny said this, Nanny does that, etc. It's important to not
be jealous of this, be aware that your nanny seems to be doing well with your child.
4. New Knowledge in Your Child Let's take this "child's reaction" a little further. If while being the 'chatter box', your
child shares new things they have learned and new tasks they can perform, be aware that your nanny is providing
educational play for your child. This is something I'm incredibly grateful for and suggest you would be too.
5. Accident Free for 101 days Let's face it, kids are going to get into accidents from time to time. A slip and fall or
bumped a coffee table is something you may hear occasionally. But! This should be as rare as possible. The less
accidents you hear of, the better your nanny is at providing a safe play environment.
6. Clean Play Areas A definite contributor to being accident free is cleanliness of play areas. No toys to step on or
blankets to trip over, makes it easier to have fun, learn and be safe. It is also a positive lesson for your child to always
be in a clean and tidy area.
7. Clean Faces Naturally you want to see your child clean. You don't want to come home to a child covered in finger paint
or chocolate syrup; so knowing your nanny creates fun time with your child and then cleans play areas AND your child
is very positive.
8. Quality Feedback If you are at work all day, you may only know a small portion of what is happening with your child.
A good nanny will provide notes, day end reports, and regular verbal communication of any issues, successes or simple
concerns about your child. This is also the time you can discuss solutions and rewards for the noted items. Remember,
you are the parent, and the nanny is simply an extension of your values and child care practices.
9. The Creative Solution Nanny If your nanny provides creative solutions to issues or concerns with your child, or even
just for something to improve in your child's life, you have a nanny who cares. This is an amazing thing to see, and you
should cherish it, knowing that when you're out, the nanny is doing her best for your child out of love.
10. Happy Nanny - Happy Child The last, but not least point here, is a happy nanny. If when you communicate with your
nanny, she seems happy with her job of caring for your child, then you can rest assured, your child will feel happy too.
I hope that you find many, if not all of this list of points to be checked off in the 'yes' column. Since a happy and positive home
is what you desire for your child, knowing that you have a good nanny can be a comfort when you need to focus on daily
work tasks. If you feel there are any other things to see in a 'good' nanny, drop me an email at the link below; I'd love to hear
feedback and comments any time. Until next time,
Patrick
