12. Meeting with the Authorities,
Civil Society and the Diplomatic Corps
13. “one outstanding “emblem of vitality” in this country,
which is the “Tree of Life” (Shajarat-al-Hayat).
14. “The ancient kingdom of
Dilmun was thus called
“the land of the living”.
As we ascend from those
vast roots – which spread
over more than 4,500 years
of uninterrupted human
presence – we see how
Bahrain’s geographical
position, the talents and
commercial abilities of its
people, together with
historical events, have
enabled it to take shape
as a crossroads of mutual
enrichment between peoples”
15. “The country’s greatest riches shine forth in its ethnic
and cultural diversity, and in the peaceful co-existence
and the traditional hospitality of its people”.
16. “The numerous national, ethnic
and religious groups that co-exist
in Bahrain testify that we can and
must live together in our world,
which in these decades has
become a global village”
17. “In spite of progress and so many forms of social and scientific
achievements, the cultural disparity between various parts of the
world is growing, and destructive attitudes of conflict are
preferred to beneficial opportunities for fruitful encounter”
18. “Let us think instead of the Tree of Life, your symbol, and to the parched
deserts of human coexistence let us bring the water of fraternity”
19. “I am here, in this land of the Tree of Life, as a sower of peace, in order to
experience these days of encounter and to take part in a Forum of dialogue
between East and West for the sake of peaceful human coexistence”
20. “These days mark a precious stage in the journey of friendship that has
intensified in recent years with various Islamic religious leaders, a fraternal
journey that, beneath the gaze of heaven, seeks to foster peace on earth”
21. Respect, tolerance and religious freedom. These are fundamental themes, recognized
by the country’s Constitution, which lays down that “there shall be no discrimination… on the
basis of sex, origin, language, religion or creed” (Art. 18), that “freedom of conscience is
absolute”, and that “the state guarantees the inviolability of worship” (Art. 22).
22. Immigration – “about half of the resident population are foreigners,
working in an evident way for the development of a country in which,
despite leaving their native countries behind, they feel at home”
23. “Let us guarantee that working conditions everywhere are safe and dignified,
that they foster rather than hinder people’s cultural and spiritual growth;
and that they serve to advance social cohesion, to the benefit of common
life and the development of each country” - (cf. Gaudium et Spes, 9, 27, 60, 67).
24. Environment. “How many trees are cut down, how many ecosystems are devastated, how
many seas are polluted by our insatiable human greed, which then comes back to bite us”!
25. “I think especially of the monstrous and senseless reality of war, which everywhere
sows destruction and crushes hope. War brings out the worst in man: selfishness,
violence and dishonesty. For war, every war, brings in its wake the death of truth.
Let us reject the logic of weapons and change course, diverting enormous military
expenditures to investments in combating hunger and the lack of healthcare
and education. I grieve deeply for all these situations of conflict”
26. Yemen ; Let there be an end to the clash of weapons!
27. Friday, 4 November 2022 - AWALI
Closing of the "Bahrain Forum for Dialogue: East and West for
Human Coexistence" at Al-Fida' Square of Sakhir Royal Palace
29. “It is a striking paradox that, while the majority of the world’s population is united in facing the
same difficulties, suffering from grave food, ecological and pandemic crises, as well as an
increasingly scandalous global injustice, a few potentates are caught up in a resolute struggle for
partisan interests, reviving obsolete rhetoric, redesigning spheres of influence and opposing blocs”
30. “bitter consequences if we continue to accentuate conflict instead of understanding,
if we persist in stubbornly imposing our own models and despotic, imperialist,
nationalist and populist visions, if we are unconcerned about the culture of others,
if we close our ears to the plea of ordinary people and the voice of the poor, if we
continue simplistically to divide people into good and bad, if we make no effort
to understand one another and to cooperate for the good of all”
31. “I would therefore
like to propose
three challenges
that emerge from
the Document on
Human Fraternity -
Prayer, education
and action”
32. Prayer, the opening of ours hearts to the Most High, is essential for
purifying ourselves of selfishness, closed-mindedness, self-referentiality,
falseness and injustice. Those who pray receive peace of heart;
33. “The followers of the religions are men and women of peace
who, as they journey alongside others on this earth, invite
them, with gentleness and respect, to lift their gaze to heaven”
34. Religious freedom: - “compelled religion cannot bring a person into a meaningful
relationship with God”. Any form of religious coercion is unworthy of the Almighty, since he
has not handed the world over to slaves, but to free creatures, whom he fully respects”
35. “that places of worship are always and everywhere protected
and respected, and that prayer is favoured and never hindered”
36. “where opportunities for education are lacking, extremism
increases and forms of fundamentalism take root”
37. “An education that is not rigid and monolithic, but open to challenges and sensitive
to cultural changes; not self-referential and isolating, but attentive to the history
and culture of others; not stagnant, but inquisitive and open to embracing
different and essential aspects of the one human family to which we belong”
38. “it is unworthy of the human mind to think that power should prevail over reason,
to bring the methods of the past to present-day issues, or to apply models based
on technology or mere convenience to the history and culture of human beings”
39. “For it is not enough to say we are tolerant: we really have to
make room for others, granting them rights and opportunities”
40. Three urgent educational priorities.
1 - First, the recognition of women in the public sphere and their
freedom to exercise their social and political rights” (cf. Document on Human Fraternity).
41. 2 - “the protection of the fundamental rights of children”
42. 3 -“I would stress education for citizenship, for living in community, in respect
for one another and for the law. Then too, the particular importance of the
“concept of citizenship”, which “is based on the equality of rights and duties”.
43. “reject the discriminatory use of the term minorities
which engenders feelings of isolation and inferiority”
44. Action - “it is not enough to proclaim that a religion is peaceful;
we need to condemn and isolate the perpetrators of violence
who abuse its name. Nor is it enough to distance ourselves
from intolerance and extremism; we need to counter them”.
45. “This is why it is so necessary to stop supporting terrorist movements
fueled by financing, the provision of weapons and strategy, and by
attempts to justify these movements, even using the media”
46. “The West can discover in the East remedies for those spiritual and
religious maladies that are caused by a prevailing materialism. And the
East can find in the West many elements that can help free it from
weakness, division, conflict and scientific, technical and cultural decline.
47. “It is important to pay attention to religious, cultural and
historical differences that are a vital component in shaping
the character, culture and civilization of the East”.
48. “It is likewise important to reinforce the bond of
fundamental human rights in order to help ensure a
dignified life for all the men and women of East and West”
