a biography of Saint Faustina Kowalska, and the story of the devotion to divine mercy

1. SAINT FAUSTINA
AND THE
DIVINE MERCY

2. Born in (Głogowiec, Łódź Voivodeship, August 25, 1905
Died in Łagiewniki, Krakow, October 5, 1938)

3. She was the third of eight siblings, children of the marriage of Stanislaus, a carpenter
and farmer, and Marianna Kowalska, who raised them with great spiritual discipline,

4. At the age of
9 she took
her First
Communion in
the church of
San Casimir.

5. In 1922, she
traveled to Łódź
and worked
for a year in
Marjanna
Sadowska's
store to support
herself and help
her family.

6. Since age seven
she felt a religious
vocation.
At age 18,
Faustina asked her
parents permission
to enter a convent,
but they denied
her.

7. She decided to
give herself to
the vanities of
life, ignoring the
voice of grace.
Yet she was not
at peace and
continually felt
the calling.

8. In the middle of a
dance, she seemed
to see Jesus crucified
who said to her -
"My daughter,
how long will you
make me sufffer?

9. She went to the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus de Kostka and asked the Lord to tell her
what to do. After deep prayer and asking for forgiveness , she heard a voice
that told her “Go immediately to Varsvia; there you will enter a convent "

10. The next morning, without a change clothes, without the permission of her parents
and having said goodbye to only one of her sisters, she took a train to Warsaw.
She enter the church of Santiago, on Grojeka Street, attended mass and, at the end,
asked Father Dabrowski for guidance. He left her under the care of Mrs. Lipszcowa,
a very Catholic woman with whom she stayed while looking for a convent.

11. She went to the Mother House of the
Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady
of Mercy, where she was finally
accepted, and after a year of saving to
be able to pay for a trousseau, in August
1925, the feast of Our Lady of the
Angeles, she entered as a postulant.

12. She worked in the
kitchen and was
given the task of
cleaning Mother
Barkiewez's room
and caring for her
during her illness.

13. In 1926, she was sent to the novitiate of Józefów,
in Krakow, to finish her postulant period,

14. She was tempted to leave, but the Lord came
to her again and made her persevere

15. and on April 30, at age 20, she took the habit as a novice, under the name of Sister
Maria Faustina of the Blessed Sacrament. - The name "Faustina" means "blessed",
"fortunate" and could be a reference to the Christian martyr Faustinus.

16. She was warned that
she would enter
there as a lay sister
and that, due to her
low level of
education, she might
not reach higher
levels in the order
than those consisting
of cooking activities,
cleaning and
gardening

17. In April 1928 she made vows as a nun and
was sent to a convent in Vilnius, Lithuania,
where she also worked as a cook

18. later, she returned to Vilna and met Michał
Sopoćko who supported his mission

19. In May 1930, she was transferred to a convent in Płock,
Poland, where she stayed for almost five years.

20. February 22, 1931 - the first vision of Jesus that asked her to
paint a picture of himself. Jesus appeared dressed in white
and beams of red and white light emanated from his heart.

21. Among other things, Jesus asked her to paint an image of
Himself, just like the image that she was shown and that it
should contain the inscription "Jesus, I trust in You."

22. Three years later, after her assignment to Vilnius, the first artistic
rendering of the image was made under her direction.

23. Jesus told her that
He wanted the
image of Divine
Mercy to be
"solemnly blessed
on the first Sunday
after Easter; that
Sunday will be the
feast of mercy ”.

24. Eugenio
Kazimirowski,
made the portrait
under the
instructions of
Sister Faustina.
The image was
presented and
publicly venerated
in Ostra Brama
(Vilnius, Lithuania)
between April 26
and 28, 1935

25. But the most
famous image of
divine mercy was
made by
Adolf Hyla,
offered in thanks
for salvation of his
family from
the war.

27. Mercy trust is achieved through this
devotion which comprises of
1 the message of Divine Mercy,
2 the Chaplet of Divine Mercy,
3 the Image of Divine Mercy,
4 the Feast of Divine Mercy and
5 the hour of mercy

29. In Vilna, Faustina met Father Michał Sopoćko,
the newly appointed confessor of the nuns.
Sopoćko was also a professor of pastoral
theology at Stefan Batory University.

30. in 1933 Father Sopoćko insisted on a full
psychiatric evaluation of Faustina by Helena
Maciejewska, a psychiatrist and physician.
She was declared mentally healthy.

31. Sopocko advised Faustina to start writing a
journal and record the conversations and
messages of Jesus that she was reporting

32. An overlay of the face of Jesus in the Image of Divine Mercy
on the well-known Shroud of Turin shows a great similarity.

33. In November 1935, Faustina wrote the rules
for a new contemplative religious
congregation dedicated to Divine Mercy..

34. In December, he visited a house in Vilnius that he said he
saw in a vision as the first convent of the congregation.

35. She was
transferred to
Walendów,
southwest of
Warsaw. He
reported that
Jesus said to him:
"My child, do
whatever is within
your reach to
spread devotion
to My Divine
Mercy, I will make
up for what
you lack ”.

36. In the last years of her life, the inner spiritual sufferings
and the ailments of the body increased: tuberculosis
developed that attacked her lungs and digestive system

37. She died on October 5, 1938, at the age of 33,
of which 13 were lived in the convent.

38. On November 25, 1966, his remains were taken to the chapel, later
consecrated as the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Krakow. After her
beatification, her relics were placed on the altar of the chapel.

41. On April 18, 1993, day of the Feast of Divine Mercy (Second Sunday of
Easter), John Paul II declared Sister Faustina blessed in S Peter, Rome.

42. She was canonized on April 30, 2000, the second
Sunday of Easter, also called Divine Mercy Sunday.

43. “I saw the Blessed Virgin who told me: Oh, how pleasing to God is the soul that faithfully follows the
inspiration of his grace. I gave the world the Savior and you must speak to the world of his great mercy
and prepare the world for his second coming. He will come, not as a Merciful Savior, but as a Just Judge.
Oh, how terrible is that day. Established is the day of justice, the day of divine wrath. The angels tremble
before that day. Speak to the souls of that great mercy, while it is still time to know mercy. If you keep
quiet now, on that tremendous day you will answer for a great number of souls. Don't be afraid of
anything, stay faithful to the end, I accompany you with my feelings (Diary 635). " wrote Sister Faustina.

45. The promises of Divine Mercy
For the devotion to this image and to the chaplet
that he entrusted to Faustina, Jesus promised to
grant the following spiritual graces:
1 By the veneration of the image, the soul that
venerates it will not perish;
2 the soul will be defended as the glory of Christ;
3 the soul will have a container with which it can
go to the Fountain of Mercy to collect graces;
4 the soul that lives in their shadow [of the rays of
Mercy] will not be reached by the just hand of God;
5 By the Hour of Divine Mercy (D. 1320), nothing
will be denied to the soul that asks for it on the
merits of His Passion;
6 By the propagation of Divine Mercy
throughout her life, the soul will be protected by
Christ as a loving mother protects her newborn
child, and at the time of death, she will not be a
Just Judge, but a Merciful Savior;
7 By approaching the Fountain of Life (Christ)
on the Feast of Divine Mercy, the soul will
receive the total forgiveness of guilt and
penalties;
8 By the Novena, the souls that are
presented to Christ (those mentioned in the
Novena) will draw strength, relief, and all
the grace they need to face the difficulties
of life, especially at the hour of death;
9 By the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, they will
be enveloped by His Mercy in life and
especially at the hour of death;
10 For the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Christ is
pleased to give everything they ask of Him;
11 For the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, to
inveterate sinners (when they pray it), Christ
will fill their souls with peace and the hour
of his death they will be happy;
12 With souls who turn to His Mercy and
with those who glorify and proclaim it,
at the hour of death, Christ will behave
according to His infinite mercy.
