Features of
a Narrative
Text
What is a narrative text?
Narrative text serves to inform
readers by telling them a story. It
can be real or not.
What are the purposes of a
narrative text?
1. To tell a story
2. To tell a sequence of events and
experiences
Examples of a Narrative Text
1. Plays- For example, the
musical play Wizard of Oz and
Camp Rock.

Characteristics of a Narrative
Text
1. There is a development of the
story starting with the beginning,
middle and end.
Characteristics of a Narrative
Text
2. In every narrative text, there is
a where and when it took place
or what we call setting.
Characteristics of a Narrative
Text
3. There are characters presented
in the story.
Types of Characters
a. Protagonist- The main character
of the story.
b. Antagonist- The villain
Types of Characters
c. Round Characters- These are the
characters that change throughout
the story, may it be from being
good to bad or vice versa.
Types of Characters
c. Flat Characters- These are the
characters that do not change
throughout the story.
Characteristics of a Narrative
Text
4. Conflicts can be seen in the
text.
Types of Conflicts
a. Person vs. himself- The conflict is
internal. A character must overcome
his nature or make a choice between
two paths- the good and the evil,
the right and the wrong.
Types of Conflicts
b. Person vs. Another person- The
conflict is external. The conflict is
between two characters in the story.
Usually, it is the protagonist against
the antagonist.
Types of Conflicts
c. Person vs. Society- The person
is against a man-made problem
(e.g. bullying, slavery). In the
story, the person is forced to fight
these problems.
Types of Conflicts
d. Person vs. Nature- The person is
against any force or element of
nature. It could be a sea creature
such as sharks and octopuses or
land creature such as bears and
tigers. It could also be the natural
catastrophe such as tornadoes,
storms and earthquakes.
Characteristics of a Narrative
Text
4. In every narrative text, there is
always a lesson at the end of it.
