Proud pug mom
Hi, I’m Brittany!
Setting yourself up mentally and emotionally to
succeed in your role.
While self care also means spa days and happy hours,
this talk is about caring for yourself at work.
How do I define SELF CARE?
What do I want you to take away from today?
THRIVE IDENTIFY ACQUIRE TOOLS
don’t just survive in
your first few years
on the job.
you “power place” and
grow your confidence.
to navigate difficult
conversations and
outta-this-world
assumptions.
Chapter
oneTHRIVE, DON’T SURVIVE.
The unspoken truths about the PM role
You are now at the center of
CREATIVITY, VULNERABILITY, and REGULAR UNCERTAINTY
You have inherited everyone else’s
TO-DO LIST
You’re surrounded by educated guesses
*COUGH* HYPOTHESES
The New Product Manager's Guide to Self Care by Silvercar PM
I’m a bright-eyed, brand new product manager
STRAIGHT OUTTA CONTENT.
This 440 page book was dropped on my desk
SPOILER. I DIDN’T READ IT.
I discovered that I had the mendable yet challenging
DISEASE TO PLEASE
I didn’t know what best practices to look for
BUT I INTUITIVELY KNEW TEAM DYNAMICS
WERE “OFF”
3 years ago at Hotwire
One day, while in the office kitchen, I asked a more experienced PM,
“Do you worry you’ll be fired if you make the wrong decision?”
To which he laughed, took a big breath, and replied,
“EVERY DAY, BRITTANY.”
“
Let’s sit with that for a second
Fast forward to 9 months ago
Learn from the experts
Two days of hands-on training
ERASED TWO YEARS OF BAD HABITS
Books, articles and webinars
COMPLIMENT CSPO TRAINING,
THEY CAN’T REPLACE IT
Feeling around, figuring it out = surviving
LEARNING FROM EXPERTS = THRIVING
Trive tip #1
When you first start out, your victories
and failures will feel much larger due
to a lack of relative experience
Therefore, it’s essential to ground
yourself by connecting to your greater
“why” for taking on this role
Connect to a greater “why”Thrive tip #2
How can this role help you help the world?
What lessons can this role teach you about people,
teams, business, or life itself?
How do you want to be treated in your role?
How will you treat others?
Thrive tip #3
Prioritization is an art, not a science
Be seen at work
“Keeping your head down will not
keep you from getting shot, so you
might as well keep your head up to
see the bullet coming.”
CARLA HARRIS
Vice Chairman, Morgan Stanley,
Author, Wall Street Badass
Thrive tip #4
“
Assume everyone around you
knows more than you
= SURVIVING
Assume everyone around you knows a
fraction of a fraction of what’s going on
= THRIVING
You had a role and area of expertise before
this one. DON’T SELL IT SHORT
Thrive tip #5 You have a point of view.
Share it!
You’re hangin’ with the HiPPOs.
Loud voices, egos, expertise, passionate
disagreements, disagreements that
trigger you to react, clam up, or just say
“OK, we’ll do it.”
Act from integrityThrive tip #6
Start a PM journal
LAST QUARTER I:
managed a hybrid team, working with
global stakeholders and a product
development agency for the first time!
THIS QUARTER I WILL:
Thrive tip #7
Real life example
Thrive tip #8 Ask for the help of other
scrum teams
Dedicate 1-2 weeks to
JOIN OTHER SCRUM TEAMS + MEETINGS
See how scrum masters, developers,
designers and PMs jive! Learn how you
want to work (and how you don’t).
Although we speak in
sprints, product
management is truly
an endurance sport.
Thrive tip #9
Endurance sports
aren’t all sprinting,
choking on water or
climbing 2,000 feet in
elevation.
There are smooth, peaceful
moments too.
Find your rhythm
AND MAINTAIN IT
Thrive tip #10
Chapter
twoIDENTIFYING YOU POWER
PLACE
+ GROWING CONFIDENCE
There’s a secret ingredient to this recipe.
TIME
You’re in your power
place when you’re aware
of:
what you enjoy doing
what comes naturally to you
what you don’t enjoy doing
what doesn’t come naturally to you
CONFIDENCE
New experience + power place (repeatedly)
=
Chapter three
TOOLS TO HANDLE DIFFICULT
CONVERSATIONS
But first, the disease to please
It’s real.
It sucks.
It takes practice to change.
One interaction at a time.
Break this habit by building up the HONESTY HABIT.
“I don’t read the acceptance criteria”
You are not an army of one.
Bring unhealthy interactions to light.
“I’ll quit and go make $50,000
more somewhere else”
“
Thrive tip #11
Ask every stakeholder:
What is your definition of success?
The biggest mistake of my career has been
assuming we all define success in the
same way
Thrive tip #12
Real life examples from 5 months ago
GENERAL MANAGER OF B.U.
We will deliver all 3 features in the quoted 12 weeks
OPERATIONS STAKEHOLDER
If we get even 80% of all 3 done, we’ll be in a great place
ENGINEERING TEAM
We will successfully deliver at least 1 of the requested features in 12 weeks
STAKEHOLDERS IN GERMANY
We will implement all 3 features and market feedback will be positive
When your decisions
are challenged
Keep two questions in your pocket.
Question 1
What do you disagree with about
how this [thing] was handled?
Question 2
What would you have done
differently?
Thrive tip #13
Sleep on it
Let your mind and emotions rest in times of difficult
discussions or interactions. You’re new to this,
let yourself be.
A good night’s sleep brings fresh ideas.
Thrive tip #14
At the end of the day
Ask yourself one question.
Thrive tip #15
Did you leave it better than you found it?
That’s the job
Thank you!

We have trained employees from multiple companies such as Deloitte, Salesforce, JP Morgan, Bank of America amongst many other companies across all industries.
  8. Found my first corporate job on craigslist (Hotwire.com!) 6 years ago feels like “the old days” EA - CM - PM Also love helping others grow
  9. My definition of self care is setting yourself up mentally and emotionally to succeed in your role. While self care also means spa days and happy hours, this talk is about caring for yourself at work. Frustrated by how much time I spent “figuring it out” when first stepped into the role. We’re all talking about how to get into product management, but we’re not talking about how to thrive as a new PM
  10. Thrive don’t just survive in your new role Identify your “power place” and grow your confidence Acquire tools to navigate difficult convos and outta-this-world assumptions
  11. The unspoken truths about the role The stuff no one tells you about on your first day, month or even quarter
  12. You are now at the center of CREATIVITY, VULNERABILITY, and REGULAR UNCERTAINTY You have inherited everyone else’s TO-DO LIST (or so they think) You’re surrounded by educated guesses *COUGH* HYPOTHESES It’s important to realize that the idea of DO X, GUARANTEE Y happens rarely applies anymore. You’re in the realm of business cases, argument building, debates and educated guesses
  13. Insert sarcastic hooooray! Being surprised by what you’re going to be in the middle of can be incredibly stressful. My first year. People were excited to be PMs, they got to prioritize things… but they didn’t describe what an emotional ringer my first few months would be
  14. Hardly speaking at standups Some days, standups take 30 minutes JIRA board looks like an bomb went off Have trouble grooming two stories in an hour
  15. In the office kitchen I was raw, vulnerable asked my coworker “do you worry you’ll be fired if you make the wrong decision?” “every day Brittany”
  16. Worried about being fired? Every day?? How can we do our best work when that’s what’s on your mind? You can’t.
  17. 2 years of struggling I can see the forest through the trees!! I got CSPO certified and CANT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH! Scrum Alliance, Agile velocity
  18. NOTE -- many PMs think we know “scrum” already… CSPO training proved we were way off! Speak to your manager about the value of taking this training. If work won’t expense it and you can’t afford it yet, I’m leaving the best sites to reference when starting out as a PM / PO.
  19. Think of developers: when they first join your team, they’re not experts at sizing. It takes trial and error, their initial estimates can be way off. They’re sizing with a new team etc. When you get caught up in releasing bugs, rolling back a release, taking down a location from the booking flow. (Chicago O’Hare example), or getting to anxious, STOP, and connect with a bigger “why”
  20. Ask yourself and answer these four questions
  21. Problems have various solutionsYou start with a problem, or even a solution. And you find that the more people you involve, the more you need to accept that build products is a TEAM process No one person can control the outcome You’re co-creating together. PM provides desired outcomes. Things don’t end up as you imagined, but they solve the same problem, be open to this.
  22. Send fewer emails, walk over to more desks.
  23. Most of the time, people have no idea what you’re up to. Remind them. Bring past experience from other roles to the table. Are you aware of considerations or dependencies that haven’t been brought up?
  24. Does anyone know what HIPPO stands for? Hippo= Highest income person’s opinion. Looking back at a difficult experience. A failure. A misstep.. Did you act with integrity? If not, what does it serve you to remember for next time?
  25. In my first year, my fellow PM on my team looked at me and said. “Yeah, sometimes, you’ll look back on your year and say, “man, what did I actually do??” NO, NO, NEVER, BYEEE
  26. Example journal entry from my Google Drive
  27. Take the time to look at other teams JIRA boards, their backlogs, attend their standups and sprint rituals. Witness how they engage with one another. SCRUM MASTERS ARE YOUR FRIEND
  28. The idea of endless “sprints” doesn’t sit well w/me Endlessly sprinting through projects, development life = exhausting Instead, I frame it as an endurance sport. (Also Oregon Trail as an analogy works surprisingly well!)
  29. VERY IMPORTANT! (Anyone who is EWW to endurance) The more experiences you move through, the highs and lows start to seem a little less intense, they blend into other parts of your adventure
  30. How do you know you’ve found momentum? You’ll FEEL IT across sprints. Down hills, then up, then down again A noticeable rhythm of telling your team a story, preparing them for the work, developing, releasing, analyzing the product will take form. YOU are the conductor of a train Attempting to replace tracks directly in front of you crushes momentum. Learn what it feels like to establish, speak to, and promote momentum. Stakeholders should lay the train tracks miles ahead of you (this is how you can have the space to establish momentum with your team)
  31. Growing your confidence, honing your skills, gathering experiences… it requires time.
  32. When I first became a PM, I said to myself, “in one year, I’m going to be a senior PM” You can carry confidence over from your previous role You can fake it, But nothing replaces time. You can’t cheat time. There’s no other way. Experience after experience, speeding up, slowing down in that endurance run, that add up to new skills, confidence
  33. You need to dedicate the time to sit down and write this out. Only YOU know this. See how this takes time? Being in this position reduces the chances of fear ruling the conversation. Sitting across from a stakeholder and sharing “I don’t understand your area of expertise” is liberating, not embarrassing.
  34. Remember momentum? I released my first bug to my users in the 3rd month as a PM, and I panicked Today, I acknowledge that RIGHT NOW, we are NOT OK, but we will BE OK
  35. Difficult conversations are where our greatest opportunities to grow lie
  36. I still find my head nodding along to someone else’s benefit as they speak, but I don’t need to Changing how you respond versus react will take time… and I hope you have a manager where you can share that this is a growth area for you. GIVE EXAMPLES
  37. As I stepped into the role at Silvercar, I came across some very skilled, yet challenging developers. Didn’t like being on teams, came from an agency, You are now the steward of a team. You are managing personalities. You need to watch out for team health Report things that don’t feel healthy Going to human resources changed my quality of life at Silvercar
  38. Explicitly ask, (15 minute interviews per stakeholder, per project), share findings, bring difficult conversations (or immediate alignment) to light. CONTEXT: Stakeholders in Germany funded three projects. We hired an external dev agency to work on it. That agency quoted 12 weeks to accomplish all 2 projects Major misalignment - but we accomplished 2 out of 3
  39. CONTEXT: Stakeholders in Germany funded three projects. We hired an external dev agency to work on it. That agency quoted 12 weeks to accomplish all 2 projects Major misalignment - but we accomplished 2 out of 3 Led to a very uncomfortable, but necessary conversation - week before project At week 6 we regrouped, couldn’t do all 3
  40. Everyone has an answer to the first question. Few have an answer to the second. Listen to the ones who have an answer to the second question.
  41. I had a really hard time being SO NEW at something.
