EXL Month 1 - Leadership Portfolio Assignment
The Organization that I chose to join is the MEISA (Music & Entertainment Industry
Student Association) organization, and the mission statement of MEISA is:
* To provide a forum for students participating in music industry education programs
to interact locally and nationally with educators and representatives of the music industry
* To advance the students’ knowledge, experience, and skills, in furtherance of career
goals in the music industry
* To participate and engage in programs and activities organized by MEIEA, i.e.
conferences, seminars, workshops, and other activities that further students’ objectives
* To interact with students nationally and locally who are participating in music
industry education programs at other colleges and universities
* To acquire mentorship, career guidance, and counseling by interacting with music
industry educators and representatives from the music industry.
Situation
I selected the MEISA organization because it gives a great opportunity to connect and
network with other student in the music and entertainment industry, it gives me the
chance to interact with like minded peers, beyond my classmate, who are working
towards the same goal and are in the same career path as me; and also to engage in
activities and programs organized by MEISA
Task and Desired Results
As a result of my Leadership Skills Assessment, I found that there are many areas of my
leadership skills that need improvement. For starter my influence or ability to get others
to follow my vision and me, I can get people to see my vision but once I get there I don’t
know what to do next. My priorities is another skill I feel like needs improvement, along
with my assumptions about people, I’m not the best judge of character so I don’t always
know how to deal with people or how to motivate them; and last my staff development
also needs improvement. But on the other side I have a highly effective integrity, I’m a
man of my words and I always try to do the right thing regardless of the situation; I’m
also good at creating positive changes in myself and others and always receptive to new
ideas. I’m effective but always try to find new ways to improve skills such as problem
solving and removing obstacle that prevent me from achieving my goals, positive attitude
even in the face of adversity, having a clear vision of what I want to accomplish
personally and professionally, self discipline and the ability to stay focus on results and
personal accountability.
With that said, by joining this organization I intend to put myself in leadership positions
that would help me improve each and every one of those skills if possible in order for me
to become an effective leader.
