3. Dear ClubSwan Members,
I am glad to present this new, totally revised edition of the ClubSwan
Directory.
ClubSwan is in its eleventh year of existence; its original objective of pro-
viding extensive support and assistance to Swan owners, however, remains
unchanged. Swan’s vision is also unchanged: we are a company which prides
itself not only on the quality of our boats, but also on the reliability of service
that we are able to offer our customers.
ClubSwan has established a comprehensive network of services for its Mem-
bers. In this Directory you will Ànd a list of Yacht Clubs which offer tem-
porary membership to visiting Swan owners, Service Centres inspected and
authorised by Nautor’s Swan, and Marinas which will have special regard to
visiting Swan boats.
This year’s edition of the Directory also includes sections titled Charts, Dis-
tance Tables and Navigational Resources; with the extensive information they
provide there is every possibility that all the locations listed will be visited by
ClubSwan Members in the coming months.
The Itineraries from Pietarsaari to Palma will be of particular interest to
Swan owners picking up their yachts from our factory and sailing them to the
Mediterranean. This is only the start: future editions of the Directory will
include other recommended itineraries based on the experience of ClubSwan
Members.
Another section of the Directory that I’m sure will appeal to our ClubSwan
members is the Yard Historic Registry. Here you will Ànd drawings and
technical speciÀcations for every model built by Nautor’s Swan from 1966 to
the present.
Last but not least, the Membership Card included with the Directory will en-
able ClubSwan members to visit the facilities listed and to take full advantage
of the privileges available.
As part of our efforts to continuously improve the ClubSwan experience,
we also welcome feedback. Please feel free to contact ClubSwan by e-mailing
clubswan@nautorswan.com. We will be pleased to receive your comments and
suggestions.
On a personal note, I wish you all good sailing and fair winds and look for-
ward to meeting you at sea!

navigation resources, from
meteo sites, to distance

sky charts and a link to a
website where you can create

40. Grib download
Grib is the software used worldwide to transfer weather patterns
between international meteo centres. Designed to minimise Àle
size, it gives information based on latitude and longitude and
is therefore easily applied to maps. It can be downloaded and
used on any laptop running the appropriate Windows software.
It is ideal for yacht’s low bandwidth reception because forecasts
for several days can be sent in an e-mail attachment of a few kb
when just one synoptic chart from an ordinary website takes up
50-80 kb.
www.grib.us
After downloading a free Windows software called Ugrib, grib.
us users can customise their Grib information which is then
updated every six hours to provide a seven day forecast. This site

The B&G company has developed a new product called Deck-
man which adds Grib information to its traditional tactical and
routing software. Deckman has an animation feature which al-
lows users to watch weather patterns developing over a seven-day
forecast. An “Optimum Routing” option plans routes avoid-
ing areas with waves predicted to be larger than a user-deÀned

www.saildocs.com
Appropriately dubbed “Internet services for the bandwidth
impaired,” Saildocs is an e-mail based service which provides
straightforward Grib information. Supported by Snailmail and
running on Viewfax, Saildocs guarantees low bandwidth require-
ments and can run via radio e-mail.
www.siriuscyber.net/wxfax/
Supplied directly by Snailmail, Viewfax is another Grib software
that requires minimum bandwidth and is compatible with down-
loads via radio e-mail. It also now supports downloads directly
from Saildocs.
www.meteofrance.com
On top of its usual marine meteo information, Meteofrance is
developing Navimail, a mail based, low bandwidth service that
will supply Grib and other meteo information. This free soft-
ware, still under beta development, will include a Mac version.

41. Global Weather Sites
www.wetterzentrale.de
This German site charts every imaginable weather condition
including wave height, wind speed at 10 mt altitude and more for
up to 126h ahead. It also provides links to 5 weatherfax serv-
ices. GFS Meteograms are available for more proÀcient weather
analysts.
Navigation Resources - Meteo Sites
www.windguru.cz
Originally created for wind and kitesurfers, this site has become
an international reference point accessible in 19 languages. Look
here for detailed weather and wind direction forecasts for coastal
locations around the world. Access to this site’s more advanced
features require a WindPro subscription.
www.meteoconsult.fr
A professional but expensive global meteo site which offers map
services and direct contact with routers. Skippers can submit
proposed routes and discuss options which will allow them to
maximise cruise speed while staying out of the worst weather.
www.onnpassage.com
This site provides links to weather sites. Useful and simple, it lists
its links by geographical area, language and technical scope.
www.passageweather.com
This site is dedicated exclusively to sailors. Well organised and
easy to navigate, it allows users to view charts, which are divided
following geographical areas, directly from their computers. Un-
fortunately, it has a high bandwidth requirement.
www.theyr.net
This pay-to-view site provides extremely accurate wind charts
with various animation options and meteograms for speciÀc loca-
tions. Also available is a Grib service with its own free download-
able software (Windows and Vista only.)

www.bbc.co.uk
The BBC’s weather site contains shipping bulletins, buoy ob-
servations, tide tables, Atlantic weather charts, surf reports and
coastal forecasts. An interesting feature is the “inshore water
forecast” which observes the Thames Estuary up to London.
www.metoffice.gov.uk
Prepared for England’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA),
the Met OfÀce website is user friendly and easy to navigate. Its
“marine weather” section gives fast access to gale warnings for
both inshore and offshore areas making it a complete resource
for sailors.
www.weather.gov/om/marine/home
Full of detailed text and graphic forecasts for the whole of the
North Atlantic, the US National Weather Service’s website offers
forecasts in both text and chart format. An interesting map-to-
text feature allows users to click on a speciÀc region and retrieve
its forecast in text. The division of coastal regions is extremely
detailed: the area from Manhattan to Long Island, for example, is
divided into nine separate marine areas.

Hosted by the Italian magazine Nautica, Eurometeo provides a
variety of weather information. Its most useful feature is a link to
Italian marine forecasts and weather information.

dreds of locations in Italy and a seven-day graphic forecast for
the seas around Italy, Croatia, and Greece.

does have a wide variety of observations and forecasts for Spain’s
coastal areas including the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Distance Calculators
www.dataloy.com
A powerful marine calculator, Dataloy has a current database of
6500 ports and harbours worldwide. Users can also upload new
harbours and marinas and suggest updates to the data base. This
site is very easy to use: just enter a “start” and an “end” port:
Dataloy will then calculate the route and waypoints. Total mileage
and headings for each portion of the route are displayed and if
an average speed is entered Dataloy will also display the estimat-
ed time of voyage. Alternatively, you can use Dataloy to plan a
route with up to eight different stopovers. Recreational sailors are
allowed free access from 19.00 to 24.00 GMT daily.

This is the Great Circle Line’s marine distance calculator. A trial
version can be downloaded, but there is no free access area for
yachtsmen.

More of an intellectual pastime than a practical navigation tool,
the various scripts on this page provide Great Circle Distance
and bearing calculators based on the Haversine formula for the
shortest distances between two points on the earth’s surface.

route. Clearly, this tool does not apply to short routes.
