Impact of the War : 5 areas Emancipation of the Slaves The main evidence in support of the war being revolutionary is that it resulted in the emancipation of 4 million slaves. It is difficult to see how this would have occurred without the Civil War. Southern slaveholders had billions of dollars invested in slavery. While the emancipation of the slaves affected 4 million ex-slaves and 350,000 slave holders it had little impact on most Americans. Arguably no great race revolution occurred. Blacks remained the poorest ethnic group in the USA and by the start of the c20th had lost most of their Civil and Political rights. National Survival Arguably  the main result of the Civil War was that it ensured that the Union survived as a single nation. Did this create the modern United States? No American, since 1865, has doubted where sovereignty lies. Although many Southerners retuned to the fold after 1865, many think of themselves first and foremost as Southerners. The Balance of Government Arguably the Civil War effectively changed the whole emphasis of the Constitution – resulting in power for the President rather than individual states.  ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Political & Social effects The main effect was to limit the power grip of Southern states on the offices of government (House, Senate, President, Supreme Court) Also saw the dominance of the Republican Party of the Democrats Social effects = limited Loss of 620,00 young men was negated by increased immigration Opportunities for women were quickly closed again

W.I.L.F. 1. You have 45 mins to complete the essay – in silence 2. You must use  5 paragraphs – introduction, main-body [Causes, Events & Consequences] and a conclusion 3. It must be written in your red book 4. Try to return to the question at the end of each paragraph – to see whether what you have written answers it 5. Answer the question in the first sentence - and stick to that! 6. You only have your A3 grid for help - no books, folders etc Best of British, er I mean American luck!  
Introduction Discuss – means that you have to say whether you  AGREE or DISAGREE with the title – do this first as your very first sentence. You then need to ‘signpost’ where you are going with your essay. Don’t waffle, or go off the point! Something like.... I disagree with the quotation. However ,the American and English Civil Wars are similar in some respects for instance they both resulted in significant changes in the government of both countries. Although there are obvious differences too. One such is the timescale between the two conflicts – they are two hundred[200] years apart. I will discuss the following factors in comparing the two Civil Wars. These include – causes of the Wars, Leadership, Military battles, Technology, and the effects. Furthermore, I will analyse how both Civil Wars shape the societies of both countries even today.
Essay Plan Paragraph 1  Introduction English and American Civil War – dates,  key figures, anything important you  want to say here. Paragraph 2 Causes – both English and American. RTTQ Paragraph 3 The Events: The Wars – leadership, famous battles, death tolls, technology. RTTQ Paragraph 4 Consequences – both English and  American  RTTQ Paragraph 5 Conclusion – including legacy – how  does it affect the world we live in today –  both in America and Britain REMEMBER – be succinct – and explicit, use connectives! RTTQ, and ATFQ too!

It must be written in your red book 4. Try to return to the question at the end of each paragraph – to see whether what you have written answers it 5. Answer the question in the first sentence - and stick to that! 6. You only have your A3 grid for help - no books, folders etc Best of British, er I mean American luck! 

You then need to ‘signpost’ where you are going with your essay. Don’t waffle, or go off the point! Something like.... I disagree with the quotation. However ,the American and English Civil Wars are similar in some respects for instance they both resulted in significant changes in the government of both countries. Although there are obvious differences too. One such is the timescale between the two conflicts – they are two hundred[200] years apart. I will discuss the following factors in comparing the two Civil Wars. These include – causes of the Wars, Leadership, Military battles, Technology, and the effects. Furthermore, I will analyse how both Civil Wars shape the societies of both countries even today.

RTTQ, and ATFQ too!
