BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HANOI
NEWSLETTER
2. From Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi
It is hard to believe that June is upon us
and we are into the final month of the
2014/15 academic year. However, we
still have a number of exciting weeks
left of this term with a great deal of
work and activities to pursue. There are
still final assessments taking place in
Primary and an analysis of exam results in Secondary.
Reports are being prepared for issue and the final Parent
Teacher Meetings are also ahead. Next week marks
another special focus for our school as it is ‘Green Week’.
Understanding and looking after our environment is a key
aspect of school life. Indeed, we are extremely lucky that
our school is set in such a ‘green’ site. As I look out
through my office window, I am fortunate to be able to see
large numbers of beautiful trees, flowers and vegetation
situated in wide open spaces for our school community to
enjoy. BIS Hanoi is a wonderful campus in an impressive
setting where we can all start understanding the wider
aspects of environmental issues and how our lives and
actions can influence our future.
Looking forward a little to next year, it is encouraging to
know that BIS Hanoi is becoming very popular amongst
parents in Hanoi and beyond. We are receiving large
numbers of enquiries with regard to enrollment for next
year and some Year Groups are close to being full already.
I know that our current parents help a lot with promoting
the school by speaking to friends and colleagues about the
positive nature of our school and I am extremely grateful
for this.
I do wish you all a most pleasant weekend.

3. In amongst all the A Level examinations
in the last four weeks, Year 12 found the
time to complete their first IELTS
practice test. IELTS (like SATs) aren’t
strictly a requirement for university
entrance but many institutions like them
as they have a consistent standard they
understand as they assess the many applications received
from high quality students across the world. Given the
high percentage of A* and A grades these students
received last year, you won’t be surprised to hear that our
students did very well and we look forward to receiving
their formal results before their university applications
next term.

week. It was a privilege to show them the great learning
and teaching taking place in the secondary. They were
very excited by what they saw in the Secondary section.
We have three weeks of term left which will go very
quickly. Years 7 – 10 will be getting valuable feedback
from their examinations and there are a number of
activities planned to support learning including Sprint
Maths and the XY Factor.
Year 10 completed their Morrisby tests this week and will
receive feedback early next term. This is a very exciting
time for them as they start to think ahead to their courses
after IGCSE and the subjects they will take.
4. You will all be familiar with the idea
that at BIS Hanoi we aim to educate the
whole child. That includes not just
academic learning but also an emphasis
on developing our children into citizens
of the world of the future. We talk a lot
with children about the values and
attitudes highlighted on our Aide Memoire – integrity,
respect, caring, enquiry, reflection and perseverance. We
use lesson time as well as assemblies to promote these
ideas and reward children who demonstrate them with our
‘Golden Ribbons’.
However, we also go beyond this and aim to educate our
children about healthy living. We take children’s health
and safety very seriously. Since the school started we have
encouraged every child to be in the habit of bringing a
re-usable water bottle to school with them every day.
Children are encouraged to drink water regularly and keep
their bottles near them throughout the day. We pay
attention to the meals that we provide to ensure children
are given a healthy, balanced diet. We use our ‘Fine
Dining’ scheme as a way of highlighting and encouraging
healthy eating, by providing a reward on Friday lunchtime
to children who have shown they are careful in their

choice of what they eat. Early on in the development of
the school we invested in providing shaded play areas for
children. We have long had a policy of ‘No hat, no play’,
and in the warmer months we allow children the option of
remaining indoors to socialize with their friends. Over the
last two weeks, when the weather has been unseasonably
hot in Hanoi, we have kept all children inside during
playtimes and have brought outdoor ECAs inside.
In the final week of this term we will have a special focus
week - ‘Stay safe, keep healthy’ - to prepare children for
the long summer holiday ahead. We really do take the
health and welfare of our children very seriously.
5. BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL - HANOI
This term Year 1 has been learning about ‘Buildings and Structures’. As part of this topic
1B has been on several trips around Hanoi to visit different buildings. They looked at a
house in our local area, took a lift to the top of the Lotte building, explored a traditional
house in the old quarter of Hanoi and finally they visited the Hanoi Flag tower. All these
trips helped the children develop their knowledge and understanding across all areas of the
curriculum.
Children in Year 1 were able to make comparisons between old and new buildings which
helped to develop their understanding of history. In science they investigated the types of materials used and
thought carefully about why different materials were chosen. They also compared different types of houses
around the world in geography. Looking at the structure of the different buildings also helped to develop their
mathematical understanding of shape and space. In literacy children used adjectives to describe the building
as well as using time connectives to sequence their recount writing. In art they used a range of different
techniques including building 3D models, sketching and the use of rulers for more technical drawing.
Learning certainly is fun in Year 1!
