Turkish theater can be divided into traditional and modern forms. Traditional theater includes puppet plays, Karagöz-Hacivat shadow plays, outdoor plays, and single performer comedy. Modern Turkish theater consists of tragedy, aiming to purify audiences; comedy, intended to teach through humor; and drama, which breaks tragedy's strict rules. Important Turkish artists who helped develop the modern theater include Adile Naşit, Kemal Sunal, and Müjdat Gezen. Today, state, city, and private theaters in Turkey continue holding regular performances.
