WORKSHEET: REFLECTING & DISCOVERING A NARRATIVE

DIRECTIONS: The purpose of this worksheet is to help you remember personal and family
history in order to discover the stories that make us who we are. Use the questions below as a
starting point. If you aren’t interested in the question, don’t feel comfortable with it, or can’t
think of an answer, just skip the it and go on to the next one. Additionally - if other memories /
ideas come up, write down those memories / ideas - even if that’s not what the question is
asking!


1.   What is your earliest memory?




2.   Where did you grow up? When and how did your family come to live in Maryland?




3.   Tell about a family story that you remember:




4.   Tell about someone who has been important to you in your life, who has made a big
     impression on you. What can you remember about them?




5.   Make the longest list you can of jobs that your parents have ever done:




6.   Make the longest list you can of jobs that your grandparents have ever done:
7.   Describe a family meal from when you were younger. How often did you have this type of
     meal? Who was there? What did you eat? Did you have favorite foods or foods you really
     disliked? What do you remember about the plates, cups, glasses, or tableware? Were there
     “table rules”?




8.   Can you remember a “favorite outfit” from when you were younger? What did you like
     about it? When did you get to wear it?




9.   Tell about a memorable family vacation. What made it memorable? What sights, smells, or
     sounds do you remember?




10. What pets have you had?




11. How did your parents meet?




12. How did your grandparents meet?




13. Who was your first “best friend”? How did you meet?
14. What is a story that you have heard about a parent or relative when they were young?




15. Did a parent or relative ever get in trouble when they were young?




16. Did your family ever own or live on a farm? A store or other place of business?




17. Tell about a time when you were afraid of something:




18. Tell about a memorable moment in elementary or middle school. What made it
    memorable? What sights, smells, or sounds do you remember?




19. Has anyone in your family ever served in the military? Have they ever shared any stories
    about that experience?




20. What traditions have been passed down in your family?
