WHY E-LEARNING?
Many organizations and institutions are using e-learning because it can be as effective as
traditional training at a lower cost.
E-learning reaches a wider target audience by engaging learners who are:
• geographically dispersed with limited time and/or resources to travel;
• busy with work or family commitments which do not allow them to attend courses on
specific dates with a fixed schedule;
• limited from participating in classroom sessions
• facing difficulties with real-time communication (e.g. foreign language learners or very
shy learners).
• highly interested to learn at their own pace
E-learning can offer effective instructional methods linking collaboration activities with self-
paced study, personalizing learning pathways based on learners’ needs.

What is Rai University Online Learning (UOL)?
Rai University is one of the best online universities in India, which aim to provide higher studies
through their accredited degree, diploma and certificate programs. With us, a student can learn at
his own pace and achieve his career goals online. A significant benefit to taking classes online is
that students can keep working full-time while studying to earn a degree in the field they truly
desire. Not to forget, employers respect the valuable education provided by an online degree.
It is a flexible, fun and interactive method of learning which allows a student to take subjects of
their choice along with having the main subjects. Earn credit points after clearing the exam.

A feel of Rai University:
E-learning Approaches
There are two general approaches to e-learning:
a) Self-paced learners are completely independent. Learners are free to learn at their own
pace based on their individual needs and interests.
b) Facilitated/instructor-led e-learning courses -provide different levels of support from
tutors and instructors and collaboration among learners.
: 4 :-
STUDENT HANDBOOK
Self-paced e-learning
At RU, we motivate students to learn at their own ease and comfort. The learners are offered e-
learning courseware’s which are complemented by supplemental resources.
We deliver e-learning content using different media elements, such as text, graphics, audio and
video. We provide as much learning support as possible in order to make learners self-sufficient.
However, some kind of support, such as e-mail-based technical support, peer to peer learning
discussion forums is normally offered to learners.
Instructor-led-learning
In this model, a curriculum is developed that integrates several contents like courseware or
syllabus. The course is scheduled and led by an instructor and/or facilitator through an online
learning platform.
In this method content for individual study can be integrated with instructor’s lectures, individual
assignments and collaborative activities among learners. Learners, facilitators and instructors can
use communication tools such as e‑mails, discussion forums, chats, polls, whiteboards, and
application sharing and audio and video conferencing to communicate and work together.
At the end, a test/exam/ exercise or assessment is required to measure learning.
RU e-Learning components
We combine different types of e-learning components, including:
a) e-learning content;
b) e-mentoring;
c) collaborative learning through peer-to-peer discussion forums; and
Blended learning in UOL
The term “blended” means that traditional instructor-led training is being supplemented with
electronic formats. Blended learning combines different training media (e.g. technologies,
activities and events).

• Psychomotor skills involving the acquisition of physical perceptions and movements
(e.g. making sports or driving a car).

ACADEMIC SYSTEM
Rai University offers multi-disciplinary global education at postgraduate and undergraduate
levels. It is our belief that sound higher education requires a study of diverse subjects, which
satisfies personal career, desires, development of broad foundation for subsequent learning and
adaptation to new societal needs and maintains flexibility for moving into new areas of interest.
The academic programs at Rai University have accordingly been designed to help students
develop the knowledge and capabilities needed to meet the challenges of today’s society. They
are armed with fundamental principles, habit of self-learning and the power that comes from
thorough and systematic learning process.
In keeping with the needs of multi-skilling and broad based knowledge along with the
development of core competence, we at Rai University have adopted an academic system, which
not only meets global standards, but is committed to prepare global citizens.
Program Levels
The university offers various courses under the following levels:
a) Under Graduate Degree (Eligibility: 10+2)
b) Post Graduate Degree (Eligibility: Graduation)
c) Diploma (Eligibility: 10+2)
d) PG Diploma (Eligibility: Graduation)
e) Certificate(Eligibility: 10+2)
f) PG Certificate (Eligibility: Graduation)
Credit System
Each subject is assigned 6 (six) credits. As per international standards, the student can take any
number of credits in a year in order to increase the pace of achieving the degree.
Academic Flexibility through Flexible Credit System (FCS)
Students today like to make their own decisions and like to plan their future by themselves.
Employers expect students to have multi-disciplinary competency, leadership skills and be ICT
ready. But student aspirations and demands of the workplace have become highly varied. The
present rigid system of learning offers very little flexibility to students in choosing the courses of
their liking and helps little in becoming a well-versed person.
: 7 :-
STUDENT HANDBOOK
As part of continuous improvement in providing quality education, Rai University is taking the
next step in this direction by introducing the Flexible Credit System (FCS) into its academic
curriculum.
By this, students can study courses according to their interests and academic ability in completing
them.
Benefits of Flexible Credit System (FCS)
• It allows students to decide their academic plans and permits them to modify it as they
progress in time.
• Under FCS, each Programme will have baskets of courses classified under Honours,
Elective and General Category.
• At the end of the Programme, each student is expected to have the credit distribution in
various categories as per our academic scheme which is given below.
• Ample options are offered to a student to choose interdisciplinary courses which will help
him to develop additional knowledge.
• University General courses are definitely an attraction to students to extend their
knowledge beyond their specialization.
• Now, if a student of B.A Political Science is ambitious enough to also study a subject in
Information Technology or Operations Management in order to enhance his skills and
employability, he will be given the opportunity to take up these courses and earn extra
credits.
• The FCS is an attempt to introduce a student-friendly higher education system which
gives the students the added advantage of migrating to various universities in the middle
of their programme, through transfer of credits.
Program Structure
• Fixed Subject Module: Student taking admission under this category will study a
determined set of subjects and credits as prescribed by the University.
• Flexible Subject Module: Students taking admission under this category can select a
certain number of general subjects and credits based on his/her choice, in addition to the
mandatory set of specialization subjects required for the chosen program.
Under Flexible Subject Module, the subjects have been grouped under ‘Honours Subjects’,
‘Elective Subjects’ and ‘General Subjects’
The definition of these terms is as follows:
Honours Subjects Elective Subjects General Subjects
These are compulsory subjects
pertaining to the core area of interest of
any student. A student has to study
these subjects to qualify for a degree.
These are subjects pertaining to
specialized area of interest of any
student.
These are subjects pertaining to a
varied range of disciplines which also
includes skills based subjects beyond
the specialized area of interest of any
student. Students have the liberty to
choose subjects from the general
stream as per the credit requirement of
their program.

Skill - Based Degree Courses
Skills-based education is becoming more important today, with many employers expecting new
employees to have all the practical skills they need to start work. The primary objective for
introducing these courses are to provide knowledge and skills on certain specific areas, where a
student can find their suitable professions in both employment or entrepreneurship sectors after
being graduated. Skills based learning provides environment where independence, thinking skills
and active learning are developed at the same time as knowledge is acquired.
While the goal of skill-based courses is to ensure that more students learn what they are expected
to learn, the approach can also provide educators with more detailed or fine-grained information
about student learning progress, which can help them more precisely identify academic strengths
and weakness, as well as the specific concepts and skills students have not yet mastered.
An organization looks for reliable person with the right attitude to work, if this is combined with
an ability to pick up new skills quickly, he is the dream employee for a company. This is a big
opportunity for students who wish to supplement their theoretical knowledge with practical
hands-on training that will improve their employability in the increasingly competitive job market
in the country.
These courses recognize the value of experiential learning, in which students can develop and
hone skill sets in real-world contexts. The logic of skill-based credit is compelling. After all,
colleges and universities hire most people to teach so that students learn. If students can
achieve the desired learning in other ways, then why not provide them with the same credential as
those who sat in the traditional classrooms with the traditional faculty members.
Our courses are focused around a set of learning objectives which identify what students should
be able to do by the time they have completed a course module. The courses are aimed towards
developing students’ mastery with these skills. The university award credits based on whether
students can prove they have mastered competencies—the skills, abilities, and knowledge
required in an area of study.
Skills -based education puts you in charge of your education as never before. No longer are you
confined to a rigid set of courses and semester schedules. Instead of working at an instructor’s
pace, studying material you may already know, skill-based education makes it possible for you to
work at your pace, studying only the things you need to learn. If you are the right kind of
student—self-directed, and self-motivated to succeed—then skills-based programs such as the
Flexible Option may be just what you’ve been waiting for. Students may pursue these unique

degrees to help them compete with others who already have degrees but lack practical job
experience.
Let us have a look at an example:
If a student enrols for a B.A Geography program, he/she has to earn 144 credits which means he
has to earn 60 credits by taking 10 subjects from Honours, 36 credits by taking 6 subjects from
Arts and Humanities Elective and the remaining 48 credits by taking 8 subjects which can be
earned by choosing subjects from under graduate general subjects list inclusive of skill based
subjects.

EVALUATION
Evaluation at Rai University follows an authentic process to evaluate the performance of our
online students. We appreciate the sincerity and efforts undertaken by our online students and
thus ensure a reliable technique of assessment.
Evaluation Assessment Protocol
Formative Assessment: We have designed excellent methods to evaluate academic progress of
students during a unit, course or lesson. It will help students to develop analytical and critical
thinking skills of a life-long learner such as goal-setting, self-assessment and self-evaluation.
Summative Assessment: We have framed this technique to evaluate student learning, skill
acquisition and academic achievement at the end of a unit, course, project, semester, program or
school year or at the conclusion of a defined instructional period through questionnaires, surveys
and projects. Students’ progress can be measured collectively and enables to work towards
improvement in a more planned and systematic way.
Formative Assessment
Written Reflections: “Minute papers” or “Muddiest Points” are designed to capture students
learning immediately after the session. This will help students to attain deeper understanding of a
subject/topic and get information about the most confusing topic, important unanswered
questions and the most confusing topic.
Polls/Surveys: We use Polls/Surveys as an intelligent means of analyzing students’
understanding and give students flexibility to give credits over courseware, subjects, video
lectures and presentations which gives further scope for improvement in entire teaching-learning
process. Collecting opinions and responses helps to judge prior knowledge and level of
understanding of the students.
Quizzes: This is an objective method of teaching by pausing after every few minutes by
embedding quiz questions in online lessons to monitor student learning more systematically and
make session a more healthy learning experience. We have embedded subject-related, short-term
GK, current affairs quiz in the online lessons. Through this mode of evaluation learning becomes
fun and promotes interactive learning.
: 54 :-
STUDENT HANDBOOK
Wrappers: We have designed wrappers to assess performance based on assignments and
projects submitted online by students’. This provides students an opportunity to develop self-
discipline, plan for future exams strategically and enhance time-management skills.
Summative Assessment
Exams: We have designed online exams as a means of evaluation to promote competence-based
learning. Mid-term exams, final exams and tests are conducted at the end of the course units. It
gives flexibility to schedule your exams anytime, anywhere and is extremely advantageous for
students residing in remote areas.
Team-Assessment and Peer-Assessment: By submitting online projects on the subject in form
of presentations, reports enhance learning experience and gives autonomy to provide feedback
on each other’s work.
Portfolios: Submitting portfolios online makes learning more organized and systematic. This is
a powerful way to get reflection of students’ progress. This enables the students to organize their
learning, makes them independent, reduce administrative work, and enhance time management
and learning skills.
Strategies framed to curb online examination malpractices
To ensure smooth management and integrity of online exams, we have methods to ensure
conducting online exams in a more secured pattern.
 The web cam monitoring ensures a systematic approach to maintain the student integrity
throughout the examination.
 Eye-movement are continuously captured through live camera plug so, avoid looking at
smart phones. In this case exam will get discontinued.
 To accurately confirm identity of a test taker patterns of keyboard pressure are
analyzed. If found using irrelevant or inappropriate keys such as ctrl+C or ctrl+V, a pop-
up will be flashed and exams will get disabled. Students will have to start afresh.
 Browser lock downs -a student can only see the screens necessary for completing the
test. The system enable the students to see only the assessment screens and prevent them
from screen-sharing, messaging and switching to other applications.

  • 3. STUDENT HANDBOOK WHY E-LEARNING? Many organizations and institutions are using e-learning because it can be as effective as traditional training at a lower cost. E-learning reaches a wider target audience by engaging learners who are: • geographically dispersed with limited time and/or resources to travel; • busy with work or family commitments which do not allow them to attend courses on specific dates with a fixed schedule; • limited from participating in classroom sessions • facing difficulties with real-time communication (e.g. foreign language learners or very shy learners). • highly interested to learn at their own pace E-learning can offer effective instructional methods linking collaboration activities with self- paced study, personalizing learning pathways based on learners’ needs. : 2 :-
  • 4. STUDENT HANDBOOK What is Rai University Online Learning (UOL)? Rai University is one of the best online universities in India, which aim to provide higher studies through their accredited degree, diploma and certificate programs. With us, a student can learn at his own pace and achieve his career goals online. A significant benefit to taking classes online is that students can keep working full-time while studying to earn a degree in the field they truly desire. Not to forget, employers respect the valuable education provided by an online degree. It is a flexible, fun and interactive method of learning which allows a student to take subjects of their choice along with having the main subjects. • 5. STUDENT HANDBOOK A feel of Rai University: E-learning Approaches There are two general approaches to e-learning: a) Self-paced learners are completely independent. Learners are free to learn at their own pace based on their individual needs and interests. b) Facilitated/instructor-led e-learning courses -provide different levels of support from tutors and instructors and collaboration among learners. : 4 :-
  • 6. STUDENT HANDBOOK Self-paced e-learning At RU, we motivate students to learn at their own ease and comfort. The learners are offered e- learning courseware’s which are complemented by supplemental resources. We deliver e-learning content using different media elements, such as text, graphics, audio and video. We provide as much learning support as possible in order to make learners self-sufficient. However, some kind of support, such as e-mail-based technical support, peer to peer learning discussion forums is normally offered to learners. Instructor-led-learning In this model, a curriculum is developed that integrates several contents like courseware or syllabus. The course is scheduled and led by an instructor and/or facilitator through an online learning platform. In this method content for individual study can be integrated with instructor’s lectures, individual assignments and collaborative activities among learners. Learners, facilitators and instructors can use communication tools such as e‑mails, discussion forums, chats, polls, whiteboards, and application sharing and audio and video conferencing to communicate and work together. At the end, a test/exam/ exercise or assessment is required to measure learning. RU e-Learning components We combine different types of e-learning components, including: a) e-learning content; b) e-mentoring; c) collaborative learning through peer-to-peer discussion forums; and Blended learning in UOL The term “blended” means that traditional instructor-led training is being supplemented with electronic formats. Blended learning combines different training media (e.g. technologies, activities and events). : 5 :-

  • 8. STUDENT HANDBOOK ACADEMIC SYSTEM Rai University offers multi-disciplinary global education at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. It is our belief that sound higher education requires a study of diverse subjects, which satisfies personal career, desires, development of broad foundation for subsequent learning and adaptation to new societal needs and maintains flexibility for moving into new areas of interest. The academic programs at Rai University have accordingly been designed to help students develop the knowledge and capabilities needed to meet the challenges of today’s society. They are armed with fundamental principles, habit of self-learning and the power that comes from thorough and systematic learning process. In keeping with the needs of multi-skilling and broad based knowledge along with the development of core competence, we at Rai University have adopted an academic system, which not only meets global standards, but is committed to prepare global citizens. Program Levels The university offers various courses under the following levels: a) Under Graduate Degree (Eligibility: 10+2) b) Post Graduate Degree (Eligibility: Graduation) c) Diploma (Eligibility: 10+2) d) PG Diploma (Eligibility: Graduation) e) Certificate(Eligibility: 10+2) f) PG Certificate (Eligibility: Graduation) Credit System Each subject is assigned 6 (six) credits. As per international standards, the student can take any number of credits in a year in order to increase the pace of achieving the degree. Academic Flexibility through Flexible Credit System (FCS) Students today like to make their own decisions and like to plan their future by themselves. Employers expect students to have multi-disciplinary competency, leadership skills and be ICT ready. But student aspirations and demands of the workplace have become highly varied. The present rigid system of learning offers very little flexibility to students in choosing the courses of their liking and helps little in becoming a well-versed person. : 7 :-
  • 9. STUDENT HANDBOOK As part of continuous improvement in providing quality education, Rai University is taking the next step in this direction by introducing the Flexible Credit System (FCS) into its academic curriculum. By this, students can study courses according to their interests and academic ability in completing them. Benefits of Flexible Credit System (FCS) • It allows students to decide their academic plans and permits them to modify it as they progress in time. • Under FCS, each Programme will have baskets of courses classified under Honours, Elective and General Category. • At the end of the Programme, each student is expected to have the credit distribution in various categories as per our academic scheme which is given below. • Ample options are offered to a student to choose interdisciplinary courses which will help him to develop additional knowledge. • University General courses are definitely an attraction to students to extend their knowledge beyond their specialization. • Now, if a student of B.A Political Science is ambitious enough to also study a subject in Information Technology or Operations Management in order to enhance his skills and employability, he will be given the opportunity to take up these courses and earn extra credits. • The FCS is an attempt to introduce a student-friendly higher education system which gives the students the added advantage of migrating to various universities in the middle of their programme, through transfer of credits. Program Structure • Fixed Subject Module: Student taking admission under this category will study a determined set of subjects and credits as prescribed by the University. • Flexible Subject Module: Students taking admission under this category can select a certain number of general subjects and credits based on his/her choice, in addition to the mandatory set of specialization subjects required for the chosen program. Under Flexible Subject Module, the subjects have been grouped under ‘Honours Subjects’, ‘Elective Subjects’ and ‘General Subjects’ The definition of these terms is as follows: Honours Subjects Elective Subjects General Subjects These are compulsory subjects pertaining to the core area of interest of any student. A student has to study these subjects to qualify for a degree. These are subjects pertaining to specialized area of interest of any student. These are subjects pertaining to a varied range of disciplines which also includes skills based subjects beyond the specialized area of interest of any student. Students have the liberty to choose subjects from the general stream as per the credit requirement of their program. : 8 :-

  • 13. STUDENT HANDBOOK Skill - Based Degree Courses Skills-based education is becoming more important today, with many employers expecting new employees to have all the practical skills they need to start work. The primary objective for introducing these courses are to provide knowledge and skills on certain specific areas, where a student can find their suitable professions in both employment or entrepreneurship sectors after being graduated. Skills based learning provides environment where independence, thinking skills and active learning are developed at the same time as knowledge is acquired. While the goal of skill-based courses is to ensure that more students learn what they are expected to learn, the approach can also provide educators with more detailed or fine-grained information about student learning progress, which can help them more precisely identify academic strengths and weakness, as well as the specific concepts and skills students have not yet mastered. An organization looks for reliable person with the right attitude to work, if this is combined with an ability to pick up new skills quickly, he is the dream employee for a company. This is a big opportunity for students who wish to supplement their theoretical knowledge with practical hands-on training that will improve their employability in the increasingly competitive job market in the country. These courses recognize the value of experiential learning, in which students can develop and hone skill sets in real-world contexts. The logic of skill-based credit is compelling. After all, colleges and universities hire most people to teach so that students learn. If students can achieve the desired learning in other ways, then why not provide them with the same credential as those who sat in the traditional classrooms with the traditional faculty members. Our courses are focused around a set of learning objectives which identify what students should be able to do by the time they have completed a course module. The courses are aimed towards developing students’ mastery with these skills. The university award credits based on whether students can prove they have mastered competencies—the skills, abilities, and knowledge required in an area of study. Skills -based education puts you in charge of your education as never before. No longer are you confined to a rigid set of courses and semester schedules. Instead of working at an instructor’s pace, studying material you may already know, skill-based education makes it possible for you to work at your pace, studying only the things you need to learn. If you are the right kind of student—self-directed, and self-motivated to succeed—then skills-based programs such as the Flexible Option may be just what you’ve been waiting for. Students may pursue these unique : 12 :-

We appreciate the sincerity and efforts undertaken by our online students and thus ensure a reliable technique of assessment. Evaluation Assessment Protocol Formative Assessment: We have designed excellent methods to evaluate academic progress of students during a unit, course or lesson. It will help students to develop analytical and critical thinking skills of a life-long learner such as goal-setting, self-assessment and self-evaluation. Summative Assessment: We have framed this technique to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition and academic achievement at the end of a unit, course, project, semester, program or school year or at the conclusion of a defined instructional period through questionnaires, surveys and projects. Students’ progress can be measured collectively and enables to work towards improvement in a more planned and systematic way. Formative Assessment Written Reflections: “Minute papers” or “Muddiest Points” are designed to capture students learning immediately after the session. This will help students to attain deeper understanding of a subject/topic and get information about the most confusing topic, important unanswered questions and the most confusing topic. Polls/Surveys: We use Polls/Surveys as an intelligent means of analyzing students’ understanding and give students flexibility to give credits over courseware, subjects, video lectures and presentations which gives further scope for improvement in entire teaching-learning process. Collecting opinions and responses helps to judge prior knowledge and level of understanding of the students. Quizzes: This is an objective method of teaching by pausing after every few minutes by embedding quiz questions in online lessons to monitor student learning more systematically and make session a more healthy learning experience. We have embedded subject-related, short-term GK, current affairs quiz in the online lessons. Through this mode of evaluation learning becomes fun and promotes interactive learning. : 54 :-
  • 56. STUDENT HANDBOOK Wrappers: We have designed wrappers to assess performance based on assignments and projects submitted online by students’. This provides students an opportunity to develop self- discipline, plan for future exams strategically and enhance time-management skills. Summative Assessment Exams: We have designed online exams as a means of evaluation to promote competence-based learning. Mid-term exams, final exams and tests are conducted at the end of the course units. It gives flexibility to schedule your exams anytime, anywhere and is extremely advantageous for students residing in remote areas. Team-Assessment and Peer-Assessment: By submitting online projects on the subject in form of presentations, reports enhance learning experience and gives autonomy to provide feedback on each other’s work. Portfolios: Submitting portfolios online makes learning more organized and systematic. This is a powerful way to get reflection of students’ progress. This enables the students to organize their learning, makes them independent, reduce administrative work, and enhance time management and learning skills. Strategies framed to curb online examination malpractices To ensure smooth management and integrity of online exams, we have methods to ensure conducting online exams in a more secured pattern.  The web cam monitoring ensures a systematic approach to maintain the student integrity throughout the examination.  Eye-movement are continuously captured through live camera plug so, avoid looking at smart phones. In this case exam will get discontinued.  To accurately confirm identity of a test taker patterns of keyboard pressure are analyzed. If found using irrelevant or inappropriate keys such as ctrl+C or ctrl+V, a pop- up will be flashed and exams will get disabled. Students will have to start afresh.  Browser lock downs -a student can only see the screens necessary for completing the test.
