As the ability to measure improves, researchers and scientists learn more about nature and the universe. This spurs the development of new technologies and, as a result, more opportunities for measurement. Agilent has contributed to the test and measurement field for more than 70 years.
Agilent Technologies is the world’s premier measurement company. Our singular focus on measurement helps scientists and engineers address their toughest challenges with precision and confidence. Electronic measurement has been the core of Agilent—and its predecessor, Hewlett-Packard—since each company was formed. Our first product, the audio oscillator, was introduced in 1939. Since then we have given customers the tools to deliver electronic products in automotive, aerospace, communications and consumer products. Agilent entered the chemical analysis arena in 1965 and has remained an industry leader ever since. Agilent’s primary research and development and manufacturing sites are in California, Colorado and Delaware in the U.S., and in Australia, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the United Kingdom. We sell our products primarily through direct sales, but we also use distributors, resellers, manufacturer’s representatives, telesales and electronic commerce.
Agilent is No. 1 in overall electronic measurement. Markets:Our Electronic Measurement Group is No. 1 in each of its three markets: aerospace/defense; industrial, computer and semiconductor; and communications. More than half of the world’s cell phones made and sold each year are designed and tested with Agilent products. Our instruments help wireless equipment manufacturers improve the overall quality of the user experience. In aerospace and defense, our products design and test sophisticated avionics, radar, communication systems, satellite, surveillance and GPS. Customers use our electronic measurement solutions at every stage as they design and manufacture computers and semiconductors. Technology:Our electronic-measurement business offers industry-leading solutions in every one of its core technology platforms. The quality of our core products is the best in the industry. Our instruments have the lowest failure rate, which means our electronic design and manufacturing customers have more uptime when they test their designs and products. Recent product introductions include the world’s highest-bandwidth real-time oscilloscopes to complement our best-in-class spectrum and network analyzers. In 2010 we entered the modular-instrument market by announcing 47 products in one day – the largest modular-instrument introduction in the history of electronic measurement. We offer customers choices of test solutions with box, handheld and modular instruments.
Agilent is the worldwide leader in chemical analysis. We hold the No. 1 position in each of our core markets. Markets:Agilent GCs are used for research and quality control in the chemical, oil and gas, and food industries as well for environmental monitoring. Our leading vacuum technology is used to drive sensitivity and performance of our mass spectrometry detectors. Our atomic and molecular spectroscopy tools are used for research and quality-control testing of environmental samples, fuel, food ingredients and pharmaceuticals, as well as for forensic sample analysis. Chemistries for chromatography and sample preparation make it possible to improve the performance of our GC and LC systems. Our customers analyze a wide variety of components from many different types of samples (food, pharmaceutical, industrial material, fuel, biological, environmental and forensic). Technology :Agilent provides the broadest selection of gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry systems, support, and supplies in the industry. We invented fused-silica capillary GC columns; introduced the world’s first benchtop GC/MS and ICP-MS systems; and revolutionized the gas chromatography market with the world’s most popular GC.
The life sciences market, at $20 billion, represents Agilent’s biggest measurement growth opportunity. It is an unstoppable market, because health is everyone’s concern. Markets:Agilent offers products across the entire pharmaceutical value chain, from basic research to drug manufacturing. Our tools are used to research the genetic, proteomic and metabolomic causes of cancer, heart disease, autism and muscular dystrophy. Technology:Our core technology platforms in life sciences include liquid chromatography, LC/mass spectrometry and microarrays. We recently introduced: the world’s highest-pressure HPLC the most sensitive LC-MS triple quadrupole the most discriminating genomic target-enrichment system the largest human magnetic resonance imager.
Agilent is one of just a few high-tech companies to maintain centralized, internal research capabilities. The Agilent Research Laboratories are positioned to invest in high impact, and often higher risk, longer-term research investments. With their centralized function and breadth of technology capability, the Labs leverage technology synergies and enable new measurement techniques across life sciences, chemical analysis and electronics. When we combine different technologies to form something entirely new, powerful innovations result. Some examples: Agilent’s expertise in DNA biochemistry, image analysis and inkjet printing (from HP) was key to the development of DNA microarrays. Agilent in 2008 created an entirely new measurement platform – scanning microwave microscopy – by combining three core capabilities from our electronic and bioanalytical businesses.We apply advanced data converter technology and digital signal processing techniques, originally developed for oscilloscopes and communications, to time-of-flight mass spectrometry to significantly increase system performance for chemical and bioanalysis.
Societal megatrends are emerging that present new measurement challenges – and new opportunities for Agilent. Here are four examples, including their implications for Agilent: Rise of Asia/developing nations: The consequences of industrialization – health, waste, pollution – will need to be addressed. Agilent has a strong footprint in Asia, and we are the largest measurement company in China. We make specific solutions for Asian markets. We conduct local training programs for food, water and environmental safety. Need for safe food: A global food supply means we have less control over its quality. Agilent solutions are used throughout the food production chain. We have made a strategic investment to improve food safety and quality around the world. Aging population: Health costs continue to skyrocket. People want to live healthy, productive lives. Agilent solutions are used throughout the pharma value chain. We have made a strategic investment to further and enable life sciences research. Increasingly sophisticated electronics: Networks and infrastructure require increasing quality and higher throughput – and they must be kept secure. We have invested in the next-generation communications technologies to help wireless communications customers transition from 3G to 4G. Our customers’ transition will require capital equipment, and we will be there to help them deliver faster and more sophisticated wireless products and devices to their demanding customers.
Agilent has been the leader in measurement for more than 70 years. We offer the leading technology platform in every one of our major markets. In fiscal 2011 we are investing 10 percent of revenue in R&D to maintain that leadership. Our ability to scale and leverage our worldwide manufacturing capability has made us a leader in expertise and efficiency.
