Brother Roger founded the Taizé Community in 1940 in France to provide shelter and assistance to refugees, including Jews, fleeing World War 2. Over time, the community grew from just Brother Roger to over 100 brothers from various Christian denominations from over 25 countries. Brother Roger established practices like solitary prayer to avoid putting pressure on refugees of different faiths. He was killed during evening prayer in 2005 at the age of 90, and Brother Alois now leads the community as prior.
