Coffee industry
Statistics show that more than fifty percent of people who consume instant coffee do
not know how it is produced. Yet, the process, which comprises multiple carefully engineered
steps, significantly affects the taste, aroma and health benefits of a cup of instant coffee.
Different coffee producers may adopt different methods to produce different grades of coffee
but regardless the variations in these processes, a typical process will include the following
essential steps:
It all begins with the picking of ripe coffee beans by laborers in the coffee plantations.
Laborers have to harvest as many beans in the shortest time possible; before the beans spoil
when they are over-ripped. After the carefully picked beans have been collected, they are
stored in warehouses, waiting to be dried. In the drying stage, all beans are spread out on a
clean surface under the sun and they are stirred regularly to allow them to dry faster.
When the beans are dried, they are sent to factories for roasting and grinding. In these
factories, roasting machines are first heated up to 400*F before dried beans are poured into
them. The machines rotate slowly, preventing the beans from being burnt and allowing the
workers to constantly check on the color and fragrance of the beans. When the beans turned
brown, they are cooled down by rapidly lowering the temperature of the machines. After that,
they are ready for grinding.
Grinding is quite a sophisticated process. Firstly, the roasted beans have to pass
through a huge grinder. When ground, the powder is then mixed with hot water. After a few
minutes, the mixture is strained and transferred to a freezer. Once frozen, it is removed from

the freezer and the frozen liquid is grounded again through a special grinder. Eventually, the
grounded coffee is dried in a vacuum dryer. The vacuum dryer causes water to evaporate,
while ensuring that the coffee granules retain the taste and natural fragrance.
Finally, the instant coffee is bottled and ready for sale.
It is easy to make a cup of instant coffee but the entire production process of the
coffee itself is definitely not a simple process. So every time when you drink your cup of
coffee, remember that this fragrant beverage has come a long way from the plantation to your
table; in doing so, you will enjoy and appreciate it even more.
