Explain how to determine the domain and range of a function.
Solution
Suppose you have been given a function,
f(x) = 2x + 5
Now,
domain is basicay the vaues which the independent variable can take.
In the above equation x is the independent variabe.
Now all the values of x is possible. So domain is ( - infinity to + infinity).
Now,
range is the values which dependent variable f(x) can take.
In the above example f(x) can take any value. So range is ( - infinity to + infinity).
Example 2 -
f(x) = (x+2)/(x-2)
Now for domain,
Please see that if x = 2 the value of denominator will be x -2 = 0 and f(x) will become
undefinded.
So domain is al possible numbers except 2.
And again for range please see that f(x) can take any value from - infinity to + infinity.
