What Is The Real Lean Six Sigma?
So when we talk about Process Improvement, well, we are not really talking about Lean
Six Sigma or Kaizen or Hoshin Kanri or Theory of Constraints…we are talking about
Process Improvement.
Do you really need Qualitative or Quantitative, Parametric or Non Parametric ‘DATA’ or
Statistical/ Mathematical Analysis to figure out what is the best way to move the
inventory, or improve damages in your Supply Chain, or improve the Quality of Raw
Goods and Vendor Analysis…Or how about Improving the “overall operations in your
area of operations..”.
This is where fork in the road occurs, this is where modus operandi breaks down, where
communications goes from internal chaos due to the demand for ‘Process Improvement’
and the loss of customer and the revenue… “ Hey, lets hire one of them…what you call
‘em..yeah..yeah…Lean Six Sigma Professional…so we can tell our stakeholder & our
customer we hired them quality guys..” (This could have been done internally with the
folks you have, a simple Process Improvement…) You just set yourself for failure!!
Waste more money while you are already wasting money. Cash flow is getting thin.

So, what is Lean Six Sigma. Really.
We all know that Lean is all about improving velocity of
product movement, increasing cycle time, and increasing
value – add and decreasing non-value add activities, and
so on and so forth.
Six Sigma is all about reducing defects, variations and
improving Voice of Customers.
But that is just a very elementary definitions of the most
powerful tool in the world that can be used in any industry
and achieve high level financial results and strengthen the
company’s marketplace, and create Change Agents
through data and training. I would like you to revisit the
LIST on slide 2,so you get an idea of the importance of
understanding Lean Six Sigma, Hoshin Kanri and Kaizen… all
bundled up under ‘Continuous Process Improvement’ .

So, how does Lean Six Sigma work?

That’s a loaded question:
Lean Six Sigma is about ‘doing’ and not about powerpointing. It is
about being out on the floor 80% of the time, and spending 20% of
time in data analytics and training.
I would advise the reader to look up the following names:
Taiichi Ohno, Shigeo Shingo and Eiji Toyoda
Now, I want you to understand that Lean, and Six Sigma and Kaizen
started long time ago, and I am saying since the invention of the
wheel, the photography, the works of Thomas Edison, Henry Ford
and so many more. Where building of ‘things’ became the norm,
building of ‘things’ with accuracy and precision became the new
norm. Having less defects, less variation, and high production
became the only way for manufacturing.
Guess what Lean Six Sigma is?
Lean is all about Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma is all about
DPMO (defects per million opportunity, 3.4DPMO)
