 The Arab Republic of Egypt had signed the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the Earth Summit held in Rio
de Janeiro on the 9th of June 1992, ratified it on the 5th of December 1994. In
addition, the Egyptian government signed the Kyoto Protocol on the 15th of
March 1999 and ratified it on the 12th of January 2005.
 Egypt now has Seven (7) registered projects, One (1) project requesting
registration, Eight (8) under validation projects and Fifty-Five (55) pipeline
projects .
 So, despite that little number of registered projects, Egypt is the leading country in
the Africa Continent in the CDM field.

Establishment and Training of CDM Unit Technical Assistance for Establishment of Several

 When CDM was firstly brought to life in Egypt, there were not a firm or a specialized entity,
on the national scale, in promoting CDM and/or providing any kind of technical assistance to
projects developers who were willing to implement a CDM project.
 So, the Egyptian DNA used to recieve a large number of Project Idea Notes (PINs) with NO
steps being taken after that.
 This problem was solved when EEAA has established a Unit ( CDM/APU) whith 2 main
CDM/APU
mandates:
1. Promoting for CDM as a tool to improve the economics of environmental projects
2. providing all needed technical assistance during the whole cycle of registring a CDM project
 In the past, it used to take very long time for a CDM project to be revised and and get the
Letter of No Objection (LoN) after being submitted. In adition, the DNA Bereau was
restricted mainly to the people of Ministry of Environment.
 Nowadays, the DNA Bereau is being held on monthly basis. Recently the DNA Bereau has
the authority to issue the LoNs directly.
 Also recently, a page for CDM in Egypt has been launched on the official web site of EEAA
where any interested person or entity can find an answer for his question about CDM in
Egypt.

 Through the sectorial workshops, many potential CDM projects
have been identified after which a seperate on-site visits to each
project location were conducted.
 A portfolio for the investors , brokers, consulting agencies...etc has
been created as result of the governomental support for the DNA
and CDM/APU members to attend many international workshops,
EXPOs, Forums, and carbon trading fairs.

 Egypt has already implemented one big PoA of scrabing old taxis
with new ones operating on Natural Gas with an expected emissions
reduction of 25,000 ton CO2eq for the first 10 years.
 This PoA is currently undervalidation and expected to get registred
soon.
 Other PoAs are in the pipeline like: shifting from traditional open
pit chrcoal production to a machinized one, replacing the incadecent
lamps with CFLs in street lightning..........etc.
