In the past years, China's ethanolamine industry witnessed brilliant achievement, both in
production and consumption. Now, China is the second largest producer and consumer of
ethanolamine in the world, only next to the US.
Since 2006, China's ethanolamine production has entered the period of swift growth. In 2011, the
capacity of ethanolamine has reached XXX t/a in China, with output of XXX tonnes. From 2007 to
2011, the CAGR of capacity and output of ethanolamine is about XX% and XX% respectively.
By the end of 2011, there are XX active ethanolamine producers in China; one is idle, and four
enterprises are building or planning to build the production lines of ethanolamine. Now, China's
ethanolamine producers are mainly concentrated in East China (Jiangsu and Zhejiang) and
Northeast China (Liaoning and Jilin), since the key raw material of ethanolamine, ethylene oxide,
is inconvenient for long-distance transportation, and the major petrochemical producers are
concentrated in East China and Northeast China.
Now, it is the primary way of ethanolamine production by using ethylene oxide as raw material in
the world. In China, there are five technology suppliers, namely Zhejiang University, Switzerland
Sulzer, BASF, Akzo Nobel, the US SD company. Although the reaction principle is same, different
technology suppliers own respective patent in some key parameters, such as temperature,
pressure, the concentration of ammonia, mole ratio between liquid ammonia and ethylene oxide.
Thus, the production cost and competitiveness of product vary from different technology suppliers.
Different from major foreign ethanolamine consumption countries, China's ethanolamine is mainly
applied in the production of cement grinding aid, agrochemicals, organic synthesis and surfactant.
Strongly driven from cement grinding aid and organic synthesis, 2007-2011, China's ethanolamine
consumption witnessed rapid increase, with a CAGR of over XX%. In 2011, the consumption of
ethanolamine reaches XXX tonnes. In addition, with the commissioning of some large
ethanolamine projects, the import volume of ethanolamine has dropped much in 2011, and its
proportion in total consumption also falls, below XX%.
In China, ethanolamine consumption mainly distributes in East China, North China and South
China, which are more developed regions. Especially in East China, the most developed area in
China with convenient transportation, the consumption of ethanolamine accounts for over XX% in
total in 2011. Moreover, for three products of ethanolamine, their end users are also concentrated
in East China.
