4. Gender policy
• Objective: Facilitate equitable access to Agricultural Research and Development resources,
opportunities and benefits for men and women, particularly for vulnerable groups, in
delivering the following results:
• R1-- Gender smart technologies and innovations increased, throughout gender capacity building, and
provision of gender mainstreaming tools in agricultural research programmes and projects to
stakeholders;
• R2 -- Gender smart agricultural policies and market policies identified and proposed;
• R3--Gender mainstreaming in the regional agricultural research system strengthened and
coordinated;
• R4--Demand for gender technical assistance formulated by stakeholders to mainstream gender in
agricultural research and development facilitated and satisfied.
5. Gender strategy
Minimum 40% women as beneficiaries of projects;
Gender screening of projects to analyse the gender gaps, propose corrective
actions, and indicators to track gender progress in projects and impact
assessment;
Provide stakeholders with gender capacity building and tools to mainstream
gender in their various activities;
Assist the Projects Coordination Units (PCU) with development of Gender Action
Plans, and facilitate the identification of Gender Focal Points in the countries;
6. Gender strategy
Organize Video Conference and field visit twice a year to monitor the
implementation of the gender action plans in the countries;
Provide female and young researchers with leadership and scientific capacity
building and follow up for their access to decision-making positions in Agricultural
Research and Development systems (AR&D);
Provide gender support to regional organizations at demand
Facilitate the development, transfer, access and adoption of
gender and climate smart technologies (along the value chain) to
foster women and youth socio-economic empowerment

8. Gender outcomes
West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP): All countries went above
the 40% women target as beneficiaries, with 49% at regional level (4. 536.562 out
of 9.246.489) in terms of access to technologies and innovations, Agri inputs,
trainings, and extension services.
28% Female benefited from master and PhD Scholarships in agricultural
sciences, aiming to respond to the challenges related to the ageing of research staff
in West Africa.

9. Gender outcomes
• The Multi donors Trust Funds (MDTF) implemented across 17 regional projects
on crops production, animal production and aquaculture recorded 43% women
beneficiaries, in terms of access to technologies and innovations, Agri inputs,
trainings, and extensions services. The MDTF completion report led by the World
Bank rated gender mainstreaming in MDTF as Highly Satisfactory.

Post EBOLA Agricultural Reconstruction Initiative: The regional initiative to respond to the
impacts of the EBOLA epidemic and the impacts on agricultural sector and food and nutrition
security in the affected countries i.e. Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, led by CORAF in
collaboration with the World Bank, USAID and Africa Rice, recorded 45% women
beneficiaries.
11. Gender outcomes
• The West Africa Seed Program (WASP)
• Implemented in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal but with regards to the
implementation of the harmonized seed regulation, it covers the 17 ECOWAS-UEMOA-CILSS countries
(that is the 15 ECOWAS Member States and Mauritania and Chad).
• Out of 1,582 personnel trained (with 12,656 spill-over beneficiaries) in the techniques of seed production,
agri-business management, the implementation of seed regulations in West Africa countries and
Mauritania and Chad, 30% have been women compared to baseline figure of 5-15% at the inception of
the program.
• In Niger 10 young female technicians were given a three-month intensive training in the techniques and
best practices in seed production and quality control. In Mali, 9 women groups benefited from various
capacity building activities in seed production, policy, quality control and seed business plan development
among others. In Ghana 2 women groups have become the focal points for establishing on-farm
demonstrations to promote the use of newly developed crop varieties.
12. Gender outcomes
• Scientific and Leadership Capacity Building of women researchers
• In collaboration with Agropolis Foundation and AWARD, CORAF contributed to launch the
Francophone Chapter of AWARD, for Scientific and leadership capacity building of 5
female fellows, 5 Mentors, and 5 Mentees from Cameroun, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cote
d’Ivoire, and Mali.
• The 5 women researchers who benefited from this program got all of them decision-
making positions in their respective agricultural Research and Development Institutions.
