3. Every year about 800,000 dog bites are reported in Unites States alone. Out
of them, a few are fatal and require treatment. Out of the victims, 50% are
children aged 13 or below. Dog biting does not always happen for the same
reason. There are several reasons why a dog is forced to or resorts to biting a
human being.
Reasons for Dog Biting
There are several reasons that can explain why a dog bites. Let us look at
them in detail.
Dogs are protective
When you acquire a new dog from a pet shop or a previous owner, it may
show some signs of aggression. In other situations, dogs are very possessive
about their belongings be it a bone, a toy, a piece of food or even a rugged
rag. They are not only protective about their things but also about their
owners. A few breeds are known to bite to drive children away from their
mothers or passionate husbands away from their wives to get all the affection
of the lady of the house alone. Dog aggression and possessiveness are
observed in German shepherds, Cocker Spaniels, Labrador retrievers and
Rottweilers.
Aggressiveness
Aggressiveness in dogs is at times dormant, which is unpredictable even by
the owners. When you try to move them to clean their house or when you
touch their feeding bowls, they may try to bite you while barking ferociously.
Even a loud and commanding voice could trigger such aggressive behavior in
dogs and prompt them to bite.
4. Maternal Affection Turned into Aggression
When a dog gives birth to puppies, she becomes very protective towards
them and does not let anyone to near them or touch them. If you try to go
near them, she may bare her teeth and go so far as to try to bite you to keep
you out. There is no other choice for owners in such cases except to let the
new mother take her time letting you get close to her puppies.
General Fear and Alertness
Dogs are very faithful and truthful to their masters; they never let anyone
near their masters, nor do they let anyone enter their master’s house. This fear
of aggression makes them bark at strangers or even bite them if they come to
close to their master or his house. Dogs raised and bred in quiet homes where
there are no noisy kids are usually distracted and irritated by disturbing
noises and fast moving youngsters. They may bark initially to scare them, if
the kids do not heed their warning, they might give them a slight nip to
threaten them.
Pestering and painful situations
A dog does not usually get irritated if it is left alone. If incidents happen
where naughty children or adults try to pester it or force it to do something it
does not like, they may try to bite. Just as it is common for human beings to
have a threshold for tolerance and torture, dogs also have a threshold. You
might become a victim of a dog bite if you disturb a sleeping dog, blow on its
face to irritate it sit on its back to ride it or force it to do something it does not
want to do. When a dog gets hurt and someone attending to it is applying
medicine or bandages on its wounds, it may try to bite that person. During
such incidents, they bite due to unbearable pain.
5. Lack of Socialization
Dogs, which are not exposed to the outer world, or that are tied up and prevented from
having any contact with other dogs and animals tend to remain aggressive. You may call
it fear or aggression, which induces biting behavior in them. Take your dog out and let
him spend some time with other dogs and animals so that he learns to feel comfortable
and confident. Let other people touch it so that he becomes accustomed to people and t
learns to respect them.
How to Stop Your Dog from biting
To stop dog biting, one has to understand a dog’s behavior, allot time to train it correctly
and help it to socialize and get used to people and animals around it; you should do this
with pet dogs you have at home. However, when you face a stray dog, do not try to run,
she will chase you and she may try to bite you. Just stay quiet and do not make any signs
with your hands. Avoid eye contact with them and move slowly.
In case of a new puppy, do not let it bite you or nip your fingers in a friendly manner, or
it might end up biting a stranger. Training a new dog is not easy. You must be proficient
enough or appoint a dog trainer to train it to fit your surroundings. Addressing the biting
habit of your dog and other aspects are the most important factors to help it to learn to
adjust to its surroundings.
Dog Training
When you have acquired a new canine, neither he nor you know each other. It takes time
to understand each other and get comfortable with each other. There are various
techniques involved in training a dog. First, we must understand that dogs are
descendents of wolves, which are their wild relatives. Therefore, it is natural that they
have some of their traits. However, the dogs can be domesticated and trained to make
good pets.
6. Let us look at what dogs expect from us:
• They expect a daily routine.
• You must praise them and reward them for their good behavior.
• Spend some quality time everyday playing or interacting with them.
• Consider your pet dog a part of your family.
Dogs have a very sharp memory. They remember anything you teach them or
do to them for a very long time. So scold your dog immediately whenever it
soils your home, urinates on furniture or behaves incorrectly so that it can
connect the scolding to its bad behavior.
Use short, one or two word instructions while training your dog. Repeat them
again and again along with the actions they are expected to do so that they
can associate the words to the actions. Stick to the same sets of words.
Balanced consistency of Reward and Punishment
Just like human beings, dogs like to be praised and pampered. Keeping this in
mind, focus on training your dog by offering it tiny rewards every time it is
successful in learning something you have been trying to teach it. Instead of
whipping it for its mistakes, try to teach it the right way and reward it for
following it. A dog remembers positive feelings for a long time and it will try
to get praises from you repeatedly by repeating activities that you praise it
for.
Ultimately, it is you and the dog that have to live together in a single
surrounding as a family. So, see that you train your dogs carefully to make
your home a good place for both of you. Dog biting will never be a concern if
the canine is trained properly and well taken care of. If you cannot afford
professional training for your dog, with love and care teach him yourself.
This will not only make your dog a good pet, but it will also develop a bond
between you and the dog, which remains forever.
