This morning I gave the opening lecture at the RUG-course Social Lab, part of the Bachelor Programme Media & Culture. Theme: Playing with the Power of Crowds. I used cases like Project X Haren and Inhuldigingsdag Amsterdam to illustrate my points. The next eight weeks a group of 50 students will help different organizations improving the contact en communication with swarms of their interest.

  29. 29. Grouping and communication in the old days Power belonged to big top-down powers like dictators, governments, large companies, traditional media. If Coca Cola wanted you to believe that Coke was healthy they just became the main sponsor of the Olympic Games. People had embodied the social DNA of a football club, religious entity, your employer, (polical) party, or marriage. People were part of a limited number of social groups for their lifetimes. From a social context of 50-200 family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, mainly in your natural habitat. Pushing your product / sending a message to concrete target groups of customers.

Grouping and communication nowadays (4G+ on your cell phone and 3D printers) Everyone can be a publisher / creator / critic and share products and thoughts world wide.This leads to wider variety of products and shared opinions, more freedom to choose and... democracy. Everyone has the freedom to choose from many things. Everyone is hopping on and off on everything / attending Facebook-events / relationships. More dynamic, more complex, more chaos. To 5000+ contacts on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram,Tinder, festivals, one nights stands. Murmuration of swarms (of Starling or Sardines) to play and co-create with. Conversations and co-creation.
