13. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
What is a lipoma?
A lipoma is a slow-growing, fatty tumor that's
most often situated between your skin and the
underlying muscle layer. It may be situated in the
muscle layer.
14. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
What is the hypothesized cause of lipomas?
The cause of lipomas isn't fully understood.
They tend to run in families, so genetic factors
likely play a role in their development.
15. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
Is lipoma cancerous?
NO. Lipomas are not cancerous. They are benign.
However, there is such a thing as LIPOSARCOMA
which is a cancer arising from the fatty tissues.
LIPOSARCOMA is rare.
LIPOMAS are very common.
16. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
Where are lipomas commonly located?
They commonly occur in the neck, shoulders,
back, abdomen, arms and thighs.
Anywhere where there is fatty tissue.
17. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
What is the most common complication of
lipomas if not treated?
Increase in size but very slow.
Rarely, does it cause pain.
18. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
How to recognize and diagnose lipomas?
By inspection and palpation.
• There is bulge or tumor underneath the skin.
• The tumor can be any size.
• The consistency of the tumor is soft.
• The tumor is solid and not cystic (containing
fluid).
• The tumor is not fixed to the overlying skin and
underlying tissue like the muscle and fascia.
19. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
What is the treatment for lipomas?
WATCHFUL WAITING
One can usually leave a lipoma alone especially if
small (if it doesn't cause discomfort or cosmetic
problems).
SURGERY
If the lipoma is big and causing discomfort or
cosmetic problems.
20. FAT TUMOR
LIPOMA
Do lipomas recur after an operation?
Lipomas may recur in the same spot where the
operation was done if they were not removed
entirely or new ones occurring in the adjacent
areas.
Lipomas may occur in other parts of the body
other then in the original area where a lipoma
was removed.
