PROBLEM STATEMENT
A young and motivated TEACHER
needs to INSPIRE AND MOTIVATE the
prospective and enrolled students as
there is a big DISCONNECT in the job
market requirement and the professionals
coming out of the school
have programs and sessions with
professionals where in the professionals
talk and interact with the students about their
journey of studying and working as
an interior designer
have real life projects given to students as
class assignments and have them assessed
as such
we need to include a semester where the teacher
and the prospective employee companies together
coach the students
promote - Teamwork so that
the students know how to work in real
work enviornment
A lot of students enter the course for the face value of the degree
but then donʼt work leading to a loss of talent in the industry due to
ʻa wasted seatʼ phenomenon
hold workshops at a high school / junior college level
in the summer vacation where the perspective students
can get a idea if they like the field or not
hold one day seminar at schools which not only provides info
but also aims at attracting the right kind of talent
give a holistic entrance exam -
with personal interviews for
all the students
demystify the whole concept of working
as a designer by using online forums and
answering studentsʼ questions
Assign a particular day for orientation for perspective students and their parents to
explain what the field is about and discuss the limitations and the positives
of working in the field
All people cannot come to the orientation.
Have a website where in all the info
is adequately put up and can be accessed.
What we can also do is that the admission
form can be downloaded only once the applicant
has seen all the info videos and answered a
Questionnaire online
reward ideas (however vague or out - there)
make students feel proud about
being an interior designer
make students feel a
part of a community
promote individuality and also the concept of working
in teams to simulate the real work environment
THE PROSPECTIVE
STUDENTS
THE ENROLLED
STUDENTS
HOW TO
AVOID THAT?
HOW TO
MOTIVATE
have a bond signed by the student to work for a year
in the industry only then can they get the degree
in the evaluation process have an essay question
about ʻwhy the prospective students want to join
the courseʼ or ʻwhat is he expecting to get out of itʼ or
something less direct
improvise the evaluation process
to evaluate ʻthe wantingʼ
to be a designer assessed
Ask them - make them
that ʻthey want to do thisʼ
use negative psychology
Give examples or make the student meet someone who
didn't know what interior design is or did just for the heck of it,
and have them share their experiences
make info on
the field
accessible
ENGAGING
content
have the prospective students
speak with the current / enrolled
students
use radio shows and college
festivals the spread the word
encourage Q&A with a student helpline
have counsellors and admin
officer who will guide the
students
THIS IS A TWO PRONGED PROBLEM - one is to ensure that they
admit the right talent for the couse and then to motivate and inspire
them to work as professionals
have student mentoring where one
professor mentors 3 - 5 students
Counsel students - to ensure that
they donʼt feel over burdened or
demotivated
Insentivise initiative shown by students
Have study tours -
in different places so that they can
see different examples
Have exchange programmes -
to familiarise the students with other
cultures and styles - keep it interesting
New ideas should no only be encouraged but promoted
aggresively by teachers, the course goals and the
prospective employers
More emphasis should be given to getting knowledge
by going on field trips, participating in workshops and
actual work sites that just rote studing.
We need to counsel the sudents before they opt for
he said course and ensure that both the students and
the parents are made privy of the course structure,
workload, the profession you get after the completion
of the course and the actual working enviornment
have a social media page showcasing the good
designs and the achievements of the alumni
have a facebook page allocated for
connecting students with the prospective ones
have scholarships and sponserships
for deserving students
have workshops with
different experts of the
related fields
make the course
studing fun and engaging
to all the students
inpire students to
take up a more holistic view
towards education and work
Multidiciplinary lectures
to get the students
initiated or interested in
many areas of design,
the school has various
lectures from other
professionals
in realed fields
like landscape architecture,
furniture design etc.
revise the syllabus to
make it more relavent
use interactive videos
and presentations
include design magazines and other literature
as part of “Required reading”
Have field trips to the product
market places (for faucets, furniture, etc.)
and used actual products
and prices in the projects -
Have real life relevance
Abstraction -
so that the students dont feel stifled
by reality, have a class where they can
create without being bothered of
the laws of nature
competitions
enhance soft skills
explain why - why the assignment
why this marking system,
why the field trip...
restructure the course with the
help of the professionals who
would hire them
get students feedback -
on what they like, dont like,
after each class to prepare
the next class accordingly
make STUDENTS a part of the process
of learning - ensure all the teaches are
made aware that no question is silly
or stupid - TRAIN THE TEACHERS
