Question 2 -How does your media product represent particular social groups?

  1. Question 2 H o w do es you r media produc t re pres en t p a rt ic ul a r so ci a l grou ps?
  2. Target Audience I decided on a target audience of pop music fans aged between 15 and 19 Perception of a pop fan: Someone who has little or no knowledge of “real” music and follows what is on trend I went with a slightly nicer view of pop fans. I decided to aim it at the people who aspire to be in that lifestyle. The sort of people who enjoy the music and like the fashion, and lifestyle that goes with the music genre.
  3. Typical Pop fan style - Guy The typical look for a male pop music fan would be high- tops, jeans (normally black or dark coloured), plain tops and hoodies and jackets. They will normally have items such as sunglasses, rings and other jewellery on as well. The stars of this type would be like The Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber and Mitchell Musso
  4. Typical Pop fan style - Girl The typical look for a female pop music fan would be high- tops and high heels, jeans (normally black or dark coloured) and black tights, plain tops, dresses and hoodies and jackets. They will normally have items such as sunglasses, rings and other jewellery on as well. This is very similar to the male style. The stars of this type would be like Miley Cyrus, Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez and Jessie J
  5. Front Cover As the front cover is the first thing you see when looking at a magazine the cover images was very important. I decided to go with an edgier picture as i felt that it resembled pop better then some of the other poses. The bold purples and yellows work really well with the conventions of pop. Bold colours that stand out. Most music magazines go for the traditional red black and white but i felt that using different colours would enable to audience to relate to the magazine better as the nature of pop is to be edgy and different.
  6. Contents I used the bold colours from the cover image on he contents page as they fit the criteria of pop. The large header is edgy and different to other magazines. The image doesn't really fit that swell with popular music images, it seems more like an indie picture but pop changes rapidly so it is difficult to tell what is and isn't right in pop.
  7. Double Page Spread The double page spread is the main feature of any magazine so i had to make sure that it followed the conventions of pop. I think that i have managed to create an informative page that has pop style all over it. The images are all bold images. They all stand out from the white background. I chose white as my background as i think that it looks very professional. The titles and questions are in the purple and yellow theme. This continues the idea of uniqueness form the cover and contents page.
  8. Overall Overall i don't think that my product challenges the dominant ideologies of pop music it follows them. The people in the images fit the criteria for a pop star. Young, happy good looking people. They are all dressed in the style you would expect of a pop artist. I feel that i could have done better on some of the locations and thought more about the mis-en-scene to include the audience.
