STATISTICS OF BANK ROBBERIES; 2013, 2014 & 2015 • In Karachi, thirty banks were robbed in 2013 alone • More than 15 million rupees have been looted from 10 banks across Karachi in the first three months of 2014, On March 7,2014 two banks were robbed in 30 minutes. • But after Karachi Operation started, there had been a serious decline in the bank robberies trend; 8 or 9 banks robbed in passed 9 month of 2015; but in year 2014 the number was 21 in same month

ANATONOMY OF BANK ROBBERIES Surveillance Stage Assault stage It is important to remember two things: • Robbers want one thing – your money or property – and they want it quickly. • Robbery is a risky business and robbers are usually nervous. You do not want to delay a robbery in any way and increase the potential for violence. Give the robber what he or she wants and do it quickly. Do not risk your life, or another person’s life, for property.

BE AWARE OF SURROUNDINGS ROBBERS USUALLY “CASE” THEIR TARGET • Adopt behaviors that require observable responses from surveillants. • Rule of thumb - three times = correlation • "Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, three times is surveillance.“ • Look for non-changeable features! • Surveillants may use “disguises” to avoid detection. • Don’t alert surveillants! • Detecting surveillance can be easy, but avoiding alerting surveillants makes it more challenging.

DURING HOLD-UP • Do exactly as the robber tells you. • Set off an alarm as soon as you are certain this is a real attempt; this is important, for time is of the essence. • Don’t try to delay him too much. • Don’t argue or say anything that might antagonize him. • Don’t try to be a hero and out-think him, for he may well be armed with something more positive and reliable then your wit. • GIVE HIM THE MONEY. • Try not to become frightened; he wants only money and is probably more scared than you.

AFTER THE HOLD-UP • • Just as soon as the robber leaves your area, and you can safely do so, notify the nearest guard or police officer / station; if possible, point out the robber, but if unable to do so give them a quick description and indicate the direction he took when leaving. • So as not to disturb the scene or handle anything touched by the robber, stand back from the counter area of your cage and write down everything you can remember about the hold-up. • DO NOT DISCUSS THE HOLD-UP WITH FELLOW EMPLOYEES. • An Officer of the bank should approve your interview with the press. During this interview your statements should be confined to facts of the hold-up, and such subject as the amount taken, bank policy, et cetera, should be avoided. This information will be given to the press in formal statement prepared by bank officials. • Bank officials and the police must approve all photographs taken for newspaper publication.

On January 7, armed men looted Rs 1.8 million from a bank in Awami Colony, Korangi and killed two guards on resistance. On January 20, criminals took away Rs 270,000 from a bank in Nazimabad. On January 27, Rs 275,000 were looted from a bank at Napier Road. On January 29, armed dacoits took the bank staff hostage in Federal B Area Block 3 and ran away after taking more than Rs 2.8 million. Similarly, a bank robbery was reported on 20th February in North Karachi Sector C2-11. The armed men looted Rs 350,000 from that bank. On February 24, a group of armed men entered a bank in Orangi Town and looted Rs 4.5 million. On February 25th, Rs 300,000 were robbed from a bank in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Three banks were looted in the first nine days of March 2014 The first incident was reported within the limits of Garden police station where Rs 1.5 million was looted in a day light bank heist. On March 7, two banks were robbed in 30 minutes. Five armed persons stormed into a private bank located at Paposhnagar, took the staff hostage and escaped with an amount of Rs3.5 million. In Shahrah-e-Faisal four armed persons barged into a private bank and fled away with the plundered money amounting to Rs 3 million. - Identification • Greet each customer. Establish eye contact and remember their general appearance. Good customer service discourages hesitant robbers as well as other thieves. This attention to detail conveys control and puts people on notice they have been observed and can be identified later.
- Robberies occur at predictable times. Opening and closing periods are particularly vulnerable times due to low staffing and large amounts of cash on hand. Lunch hours are primary times for the same reasons. Robberies increase during the holiday season due to the increased cash volume and the presence of large crowds that distract and preoccupy store and company personnel. • Report suspicions activity. If you observe an individual, or occupied vehicle, lingering around your business for a time, or in a manner that makes you suspicious or uncomfortable, write down the license number, color of the car and description of the individual(s) and call the police non-emergency number (503-823-3333). Be sure to inform other employees of your suspicion.
- When you “challenge” a stranger, you do not have to be rude or threatening. Remember to be polite but assertive. The best thing to do is to ask the person, “can I help you find someone?” If the person seems calm, and answers you directly with a name or destination you recognize, you might offer to escort the person, or call their destination and have someone come accompany the person to the appropriate office. A legitimate client will appreciate the assistance, while the potential thief will probably look for an easier target.
