Ciclo Lectivo 2012

KEEP IT FRESH!

Pre task

   1) Look at the picture. What does it suggest to you?

   2) Before you read
In small groups write sentences. Think about the picture and predict what
      the text will be about.

   3) Read

      Crystal Clear
      1. Did you know we are water creatures? Water makes up 60% of our
bodies, 70% of our brains and 80% of our blood. While we can go almost
a month without food, our body cannot survive more than one week
without water. Water makes up our flesh and bones and it is the
essential ingredient for a healthy life. Among other important functions in
the body, water transports nutrients, eliminates waste products,
lubricates joints and tissues, facilitates digestion and regulates
temperature through sweating. If our engine gets hot, water cools it down
and if it gets cold, water heats it up.
2. Proper hydration is especially important for athletes’ comfort and safety.
They also need to stay adequately hydrated for optimal performance.
The longer and harder they exercise, the more important it is to drink the
right amount and type of fluid. Studies have shown that a loss of two or
more percent of one’s body weight due to sweating is linked to a drop in
blood volume. When this occurs, the heart works harder to move blood
through the bloodstream and this can also cause muscle cramps,
dizziness and fatigue, plus other serious illnesses.

      3. Sports drinks can be helpful to athletes who are exercising at a high
intensity for an hour or more. Fluids supplying sixty to a hundred calories
help to supply the calories help to supply the calories required for
continuous performance. It is not really necessary to replace the loss of
sodium and potassium during exercise since you are unlikely to deplete
your body’s storesof these mineralsduring normal training. However, if
an athlete is in a high level competition over three hours or more- a
marathon or long tennis match, for example- he or she may likely want
to add a more complex sports drink.

      4. No matter what beverage we choose, all of them derive from water. And
water also makes up our rivers, lakes, oceans and glaciers, creating the
perfect environment for many sports fans in the world. It covers most of
our planet but only 3% is fresh water. Less than 1% of all fresh water is
readily accessible for human use. As our natural resources are under
pressure, we are undergoing a water crisis. Many countries today are
experiencing very serious emerging water shortages. One person in
five cannot have access to safe drinking water in the world. We live in a
thirsty world and it is time to give water a second though and keep it
         fresh!

Read the text and do the activities below

   1. Which of the underlined words in the text means….

a)…..a situation when there is not enough of something?
      b)…..reserves?
c)…...the feeling that you are not able to balance?
d)…...loss of water through your skin?
e)…...a collection of cells that form different parts of the body?

   2. Which of the following statements would you match with each paragraph?

        a) If you are not a pro, only drinkable water is enough when you exercise.
        b) If we don’t take care of the planet, drinkable water will soon be over.
        c) If you don’t drink enough water, your biological functions are altered.
        d) If you are an athlete, your hydration must be adequately controlled.

        After you read
Complete the following chart with facts about water from the text.

                                    Water

In pair or groups, think about a slogan that reflects the author’s message,
comprises the meaning of the text and represents your own point of view about the
topic. Give reasons for your idea.

Pre task:

                                 Keep it fresh!
    1) What does this phrase suggest to you?

Share your ideas with your classmate and socialize them with the class. (Teacher
is the mediator and guides students so as to make them talk about water)

Read:
Water, Our Vital Element

All living organisms must have an adequate water supply. In most cells, water is
the major fluid in which all the chemicals are suspended. Only waste matter and
nutrients that are soluble in water can pass into and out of living cells.

About two thirds of the human body is made of water. Food material is dissolved in
it and carried throughout the body so that it can be used for energy and for building
body parts.

Water leaves the body as perspiration from the skin, as vapour from the lungs and
through urine. As the body grows and repairs itself, water is incorporated into the
tissues.

Water covers more than three fourths of the Earth surface. Our planet is the only
one in the solar system where the temperature is such, that most of the water on
Earth is in liquid form. This is the main reason why life, as we know it, can exist on
Earth. Much of the plant life of the ocean flora is seaweed or algae.

All ocean food webs are based on these green plants.

According to some scientists, more than 90% of all the photosynthesis on Earth
takes place in them. All water animals are adapted to take the oxygen and food
they need from the water in which they live. Seafood is one of the most nutritious
sources of energy. Therefore, great effort must be made to control and prevent
water pollution as it directly affects the environment and human health.
Read the text and do the activities below

   1. State if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).
      a) Water is the major fluid in most cells.
      b) Water leaves the bodyas perspiration from the skin.
      c) One third of the Earth surface is covered by water.
      d) Seafood is a poor source of energy.
      e) Two thirds of the human body is made of water.
      f) As the body grows, less water goes into the tissues.

   2. Find synonyms in the text for the following words.
      a) liquid:
      b) sweat:
      c) nourishing:
      d) alive:
      e) seaweed:

   3. Match the words to their definitions.
a.cell 1. waste liquid which is discharged from the body
a.tissue 2.breathing organs in the chest of human beings and animals
c.lungs 3.outer covering of the body
d.skin 4.mass of cells in an animal body
e.urine 5.microscopic unit of living matter

   4. The text explains that water pollution directly affects the environment and
human health. Write a list of the possible consequences of water pollution.
      Environment Human Health
      Extinction of animal species

      Remember!
We use the passive voice ….
We form the “ passive voice” by putting the verb TO BE into the same tense
as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb .
The object of the active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb .
The subject of the active verb becomes the “agent” of the passive verb and
it is preceded by “by” .
The agent is omitted when it is a) a pronoun; b) words like one, someone,
people, c) easily understood. (Someone destroyed the evidence……The
        evidence was destroyed )Eg.
        Simple Present:
        The assistant types reports
Reports are typed by assistants (Passive Voice)
        Simple Past:
Somebody constructed the first Ice Hotel in 1990
The first Ice Hotel was constructed in 1990 (Passive Voice)

   5) Find examples in the text.

        After you read FINAL TASK

Work in groups. Imagine that you belong to an ecological club and want to
raise people’s awareness of the importance of water and the health hazard
of water pollution. Design a booklet to give to the community. It shoud
include facts about water and its importance, the consequences of water
pollution and possible solutions, together with pictures.

  • 6. Water, Our Vital Element All living organisms must have an adequate water supply. In most cells, water is the major fluid in which all the chemicals are suspended. Only waste matter and nutrients that are soluble in water can pass into and out of living cells. About two thirds of the human body is made of water. Food material is dissolved in it and carried throughout the body so that it can be used for energy and for building body parts. Water leaves the body as perspiration from the skin, as vapour from the lungs and through urine. As the body grows and repairs itself, water is incorporated into the tissues. Water covers more than three fourths of the Earth surface. Our planet is the only one in the solar system where the temperature is such, that most of the water on Earth is in liquid form. This is the main reason why life, as we know it, can exist on Earth. Much of the plant life of the ocean flora is seaweed or algae. All ocean food webs are based on these green plants. According to some scientists, more than 90% of all the photosynthesis on Earth takes place in them. All water animals are adapted to take the oxygen and food they need from the water in which they live. Seafood is one of the most nutritious sources of energy. Therefore, great effort must be made to control and prevent water pollution as it directly affects the environment and human health.
