A disproportionate number of individuals with developmental disabilities have have affective disorders, such as mania and bipolar, as well as co-morbid seizure disorders. Depakote was approved for epilepsy in 1964, but only in the past 15 years found to be effective in affective disorders as well. This one medication can be very effective in treating both affective and seizure disorders in the developmental disabilities population.
