                 COMPREHENSION
                                      With Susan Zimmermann
                             Saturday, November 19, 2011 (8:00-4:00)
                              Sunday, November 20, 2011 (8:30-3:30)

Workshop Description:
How do good readers “really” read?

This interactive workshop takes participants on a journey into their own reading while
giving them practical ideas to improve their teaching of reading comprehension. To
understand and then explicitly teach the comprehension strategies presented in Mosaic
of Thought and 7 Keys to Comprehension, educators must first consciously apply them
in their own reading and experience the strategies in action. This workshop explores
what is involved with reading, provides an overview of the comprehension strategies
and opportunities to apply the strategies in adult pieces, and focuses on key
components of an effective readers’ workshop, including modeling, “think-alouds”,
written responses, and classroom environment. It includes key learnings from
Comprehension Going Forward (Heinemann 2011), a book that brings together
contributions from Susan and fifteen colleagues who have led the
comprehension strategy work in the United States. The goal is to provide teachers with
helpful tools to teach reading comprehension explicitly.

This workshop is suitable for teachers from K – 12.

       PRESENTER:

       Susan Zimmermann

An internationally-known speaker and workshop leader, Susan
Zimmermann is coauthor of Comprehension Going Forward
(2011) and the educational bestsellers Mosaic of Thought,
Second Edition (2007) and 7 Keys to Comprehension (with
Chryse Hutchins, 2003). She cofounded and served as the
Executive Director of the Denver-based Public Education and
Business Coalition, an organization that has spearheaded ground-
breaking comprehension work. During her ten years there, she
initiated numerous programs to improve the quality of public
schools, including the Reading Project, which has been
implemented in more than one hundred schools and provides the examples in Mosaic of
Thought, Second Edition, and 7 Keys.

Susan is also the author of Keeping Katherine (2005); Writing to Heal the Soul (2002),
winner of the Colorado Book Award; and Grief Dancers (1996), finalist for the Colorado
Book Award and winner of the Exceptional Parent symbol of excellence for its “profound
contribution to human understanding and dignity.” These wise and inspiring books grew out
of Susan’s personal experience of raising her profoundly handicapped daughter Katherine,
who developed normally for her first year, but then experienced a devastating neurological
disorder (Rett syndrome) that left her unable to walk, talk or feed herself.

Currently a full-time speaker, writer, and education consultant, Susan has given hundreds
of workshops, keynotes, and summer institutes in nearly every state, throughout Canada,
in Mexico, Europe, the Philippines, and Japan on ways to deepen reading and writing
       experiences for adults and children.

A lover of the wilderness and believer in the transformative power of the outdoors, she has
been a trustee of the Colorado Outward Bound School and served as the board chair of
The Women’s Wilderness Institute, an organization that provides wilderness learning
experiences for adolescent girls and women. Susan is a graduate of Yale Law School and
mother of four. She lives in the foothills west of Denver.

  Additional Visitor’s Information:
  Weather:
It will be hot outside so please bring light, comfortable clothes, but the air conditioning inside the buildings
  can get quite cool!

Ground Transportation from Tan Son Nhat International Airport:
Easy access to taxi transportation is found on the arrival level of the airport, outside curb taxi service. There
are many taxi companies to choose from. Expect a 30+ minute trip from the airport to downtown at a cost of
approximately 125,000 VND; 45+ minutes to Phu My Hung, approx. 230,000 + VND. It is not advisable to
accept taxi rides from people approaching you when exiting luggage pick-up and customs.

  Exchange Rate:
USD 1 = VND 20,700 (approximate rate as of April 2011)

  Visa:
Please organize your visa through your travel agent or the Vietnamese Embassy in your country well in
advance. Most tourist visas are valid for single entry only. Participants wishing to re-enter Vietnam must
apply for a multiple entry visa.

The hotels around Phu My Hung are an easy walking distance to SSIS (Phu My Hung) or a short taxi

  • 1. SAIGON SOUTH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – Connecting Learning to Life Connecting Learning to Life SSIS EARCOS Sponsored Weekend Workshop DIGGING DEEPER INTO READING COMPREHENSION With Susan Zimmermann Saturday, November 19, 2011 (8:00-4:00) Sunday, November 20, 2011 (8:30-3:30) Workshop Description: How do good readers “really” read? This interactive workshop takes participants on a journey into their own reading while giving them practical ideas to improve their teaching of reading comprehension. To understand and then explicitly teach the comprehension strategies presented in Mosaic of Thought and 7 Keys to Comprehension, educators must first consciously apply them in their own reading and experience the strategies in action. This workshop explores what is involved with reading, provides an overview of the comprehension strategies and opportunities to apply the strategies in adult pieces, and focuses on key components of an effective readers’ workshop, including modeling, “think-alouds”, written responses, and classroom environment. It includes key learnings from Comprehension Going Forward (Heinemann 2011), a book that brings together contributions from Susan and fifteen colleagues who have led the comprehension strategy work in the United States. The goal is to provide teachers with helpful tools to teach reading comprehension explicitly. This workshop is suitable for teachers from K – 12. Page 2 PRESENTER: Susan Zimmermann An internationally-known speaker and workshop leader, Susan Zimmermann is coauthor of Comprehension Going Forward (2011) and the educational bestsellers Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition (2007) and 7 Keys to Comprehension (with Chryse Hutchins, 2003). She cofounded and served as the Executive Director of the Denver-based Public Education and Business Coalition, an organization that has spearheaded ground- breaking comprehension work. During her ten years there, she initiated numerous programs to improve the quality of public schools, including the Reading Project, which has been implemented in more than one hundred schools and provides the examples in Mosaic of Thought, Second Edition, and 7 Keys. Susan is also the author of Keeping Katherine (2005); Writing to Heal the Soul (2002), winner of the Colorado Book Award; and Grief Dancers (1996), finalist for the Colorado Book Award and winner of the Exceptional Parent symbol of excellence for its “profound contribution to human understanding and dignity.” These wise and inspiring books grew out of Susan’s personal experience of raising her profoundly handicapped daughter Katherine, who developed normally for her first year, but then experienced a devastating neurological disorder (Rett syndrome) that left her unable to walk, talk or feed herself. Currently a full-time speaker, writer, and education consultant, Susan has given hundreds of workshops, keynotes, and summer institutes in nearly every state, throughout Canada, in Mexico, Europe, the Philippines, and Japan on ways to deepen reading and writing experiences for adults and children. A lover of the wilderness and believer in the transformative power of the outdoors, she has been a trustee of the Colorado Outward Bound School and served as the board chair of The Women’s Wilderness Institute, an organization that provides wilderness learning experiences for adolescent girls and women. Susan is a graduate of Yale Law School and mother of four. She lives in the foothills west of Denver.
