6. Culture Change The biggest challenges are cultural not technical. Get SLT Backing. Think non ICT related changes, i.e. use of paper. Can some print outs be moved to a Learning Platform. Recycling Paper and Toners. Get the pupils thinking about it. Compare your results with another school. Start small and then look at the bigger challenges. Make it everybody’s responsibility

Welcome I am Russell DyasTodays sessions is on green computing but before we get into that I have a question<change>
What doRoman coins and IT have in common?In the Guardian Education last year there was an article about a teacher Philippa Holden in Brushwood junior school, Buckinghamshire for Romans project created a archaeological dig with real villa foundations and fake roman pots and coins.<change>As can see students and staff a like had a lot of fun. Their was one problem as along with fake coins they buried from local museum some real coins. This would be ok if were not for the fact that at end they still hadn’t found some of the coins.This is what IT is like in some ways what was good idea at start may not of been so good in hind sight. We have had years on investment in ICT just name a government scheme NGFL, laptop for teachers, computers for pupils.Problem is green aspect of IT became an afterthought.<change>
So why should we care about green ICT.Business use of ICT produces 2% of the world’s CO2 emissions and that is the same as the airline industry(The Gartner report did not include consumer electronics apart from Mobile phones) Green agenda for schools has been put into National Framework for Sustainable Schools which is now part of the ofsted inspection and there is an area on the SEF that schools have to show how they are working towards that.English schools alone emit 8.5 million tones of CO2 each year.Also lets not forget our morel and ethical duty as educators. we should lead by example.<change>
All Las have targets to meet in this they need:Per capita reduction in CO2 emissions in the LA area from:Business and Public Sector,Domestic housing, andRoad transportCO2 reduction from local authority operationsAs our new leader he wants to be greenest government ever.At recent capita conference I kept being told my Las that government tragets wil l become event harsher.That means by default preassure on schools to adaopt green practices will be even more.
We have two major challenges in implementing the Green IT Agenda.Technical and CultureOne of the biggest challenges is the cultureWhen you try and implement stuff it sometimes feel like this<change>
So lets focus on the culture change as these are the biggest challenges.You need backing from SLT foremost (just to tell them that it will bring the electrical bills down)Think of non ICT related changes such as information that normally would be printed can it go on a learning platform instead.RecyclingGet pupils thinking about it. Maybe Run an Eco Day.Start small and then increase get some quick wins inplace.Make it everybody's responsibility to be green (companies such as RM every staff member has target related to being green)<change>

But lot of these are patch jobs after we have brought hardware.If we think about environment friendly hardware before we buy it then we get best of both worlds.Few things when buying hardware we can think about it areRaw materialProductionPackagingDistributionCostmaintenanceEnergy EfficiencyPerformance safetySafetyDisposalSome of those we cant control but we can ask our suppliers about them<change>
Lot of suppliers are providing Eco friendly hardware such RM’s EchoQuite range and there recently released 60 WATT computer. DELL, HP & Acer all have there own solutions as well.<change>
Remember buying green still means buying fit for purpose and shouldn’t mean buying at a premium. In USA they have something called Environmentally Preferable Purchasing - EPP.But it has been assigned a new acronym Environment, Price + Performance. As these are the main 3 things you need to think about when buying new hardware.<change>
WEEE regulations is a talk on its own but to give you a very quick run down.If brought before 13th August 2005 and not being replaced with piece of like-for-like equipment then you are responsible for disposal. If brought before 13th August 2005 and is being replaced with piece of like-for-like equipment then new supplier is responsible. If brought after 13th August 2005 then original supplier is responsible. Check your contracts as suppliers might offer cheap equipment if you sign WEEE disposal to yourself.

As promised to get all your CRT monitors replaced with flat screensTell your head that if you replace all your CRTs with flat screens.Then not only will the energy bills go downYou will be reducing the schools CO2.All that can be used as evidence against the Sustainable Framework part of the SEF.
This is emerging field and we are all trying to get the answers to large a problem. So I will take opportunity if you have any questions about what I have said and also I would like to know what is your experience of implementing the green agenda has been.
