A project plan and schedule are extremely important for managing projects.
Applications are available as tools to assist defining, managing, controlling, and
reporting on project plans and to evaluate how the project is progressing.
Microsoft Project is one application that is commonly used for this purpose and

iLab 6 of 7: Task Constraints and Baselines
General Comments about the Microsoft Project Exercises
Sometimes certain tasks must be constrained by dates, rather than only by the
predecessors. For example, the Independence Day holiday is not dependent
upon us getting our BBQ ready and buying fireworks (predecessor tasks) but by
the fact that this holiday MUST occur on July 4. Once we have determined what
these constraints are, we can set our project baseline and be ready to complete
work on our project. To finalize our project plan in order to begin work, we will:
Use constraints to set date limitations. Set a project baseline schedule.
Guidelines
Complete Lesson 6. Print the Constraints Table. (Include all columns of the
table.) Print the Project Summary Report.

iLab 7 of 7: Tracking Project Progress
Now that the baseline is set, project work can begin. We can use MS Project to
track our project's progress and compare it to our baseline. Comparing to the
baseline allows us to check our progress against the schedule and budget. When
negative variances occur, we are either behind schedule or over budget, so we
know that corrective actions are necessary. In this week's iLab, we will:
