1. End of Life (Palliative Care)
Course Description:
One of the only certainties in life is that we are all going to die; yet in British culture we
do not tend to talk about dying or have experience of watching someone go through the
dying process. This means we are generally ill prepared to support or care for individuals as
they go through the dying process. This interactive but sensitively facilitated course covers
the essential information about death and dying and how to support someone through
the dying process and respecting the wishes and Rites of Passage of the individual and
their family.
This course is targeted at carers, health care assistants, support workers and laypersons
that may be involved in caring for someone who is going through the dying process, or
supporting the relatives of a loved one who is dying.
Course Outline:
At the end of this course you will be able to:
• Understand the ageing process and theories of ageing
• Discuss the many “endings” that people experience during their life course
• Identify the different ways that people deal with endings
• Explain the difference between death and dying and the different courses that the dying
process may take
• Discuss how you would know if someone was dying and how you could differentiate
between someone who has a treatable condition and someone who is dying
• Give an overview of the management of symptoms (e.g. pain) when someone is dying
• Describe the emotional, social and spiritual care you need to give to an individual who is
dying and their loved ones
• Understand what to expect when someone dies
• Appreciate the importance of following an individual’s wishes and beliefs in terms of “Rites
of Passage” and after care immediately after they have died
• Explain National guidelines and standards on end of life care
• List 10 tips on “how to have a ‘good’ death”

The trainer will carry out an on-going assessment during the course
