1. LIVELIHOODS PROTECTION

What?
Livelihoods protection is an activity, work, policy decision, etc for the
poor, needy, deprived and destitute people.
Why do we need it?
FFW programme is one of the Livelihoods Protection measures of the
govt. to mitigate the impacts of drought such as mass exodus.
The activities carried out are such as laying roads, desiltation of tanks,
watershed works, etc created under FFW programnme would help in
promotion of livelihoods indirectly.
There are traditional Livelihoods Protection systems existing in the
society came up into practice over several years / centuries. In the
villages certain works are restricted to particular castes, like toddy
tapping, weaving, pot making, fishing, etc.
The govt. as a policy also does Livelihoods Protection to certain socially
and economically backward people through reservations, like the rights
given to the indigenous people living in the forests, toddy tappers, etc.
LH protection Vs LH Promotion
The livelihood protection measure is an indirect way of addressing the
livelihoods; the assumption is that livelihoods promotion is done if the
people are given exclusive right over an activity for making it a means
of living. In spite of such rights there are various other uncontrollable
factors such as marketing, raw material, etc, which may be the
hindering, factors for the sustainability of the livelihoods.
2. Livelihoods protection is an old method of addressing livelihoods,
which helps mostly in the sustainability of the traditional livelihoods.
But the livelihoods promotion is broader it helps in protection as well
as gives options / choices for diversifying into sustainable livelihoods.
