Samuel Theagene, MD, serves Empire State

Theagene founded the outpatient clinic in
2010. For more than 20 years, Dr. Samuel
Theagene has focused on rehabilitation
medicine and pain management, using
advanced technology such as
electromyography (EMG) to diagnose and
treat a variety of conditions.

3.  Muscle and nerve function can be assessed
for the purposes of pain management using
an EMG. The procedure can be performed
as a non-invasive surface EMG that uses
electrodes, or as an intramuscular
procedure using fine needles. In both
cases, the machine known as an
electromyograph records the results of the
EMG and prints them onto an
electromyogram. The diagnostic test is
performed as an outpatient procedure.

4.  Medical professionals use EMG to determine
potential causes of weakness in the muscles,
and to identify any neurological disorders.
Abnormal activity detected during an EMG
can lead to successful diagnoses of peripheral
nerve damage, muscular dystrophy, disc
herniation, or inflammation, for example. It is
particularly useful for differentiating between
muscle disorders and nerve disorders that result
in muscle weaknesses. The results of an EMG
are available immediately, and a
corresponding diagnosis can often be
determined without delay.
