Questionnaire
Above is my questionnaire in which I designed to help me get a better insight into how people
feel about Hip-hop music. My questionnaire was handed out to 10 different people who range
from the ages of 16-18. This questionnaire has allowed me to get a better idea of how to
construct and plan my music video. I also did some research and found of that the typical target
audience age ranges from 16-25 both males and females. When handing out my questionnaire I
realised that the volunteers who filled out the questions fitted in with the typical target audience
for hip-hop.
For question one I created a pie chart
which shows me the responses on how
people felt about Hip-hop music. From this
pie chart I can see that 0% of people said
they hated hip hop which is a good thing
for me as my chosen genre is hip-hop.
However 10% of people said they dislike
hip hop, 30% said they do not mind it and
20% said they like hip hop. As there is
more of a percentage on likes than dislikes
it means hip hop is a genre people do not
mind listening to which is a positive for me. However 40% of people did they love hip hop, which
is the highest percentage on this pie chart. This give me an advantage as it shows me many
people do like hip-hop music and they enjoy listening to it.
The results from question two came back on a positive for me because out of the 10 people who
filled out the questionnaire 6
people said hip-hop was one of
their favourite genre to listen to.
For this question I created a bar
chart to show the different genres
in which the volunteers chose for
themselves. Some people choose
multiple genres as their favourite,
however hip-hop was in their
multiple answer. Following closely
behind it was pop, where 3 people
chose it as their favourite and not
so close behind were genres such
as rock, dance and trance where
on 1 person chose those genres. This shows me that my competition is mainly pop as half of
the amount of people who like hip-hop like pop.
Question 3 I left as an open question for people to decide for themselves who their favourite hip-
hop artist as there are so many out there. The answers I received back were; 50 Cent,

Questionnaire
Beyoncé(x3), Chris Brown, Fetty Wrap, Big Sean, Eminem, Drake and Flo Rider. From my
results I can see 3 out of 10 people chose Beyoncé as their favourite hip-hop artist and wrote
reasons such as; “Her music is inspirational”, “Entertaining music videos” and “Lyrics are truthful
and relate to the music video.” This has helped me to understand that when I create my music
video I need to ensure the music video is entertaining, has meaning and that all actions relate to
my chosen song.
For question 4 I created a pie chart which shows my results. 80% of the people who filled out
my questionnaire believe that hip-
hop does not represent teenagers
in a bad way and the other 20%
believe it does. I asked this
question so I could get a better
insight into how young people
perceive hip-hop and what they
think. Those who said no explained
their answer by saying;
“It represents the artist as being
party animals who are rich and
popular.”
“Not teenagers but people in general as most videos use foul language, drugs and sex.”
“No, it’s only music and everyone plays a character.”
These responses have helped me to understand how people think about hip hop and how I can
avoid doing things in my music video to make my audience members not view hip-hop in a
negative way.
Many people have wrote for question 5 that hip-hop makes them feel; happy, motivated(x2),
energetic, party mood, empowered, confident, and good and only two responded saying mood
less. This shows me that majority of people who listen to hip-hop benefit from having a happy
mood and more confident as it boosts their self-esteem. Those who responded with ‘mood less’
are the people who said they do not like hip-hop which shows there’s a connection.
Question 6 allowed me to understand more about music videos from another person’s
perspective. I was able to learn from my responses that a music video has a purpose of
promoting a song and singer and that it is there to entertain viewers. Some responses helped
me to know that when I create my music video I need to make it entertaining enough to entice
audience members and not bore them. I learnt from my questionnaire that a music video is used
to paint a picture for viewers and keep them intrigued.
For question 7, I asked what type of music video style you prefer. I created a bar chart to show
my results.

Questionnaire
From my results I can see
that 5 out of 10 people
chose performance as
their preferred music video
style. This is an advantage
to me as many hip-hop
music videos are
performances. Abstract
had a weak response with
only 2 people choosing it
as their preferred music
video style. This could be
due to the fact that they
can be harder to create and can cause a lot of confusion for audience members as they are not
always the easiest to understand. Lastly I can see that 3 people out 10 chose narrative as their
preferred music video style, this tells me that some people prefer to watch a story line in a music
as it connects well with the lyrics and tells a story.
I asked if people thought digipaks were an effective way in representing an artist and created a
chart to show my
responses. From my
results I can see that 6
people believe digipaks
are an effective way in
representing an artist and
4 people thought the
opposite. This has helped
me to understand that
when I create my digipak
I need to ensure it is
effective and represents
me in a generic hip-hop
way as many people
believe it represents who an artist is.
For question 9, I asked a music video poster enhances the chances of a person buying a album.

Questionnaire
From my results I can see that
60% of people said they do
want to buy an album more
when seeing a music video
poster and the other 40% said
no. I asked this question as I will
have to create a poster to
advertise my music video. I can
now see from my results I need
to make my poster effective as
majority of people buy an album
more if they see a good, eye
catching poster to go with it.
The last question I asked was how many time do you watch music videos in a week. I can see
that many people watch
music videos more than 6
times a week which shows
music videos are a popular
thing to watch. To back this
up no one said they watch
no music videos within a
week and they watch at
least 2 in a week. This
question has thought me
that music videos are a
popular thing and that
many people enjoy
watching them.
This questionnaire has helped me to get a better understanding of what people think about hip-
hop music videos. It has allowed me to generate more ideas for when I create my music video,
digipak and magazine. I have also gotten a better insight into why people like or dislike hip-hop
and this will help me in knowing what I should and shouldn’t include in my music video.
