4. STYLE TIPS FOR ATTENDING A
WEDDING
It’s wedding season again and it’s back to
the dilemma of what to wear!
Of course outfits will depend on what has
been specified in the invites, the time of day
and may even be influenced if the wedding
has a specific theme or location but the
general rule of thumb is if you know the three
basic principles and follow these then your
outfit should work well for the occasion.
Firstly you need to know the wedding dress
code. Usually this is specified on the
invitation. If not ask!
For Her
If it is an informal daytime wedding then a
short dress or suit. Again for a semi-formal
daytime wedding a short dress or suit is
recommended. For an informal evening
wedding a cocktail dress is ideal. For a
formal evening wedding wear long or short
but dressy cocktail style.
For Him
For him, an informal daytime outfit would
consist of a dress shirt and pants, a sports
jacket can also look good. For an informal
evening wedding, semi-formal daytime
wedding a suit should be worn, any sensible
colour. If it is a semi-formal evening or formal
daytime wedding then a dark suit is more
appropriate, a tie is recommended. If it is a
formal evening a tuxedo (if invitation states
"black tie") or dark suit if women wear short
dresses.
Venue
Your decision can also be influenced by the
venue of the wedding. For example if the
wedding invite states semi-formal and is set
on the beach with a reception at the local
golf club you can safely assume this means
exactly what it states. However, if the invite
states semi-formal but the setting is in the
town’s top hotel perhaps you should consider
dressing it up just a little.
Match!
The third rule to keep in mind may seem
obvious but can spell disaster if not adhered
to! Know what your partner is planning on
wearing. It is important you both dress to the
same level of formality and whilst you don’t
need to match do make sure the colours you
wear complement each other!
WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO A

rules what you should wear

nitely not wear to a wedding!

5. THE PERFECT WEDDING SHOES
You’ve got the dress – now you need the
shoes! Here are six tips to help you in your
selection.
Choose Your Dress First
Do not select your shoes before you have
decided on a dress. It is always easier to
match shoes to a dress. Having the dress
first allows you to find shoes that
complement your dress.
Comfort is key
It may seem obvious but find comfortable
shoes! If you have a long dress, the shoes
don't show so you can wear a shoe that is
more comfortable. If you are wearing a
shorter dress, your shoes will be of greater
importance. You don’t want to be focussing
on your sore feet by half way through your
big day!
Have Two Pairs of Shoes
If your budget allows don’t restrict yourself to
just one pair for the day. One for the
wedding ceremony and photos, one for the
reception and dancing. Those heels may
look good in the photos but are they practical
for that first dance as you are swept around
the floor!
Choose shoes compatible with your
surroundings
Wedges and flats are best for receptions in
the country to save yourself from muddy
heels. Flat sandals are best for beach
weddings and certain older venues. It seems
obvious but if you are marching across a
sandy beach stilettos will not work but you
need to remember that before the day!
Don’t wear new shoes on the day
Break your shoes in. Wear the shoes
around the house or practice dancing in
them. Whatever you do, your wedding day
should not be the first day you wear the
shoes. You want to glide up the aisle, not
stagger with a sway!
Pick an appropriate heel
Pick a heel height that is comfortable for
you. All eyes will be on you and there is
nothing worse than not feeling confident in
the shoes you are in. Also, consider the
heel height for standing next to the groom.
If you are tall, you don't want a three inch
heel if you will tower over the groom.

6. HOW TO BE THE PERFECT
GROOM
Often the groom steps back from the
planning of the wedding. This is not a bad
idea for most of the organisation, especially if
you have a bride who has a very clear idea
on what she wants for her wedding!
However, as a groom, if you step back too
much you can look disinterested in the whole
procedure and risk the wrath of your bride for
not caring.
But remember, it is your day too, so how do
you create that happy balance to make you
the perfect groom. Here are a few tips to
ensure you are in your bride-to-be's good
books!
Have an Opinion
Whilst it is easy to step back and let her
make all the decisions remember this is your
wedding too and showing an interest will be
important to her. Give your opinion on the
major planning points; it'll let your fiance
know she's not in this alone, you are
interested and also let you know a little about
your wedding before the day!
Take an Interest in your Present List
In fact you may have some opinions on
things you feel would be good to have on the
list (and no we don't mean upgrading your
fishing rod!). Remember throw that plasma
TV on the list and a group of friends may buy
it for you!
Don't Be a Pushover
If there's something she wants but you don't
let her know. There's bound to be a
compromise!
Give Her a Break
If she's doing the majority of the planning for
your wedding, and you are beginning to see
the signs of stress and strain, she's probably
getting "wedded out". Take a night, cook
dinner or take her out. Do the dishes or treat
her to a movie or quiet night with her
favourite DVD. Remind her why wedding
planning is worth the stress and of course
don’t forget to tell her how much you love

8. TIPS WHEN CHOOSING YOUR
WEDDING GOWN
It is always helpful to have some ideas before
you head out to buy your dress. Here are some
tips to get you started –
Set Your Budget
It is important to know your limits. Getting
married can be very expensive regardless of
who is paying and it is important to stick to your
budget wherever you can! Try not to look at
dresses out of your price range, unless you
can’t find anything to suit within that range.
Remember if you change your dress budget
this may well impact on everything else!
Have Style Ideas
Flick through magazines and have an idea of
the style of dress you're looking for – do you
want to appear romantic, classic, elegant or
glamorous. Take into account the whole style
and feel you want for your day. Also consider
your venue and time of year.
Take a friend with you
Head out with a friend or your mother. It’s best
to take only one person as too many opinions
can be as bad as none at all if they all want
their input! Remember though to remind them
that it is your choice and not their dress and
ensure they have a very clear understanding
about your goal and your bridal style and
budget.
Ask for Advice
It's also worth asking the designer or retailer for
advice both on how the style suits, good styles
for your body type and size, on cleaning the
fabric in case of small spillages on the day!
Consider Accessories and other Design
Points
If you want to wear your hair up with flowers,
try a simple style with the dress to get the
feel. If you would like to wear a veil, again try
one on with the dress, try different lengths
and styles unless you have a very specific
style or length in mind in which case you will
need to ensure the dress matches!
Think Colour Themes
While you don't have to show your
bridesmaids your dress before their own
dresses are chosen, make sure their gowns
tie in with the theme and colours of your
wedding as a whole.
Be Open-Minded
Be prepared to try on a range of dress styles.
It’s surprising how often you may find a style
you think won't suit you actually looks great.
Don't Rush
Don't be rushed into any decisions. If you
think you've found 'the one', go away and
think about it. Consider the dress within the
whole concept of your wedding plans before

12. TEN TOP REASONS FOR
CHOOSING A WINTER WEDDING
Off-season rates can be a factor for many
couples choosing a winter wedding,
however, there are lots other great reasons
to have your big day during the winter
months. Read on to find out more…
White Wedding
Every winter bride imagines the white drifts
of snow across the scene. Whilst you will
need to pick your particular location in New
Zealand to guarantee real snow you can
always theme your venues to give you that
wonderful white winter feel!
Wedding Costs
One of your biggest considerations. Most
venues and suppliers have off season rates,
but many also offer incentives and bonuses
not available in the popular summer months.
Fireside Temptation
Welcome your guests with a roaring open
fire. Feel the glow and reflect after the event
with a hot toddy warm in the comfort of your
new husband’s warm embrace!
Early till Late
In winter of course dusk falls early. This
gives you an extended evening for winter
warming celebrations. Take advantage by
using candles, fairy lights, fireworks and
fancy lighting designs. Experiment and have
fun creating atmosphere and excitement to
your long evening.
Make a date to remember
The New Zealand winter has few memorable
dates during the winter months, so add your
own for a great excuse for a winter holiday or

Something Different
If you have a wide group of friends some of
your guests may have ‘wedding fatigue’ by
the time your summer wedding comes
around. A winter wedding will be a seasonal
highlight.
Honeymoon Heaven
Fly somewhere warm and exotic after the
event. Relax on the beach in the Maldives,
Fiji, Samoa or Northern Queensland. You’ll
enjoy the beautiful weather all the more
coming in winter and it gives you a good
excuse each winter to celebrate away in the
sun!
Sunshine Stress
Getting married in winter totally eliminates
any weather related stress. You don’t have
that worry what to do if it rains. Guests
expect colder weather and an indoor focus,
so the attention will be on what’s going on
indoors.
Great Availability
Winter is low season, meaning it shouldn’t be
too difficult booking your venue, church/
celebrant and other services at slightly
shorter notice. It’s also easier finding
accommodation for visiting guests.
Winter Fashion Statements
Last, but surely not least, a winter wedding is
your chance to sport some stylish bridal
wellies, ideal for a kiwi bride, or a beautiful
fake fur or a soft velvet cape.

14. THE CELEBRANTS ROLE
Tips from Don Gibson
Marriage Celebrant
Celebrants are now performing 65% of all
marriages in New Zealand. There are a
number of reasons for this!
The couple are able to be married in a
favourite place. The couple may have met
there or made love there for the first time
etc. The seaside remains very popular,
because there is a special something about
water - about the sea!
The Country Restaurant with the beautiful
garden and lawns never fails to please. I
believe this is because it is so easy to
organise everything, by way of a phone
call. Order what is needed. What is more
beautiful, than that clean country air, on a
beautiful sunny day in January, February,
March, taking advantage of daylight saving.
The garden setting at the home of a family,
relation or friend, leans itself well to the
smaller type wedding.
So when you compare the traditional church
wedding, which in the eyes of many people,
is very appropriate, the modern Celebrant
wedding, is more meaningful to the happy
couple, because they have generally been
encouraged to contribute to their own
service - e.g. I always invite the couple to
write their own vows, with the reasons why
they had been drawn together and why they
"want to spend the rest of their lives with
each other".
Some beautifully worded promises are made
this way and this puts the couples own
stamp on an unforgettable
day.
The marriage celebrant's role is vital as she/
he must not only cater for the needs of the
couple being married, but also consider the
guests at the ceremony.
The ceremony should be meaningful and
satisfying to all those present - not too short
or over before some of the people realise
that a marriage has taken place.
I usually say to the couple, allow 20 minutes
for the ceremony. To most people, especially
elderly relatives, it is often the words that are

When a couple decide to ask a marriage
celebrant to perform their wedding
ceremony, they will have to contact an
appropriate person.
How to find a marriage celebrant?
A. Personal recommendation. Some friends
have been very happy and satisfied with the
marriage celebrant they chose. Word of
mouth is the best recommendation.
B. The couple may have attended a
wedding and been impressed with the
sincerity of the words of the service and the
efficiency of the celebrant conducting the
ceremony.
C. The Yellow pages of the telephone
directory lists marriage celebrants.
D. The local office of the Registrar of Births,
Deaths and Marriages, and all Government
depository libraries, have a list of Marriage
Celebrants published in the New Zealand
Gazette, a choice can be made from here.
E. Linku2 lists local Celebrants registered
