- NGOs working in international development, global poverty, sustainable development, social justice, citizenship 6 DECs are small, not-for-profit organisations who work at local level with teachers and Local Authorities. IDEAS members collaborate to work at a national level government, local authorities, universities. Global Learning Project funded by DFID good example. Recently 20 teachers who worked with wosdec received professional recognition from the GTCS.
- Today the ratio of aid from voluntary agencies and states going to the “Developing World” against the transfer of wealth from there to the “Developed World”. Nyerere coming back to haunt us and our efforts to address the structural causes of poverty
- What we do is complementary to Education adding perspectives to debates from communities whose voices are seldom heard. Our work is only just beginning as teachers say they are keen to incorporate GC into their teaching but they lack confidence. We support them not just with the knowledge and understanding bit with space to try out approaches, critical thinking skills and most importantly exploring values and attitudes
- Without these opportunities there is a danger teachers will revert to GC as “doing good” avoiding the challenge of bringing it into whatever they are teaching. The general perception that global is elsewhere and is about their issues makes it difficult to see the connections.
- Who better to listen to than teachers and young people. DVD of children and teachers reflecting on what they’ve learned at the end of a project using the Scotdec Failte Malawi resource.
