Using Video In
The Classroom
Sophia Danino
EDIT 601
Why use Video/Digital
Media In The
Classroom?
Promotes Learning:
 Using video in the classroom engages
students in cognitive processes that
mature and develop as the child grow
and this promotes learning.
 Using video in the lesson also provides
multi entry points of students because it
delivers content through 2 mediums (
visual and sound).
 Incorporating video in the classroom can
also engage students in the lesson by
activating emotions which in turn helps
them connect to the content and
remember it.
Why use Video/Digital
Media In The
Classroom?
 Helps teachers meet the needs
of student with disabilities , at
risk students,and English
language learners.
 Video can convey information
that may be missed is provided
sole through printed material.
 Using videos in the lesson can
create a common experience
between students and teachers
which can be used as a basis
for further learning.
Why use Video/Digital Media In The
Classroom?
 It Supports the Development of 21st
Century Skills( skills that students
need to navigate, interpret and access
information using technology)
 It fosters visual literacy which Cruse
defines as the “skills and learning
needed to view visual and audio
materials skeptically, critically and
knowledgably” . It also gives students
the tools needed to create their own
multimedia projects thus enabling
them to become visually literate
readers and writers.
 Video in the classroom also helps
students develop media literacy which
the author defines as the ability to
“access, analyze, evaluate and create
messages in a variety of forms.”This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
Video In My classroom: Engagement and
Reinforcement
 In my 8th grade middle school English Language Arts classes video is used to reinforce
concepts and engage students in the topic. As a n example ,when I teach my literary unit
on a book called All of The Above by Shelley Pearsall I use video to help my students
connect with one of the characters. The book is about a group of middle school students
and their math teacher. The students live in an inner-city neighborhood and are
considered dead-ends. In his quest to engage his students in learning the teacher creates
a club where the students try to break a world record. The teacher spend most of the
time trying to form connections with his students. To help my students gain a better
understanding of the teacher’s personality and purpose for the club I show the class a
video called Every kid Needs a Champion( TED Talk). The video features a teacher who
talks about her experiences with students and the power of student teacher
relationships in fostering student engagement. While viewing the video students are
asked to jot down character traits of the teacher on a chart that they were given. After
the video we discuss those traits and the students’ reaction to the video. Then they
compare the rea-life teacher to the teacher in the book and make judgments about the
his character . I find that after completing this activity my students are much more
invested in reading the book because they have a better understanding of one of the
main characters.
Video/ Digital Media in the classroom :
Making the lesson more relevant for Students
 Video can definitely make the lesson more relevant for students. When
deciding on videos to use in a lesson teachers should try t find and use videos
that student can relate to or that feature real- life situations. When students
are exposed to this type of material it make learning the content seem worth
while to them. Considering the video “ Every Kid Needs A Champion”, the use
of it, made the lesson more relevant to my students because they were able
to connect to the experiences the teacher discussed. Since the teacher
worked in a school similar to their school many of the problems and situations
she encountered were similar to those my students experience. Though the
teacher in the book had many of the same experience many of my students
didn’t realize or understand it until after viewing the video. Once the
students found the material relevant to their lives and experiences they
became more willing and invested in completing the lesson and reading the
book.
