Large organisations are struggling to make the right decisions for their clients and employees. Implementing service design thinking and doing into these organisations can help them in this process. But how to start and what barriers do we encounter. I would love to share some real insight stories on successes and struggles we went through. And give some examples of how we help organisations in this process. Large governmental organisations, like: the Flemish institution for education (Gemeenschapsonderwijs), the Flemish department for work and social economy, Belgian department for employment and education VDAB, etc.

Over the past 7 years Snook have worked with public bodies and Governments to develop design capabilities, developing a blended strategy for building capabilities inside institutions. During 2015 the Public Innovation Laboratory won a public tender to work on a proposal to re-design the National Fund for the Arts FONDART, based on Service Design and co-creative methods. This case is a singular experience of a bottom-up design process in the Chilean government, where policies usually result from top-down process engineering methods. The markets and the awareness of the discipline are growing; we have seen large companies acquiring service design agencies and companies building their own SD teams. Design thinking is great, but it will not magically transform an organization from product to service provider (... i.e. the next UBER!). For DT to deliver, the divergent and convergent ideation phases need to both be optimized. This presentation, based on academic research and practical case studies, is about the DT challenges we met while accompanying organisations in this evolution toward providing services: Making sure the divergent phase was really divergent and the convergent phase indeed converged towards innovative, realistic win-wins.
