1. From a finance perspective, 2016 yielded no particular trends
of note within financial services, despite huge economic
shockwaves and political shifts. H1’s build up to a Brexit
decision inevitably created an environment of uncertainty, and
whilst the FTSE might have suffered, the jobs market remained
relatively stable. It was much of a likeness for H2, despite the
media’s narrative of apocalyptic doom and gloom, there was
still a steady flow of vacancies across the finance spectrum,
and certainly an indication that for the time being, headcount
should remain stable through 2017.
Clients are indicating that currently teams are top heavy, so 2017
should by Q3 be very active for AVP level or equivalent hires.
Undoubtedly we noticed a leaning towards senior hires during
2016, so this comes as no surprise in a market where experience
is critical to mitigate any risks stemming from uncertainty.
It’s also worth making note of the brokerage market, which is
poised to grow further in 2017. The struggling commodities
market is once again on the rise, and if the amount of M&A
deals in this area for 2016 is anything to go by, there is clearly
a renewed interest in the market. Q3 and Q4 of 2016 were
dominated by the requirements of our brokerage clients, it would
come as no surprise that 2017 should follow suit.
As a whole, it’s evident beyond any doubt that financial services
was not impacted any way nearly as negatively as the political
and economic narrative might have suggested. As such, 2017
ought to perform better than the naysayers suggest, and our
clients seem confident of just that.
