PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS A professional associations (also called professional body, professional organization, or professional society) is usually a non profit organization seeking the further a particular profession the interests of individual engaged in that profession, and the public interest. Profession means an occupation, especially one requiring extensive education in a branch of science are the liberal arts. The oxford English dictionary define a profession as “a vocation in which a professed knowledge of some departments of learning or science is used in its application to the affairs of others or in the practice of an art founded open it.”

The role of these professional associations have been variously defined “A group of people in a learned occupation who are entrusted with maintaining control or over sight of the leg mate practice of the occupation” also a body acting “to safe guard the public interest “ organization which “represent the interest of the professional practitioners,” and so act to maintain their own privileged and power full position as a control body.” This, in turn, place the burdens of enforcing a profession upon these associations as well. Many professional bodies are involved in the development and monitoring of professional educational programs and the updating of skills and thus perform professional certification to indicate that a person process qualification. Some times membership of a professional bodies is synonymous with certification though not always membership of a professional body, as a legal requirement, can him some profession from the primary formal basis for gaining entry and setting up practice within the profession. To promote the publication of books and periodicals on education in library science. To hold conference, seminar and colloquia for the development and propagation of ideas on education in library science. To give consultation service on education in library science. Training and Research betterment of library personnel. Cooperation at the national and international level. Promote of studies, norms, serves and guidelines.

ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS IN LIBRARY DEVELOPMENT  The main of library associations is to herald library movement in the country to spread knowledge and information, hence to fulfill this aim they interact with government from time to time using every conceivable opportunity for sound development of a library system in the country by advising representing and helping in drafting legislation, policy statement, guidelines etc.  Library associations make the people conscious towards utility of the libraries, so that the people may demand their right for assessing to public library service and may mobilize social pressure for healthy development .of library services
  10. 10.  These associations strive for an evolution for an integrated library and information system at national level based on the national policy.  These also bring the attention of authorities to defects, distortions in the existing library infrastructure.  These also provide a common forms for library professional for exchange of their information, ideas, experience and expertise etc.  These work for betterment of salaries, grades services, conditions of library staff, and also for improving their status in the society.  These also works towards sharing of resources and quoi ding dilation of efforts among the libraries.

For which their arrange education and training programs for library professional.  These hold the image of library profession high in the society and promote cooperation among libraries and among the professional of the libraries.
