The Pro–Life vs Pro–Choice Debate
History of Abortion The 1973 court case Roe v. Wade was a landmark decision for United States
history, and it still remains very controversial today. The Court ruled that the right to privacy applied
to a woman's choice to have an abortion, therefore legalizing the action. Abortion is officially
defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28
weeks of pregnancy. Today there are two groups continuing this battle, "pro–life" and "pro–choice".
People who define themselves as pro–life believe that abortion is unethical and insist that the Roe v.
Wade decision be overturned. On the other side of the battle, pro–choicers fight to get even more
liberation for women.
Pro–choice Argument The main argument of pro–choicers is that women should be responsible for
anything involving their own body, "because no one else is living her life, and...she will have to
live with [her] decision [to have an abortion]" (Pollitt 12). The government isn't affected by a
woman having an abortion, so they shouldn't be involved in the decision. Although they're pleased
that abortion is legal in the United States, present day supporters are still pushing for modifications

They are called pro–choice. There are many arguments that fall behind each position. Those who
argue for pro–choice, the right of the woman to choose, have a stronger argument because they
provide more reasons for their argument and they base their arguments less on the question of value
than those who argue for pro–life.
A few of the many organizations that are pro–choice are NARAL Pro–Choice America, The Planned
Parenthood Federation of American, and the National Organization for Women. Among these
groups there are many different circumstances in which people believe abortion should be an
option. There are some that approve of abortion only if the woman's life is in danger. Others
approve if tests predict the baby will have a serious physical or mental problem. Some people only
approve of abortion if incest or rape is the cause of the pregnancy. Then there are also those that
believe abortion should be the right of the woman no matter what the circumstances. The other issue
is time. When is it acceptable to have an abortion? Most people who are pro–choice believe that
abortion should happen before the fetus becomes viable, capable of living outside the mother's

After reading the material, it made me very sad to see what women are doing out there to their
unborn children. Some of them are not doing it because they are bad mothers but it is of a lack of

Pro–Choice vs. Pro–Life: Abortion Should Remain Legal Jaelyn Evans Atlanta Metropolitan State
University The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case
(1973) as pro–life advocates and pro–choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process
should be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association),
abortion is the "medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most
common and most controversial medical procedures". To be Pro–Life means to be against the
termination of a fetus; one who is not in favor of the practice. Pro–life advocates believe a woman
should continue the pregnancy and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro–choice
represents those who believe the woman deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion.
Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated
debate in America as the surgical procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized.
However, abortion should definitely remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom,
victim protection, life opportunities, failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to
make such crucial decisions for a woman's life. Pro–life advocates argue that personhood begins at

Pro–Life v. Pro–Choice
The word abortion can be defined as a spontaneous expulsion of a human fetus during the first 12
weeks of gestation. The debate on abortion has been widely contemplated for centuries. Mainly
focusing on whether or not it is morally acceptable for a woman to decide if she can terminate the
pregnancy. The act of abortion only justifies that a woman should have the right to exercise her
moral ethics with her best interest in mind. One of the most important cases that caught the eyes of
many American people was Roe v. Wade. This particular case set the stage for women with their
fight for feminism and their legal rights about being able to have options once they realize that they
are pregnant, as well as having their personal privacy. The other aspect of this controversial topic is
if someone is pro–life or pro–choice. Typically when a woman decides to proceed with the abortion,
they progress with what they believe is the best intention for the child and for themselves. Both
sides have very legitimate reasons as to why one could be better than the other, but in the end, it is
up to the woman in hopes that she does what is in the best interest of herself, as well as the child
she is carrying.
In 1973, the state of Texas was hit like a storm with one of the most controversial cases. Roe v.
