Violent Video Games Should Be Banned Essay
In contemporary society, the technology of violent video game become more and more
advanced. The effects of media violence on video games has been increasing in people's daily life. It
is still be an issue and have a lot of debate on whether or not violent video games should be banned.
In this essay, violent video games can be defined by
RWJF Blog Team as thosevideo game which represent violence as the best or only way to resolve
conflict.( Pioneering ideas 2010). This essay will discussed by two reasons for violent video game
should be banned and two reasons against that violent video games are benefit for society. Firstly,
violent video game have positive points which may help children develop problem–––solving skills.
Besides, video game are very useful contribution to society––– especially the violent ones. However,
violent video game also have the negative part. One of the original purposes reason about why it
should be banned is violence may change the violent video game player's brain function. Another
reason to support violent video game should be banned is it brings a lot of dangerous to the
individuals.
Firstly, playing video games which involving violence, may boost children's learning. Include health
and social skills. Basically, violent video game particularly improve a player's thinking skills and

Violent Video Games: Dangerous Entertainment
Since the beginning of organized society, entertainment has always been an aspect closely tied with
human nature. From the times of ancient empires, such as the Romans and Greeks, humans have
used entertainment as an outlet to escape the harsh reality of everyday life. Although in those times,
entertainment was considered duels to the death with animals and other humans opposed to the
censored reality shows and formulaic movies we have today. However, there isn't much difference
between the mortal combat that was exercised in ancient times, and the mortal combat that trickles
down into today's censored forms of television, music, and especially video games. Video games

It is likely that violent video games have a negative psychological impact on its players, because it
exposes them to fantasy like environments that do not show the repercussions of violent actions.
The mind of a child is fragile, and any little exposure to violence at a young age could cause
corruption with negative results. The mind of a young adult is far more developed, but can still be
pushed the wrong way through exposure to negative imagery. Take for example the tragedy that
happened at Littleton High School in Columbine, Colorado. Two teenagers, Eric Harris and Bryan
Klebold, acted out a video game they had created, which was a modified version the video game
"Doom." In the game, a player goes around using various high powered weapons ranging from
pistols to rocket launchers, to defend the earth from the denizens of hell. In Harris and Klebold's
modified version of the game, the player goes around killing monsters which were replaced with
pictures of athletes in their school, who were unable to fight back within the game. On April 20,
1999, the two boys acted out their version of "Doom" by bringing various guns and explosives to
school and murdering 13 students. 23 other students were injured as well, before the two boys

Violent Video Games Argument Analysis
As the video games industry grows larger in popularity by the day, it becomes a subject of
objection more and more and people split into two teams as a result. On the first hand, a group
claims that video games are harmful and should be banned because of their connection with
aggression, while on the other hand, a group believes that video games have a positive impact on
young people. An article titled" Why We Need Violent Video Games" was written by Ethan Gilsdorf
in order to persuade readers that violent video games are beneficial and show the flaws in the
opposing group's arguments. The author states that virtual games have considerable advantages
while responding to some of the arguments that are against the violent video games industry by
comparing the results between violent video game killings and actual real life massacres. The text
shows the perspective of those who support the virtual violent games industry by presenting
supporting examples and comparisons that offer another viewing angle on the issue. Overall, the
article introduces the author's way of thinking about violent video games and protests against some
of the counter arguments in addition to offering solutions to...show more content...

argument that highlights how they can be beneficial and compared the virtual games' side effects

a biased interpretation of facts by not documenting the complete truth regarding the Lanza case

The Effects of Violent Video Games Essay
Since violent video games, like Mortal Kombat, were created, adolescents who play these games
become more aggressive than before. To me, playing violent video games is unsafe for these
people since they have the negative influence on these people. I believe that researching on that
topic would help us get the sense of what problems to avoid. I wish to know what are the possible
effects of violent video games on adolescents' aggression. The independent variable is violent
video games, and the dependent variable is adolescents' aggression. My hypothesis is that
adolescents who play violent video games become very aggressive than those who don't. For this
essay, I would like to present the findings from each article that will answer...show more content...

Unsworth basically shows that playing violent video games more likely affects adolescents to
become very aggressive. The experiment was done on participants by measuring their anger before,
during and after their game play of violent game, Quake II, and having them to fill out the
questionnaire that determines their state of angers. The table categorizes the participants in terms of
their change in the level of aggressiveness throughout the experiment. According to the data, she
found that all participants' anger ratings vary; some participants' aggressiveness increases and some
decreases while others don't show any change. According to the article, overall, she concludes that:
"There were three types of reliable short–term reactions in regards to anger following gameplaying:
increase, decrease and no effect. We found that these reactions could be predicted using state and
trait variables. A 'labile' temperament coupled with high state anger at pregame–play led to a
cathartic effect; a 'labile' temperament coupled with low state anger at pre–game–play led to an
increase in angry affect; and a 'stable' temperament led to no change in angry effect following
game–play" (Unsworth, 391)

The Case for Violent Video Games Video Games have been a source of fun and enjoyment for
many people, whether they are kids or adults. Violent video games are the most popular types of
video games. Many young gamers are quite obsessed over these games. Recently violent video
games (VVGs) have been accused of being the source to many mass shootings in the world,
accused of corrupting the minds of young gamers. This is wrong. Violent Behavior in Video
Games Violent video games are blamed for being linked to levels of aggression. Many people
believe VVGs raise levels of aggression; however, studies show that belief is false. Although
VVGs have violent content, it does not coincide with the levels of aggression being increased.
Ratings for VVGs have regressed from their original state of maturity, meaning younger kids can
play these games. If young children are approved to play VVGs then there must be reasons. Adults
want their children to be social and make friends and video games can help them do that. According
to Jack Hollingdale, playing cooperative team–player video games increases empathy and decreases
aggression (Hollingdale, 2014). Aggression levels are not the only factors thought to be linked to
VVGs, hostility levels are another topic for arguing. To help prove that video games do not make
young gamers want to hurt others a study was done. This study consisted of 43 young adults from
ages 12–18, most of the youth were Caucasian American males. The

Essay About Violent Video Games
Did you know that more than half of the 50 top–selling video games contain violence? I've been
playing video games since I was six and 5 of my friends and I haven't even been in a physical fight.
Violent video games do not make kids violent, because kids can release anger or stress, kids know
better they can tell the difference between the real world and fantasy, and crime rates go down as
violent video game sales go up. Violent video games don't make kids violent because they allow kids
and teens to release anger or stress in a game instead of real life. Journal of Adolescent Health
published a study that said "61.9% of boys play video games to help them relax. 47.8% of boys
play because it helps them forget problems, and 45.4% said it helps them get their anger out. As
this study shows, Boys would rather chill out play a game like Call of Duty with then go beat up a

Kids also know better and they can tell the difference between real life and fantasy violence. By the
age of 7 children know better and it is scientifically proven that they can tell the difference between
real–life and fantasy violence. So they won't do the bad things that people do in violent video
games they will know not to. When playing video games you don't even think about the bad things
that people do in the game you think of how fun it is. Furthermore, researchers say that the only
reason that a kid wouldn't be able to tell the difference is because they have a mental problems. So
there is no excuse for the parents that say that violent video games make their kids violent, unless it
the kid has mental problem. Research use fake aggression like making someone eat hot sauce to do
their experiments which means the experiment is irrelevant. The researchers need to use real world
violence like hitting or fighting someone, if they don't the experiment isn't

Essay on Violent Video Games Cause Violence?
Bloodshed and aggression is everywhere; in magazines, in the shops, on the TV, on websites like
YouTube as well as in video games. Yet, why is it that those video games are assumed to be the
biggest media source responsible for the violent outbursts of different individuals? Is this really the
case? Every eight out of ten homes in the United Kingdom own a existing generation games console
and video games have become a extraordinary source of education when helping kids to learn, such
websites like educationcity.com or the VTech Learning System that teach kids literacy, numeracy
and the sciences through their games. However, it seems an American politician called Joe Biden
deemed that violent video games should be taxed just because some...show more content...
If there were no violent video games, would it just be that people turn to other entertainment
mediums such as movies and still cause these brutal outbursts. They are a runaway train heading
on a course of utter brutality and destruction. A study was published in the United States showing
that only 12% of people in a school of misbehaved pupils causing or taking part in aggressive
behaviour had an interest in violent video games while 37% "exhibited an interest in their own
writings, such as poems, essays or journal entries". In addition to this, the idea of using different
media sources as a scapegoat is not new. In the 1950's comic books were blamed for violence and
that was verified not to be the case. So it is the same story just a different media getting blamed.
However, a study was done by the Ohio State University recently to see if playing brutal video
games makes you more aggressive and in turn more violent . One of these groups of test subjects
would play non–violent games such as S3K Superbike, Dirt 2 and Pure and at the same time
another group would be playing the deemed to be violent video games such as Condemned 2,
Call of Duty 4 and The Club. After they had played these games for 20 minuets they were asked
to write an ending for a random story. For example, a driver crashed into the main characters car
and they had to decide what happened next. This happened for a few days before they were asked
to play, what they believed

There has been much debate on this subject, largely between researchers against the media's
availability and possible influence and the game players who feel the connection simply doesn't
exist. To answer the question, we'll look at both sides of the issue, and hopefully come to a middle
ground. We will begin by looking at the arguments that support increased aggression in children as a
result of these violent games. After that, a look at the other side, the side that many young gamers
support themselves. It's going to be difficult to reach any common ground between the drastically
different sets of opinions, but it's time to begin nonetheless. If you're ready, "Press start to continue..."
For decades, the media has been accused of being a bad influence on the nation's children.
Everyone has heard stories of little kids jumping off of their decks and hurting themselves after
viewing the old black and white episodes of Superman. Years later, and there could possibly be a
link between kids playing video games and those same kids later murdering their fellow classmates.
Possible links such as this one continue to fuel the research supporting the idea that video game
violence increases aggression in children.
Gil Noam, a professor at Harvard feels the link has to do with an impulse–control problem (Lacayo,
Rainert 2). Noam says that young children do not think about the possible consequences to their
actions. They act

Video games have been around for over fifty years and have become quite popular over the past
four decades. In fact, they are so popular that a certain subset of them have recently come into
scrutiny and are a topic of hot debate. This subset contains video games that are violent in nature,
which, many people loathe. Those people try to use many fallacious tactics to persuade others to
join their cause. Take the article 'Violent Video Games Can Desensitize Players and Increase
Aggression' for example, firstly it hooks an audience with its hasty generalization that violent
video games create mass murderers, secondly it uses cum hoc ergo propter hoc to provide
evidence that video games contribute to and enforce desensitization and aggression, and thirdly it
uses appeals to anonymous authorities to provide accreditation for the content it discusses. The
article is written by Dr. George Drinka, who resides in Portland, Oregon, has been a psychiatrist
for over twenty years. He went to medical school at Johns Hopkins and completed his psychiatry
residency at Yale. He specializes in child, adolescent, and general psychiatry. With his knowledge
and background, he has gone on to write for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association
and the New York Times. In the article he uses the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter, Adam
Lanza, as an intermediary to talk about violent video games and the consequences that come with
playing them. Dr. Drinka goes on to talk about how

Video Games Make Children Violent Essay
Introduction Video games have become a staple in the entertainment industry. Families coming
from various backgrounds across the world own a video game system. Shooting games such as
call of duty have become particularly popular amongst young teenagers. These types of games
have led to a very popular debate. The question being do violent video games make children
violent? Prosecutor Steven F. Gruel believes that they do cause children to become violent while
defense attorney Patricia A. Millett argues that there is not enough evidence to prove this to be
true. Summary Gruel believes that violent video games do make children violent. His evidence is
that children who are exposed violence experience more aggression than those that are not exposed
to violence. He also points out that there is a negative correlation between the hours spent playing
violent video games and academic performance. If students do poorly in class, Gruel believes that
they are more likely to be violent. He even showcases studies that prove that violent video games
lower people's brain functions. Cognitive focus, inhibition, and concentration are all lowered within
thirty minutes of playing violent video games. Millett on the other hand, is in strong defense of her
claim that there is a weak correlation between violent video games and aggression. She believes that
the state is ignoring the fact that there is no correlation between the two. They are banning these
video games for minors

Argumentative Essay On Violent Video Games
Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and Doom. Many know these games for their
violent nature, stemming from their graphic scenes or gameplay involving shooting or beating up
opponents, and these factors have caused these games to stir up quite a bit of controversy. For the
last few decades, people have debated the effects of these games on the people who play them.
Many believe those who play the games become more aggressive as a result of their violent nature,
while others argue that playing the games has no effect on one's behavior. Society should realize
that violent video games have, at most, minimal effect on players' behavior. The most extensive
argument many have argued toward violent video games affecting one's behavior can simply be
described as that many shooters were fans of violent video games before committing the shootings.
A common example people making this argument raise are the Columbine shooters, who were big
fans of the video game Doom. While many believe that Doom's excessive gore and violence led the
two teens to perpetrate the mass shooting, that is not the case. What those who argue against video
games fail to realize that those who commit these crimes had a history of other conditions. After
many mass shootings, researchers often discovered in autopsies that the suspect had a long history
of aggression or mental health problems that gaming was not responsible for. Patrick Markey and
Christopher J. Ferguson, writers for US News, wrote

From a young age some of us begin to play video games. Violent video games can share the bad

nightmares , and becoming addicting. As young people begin to play violent video games they
become influenced. M rated games are exposed with profanity because these games are expected
to be played by the ages 17 and up. Younger boys realize what words are considered inappropriate
and feel the need to say it around their friends without knowing the meaning of those harsh words.
Moreover, they are influenced with violence. Shooting games seem to be fun to younger players
because their characters could always be revived. They do not realize that people who are shot
cannot be revived. It becomes troublesome for them to understand that pretending to point guns at
people offends strangers and creates negative attention. My 6 year old brother loves pretending to

There is much persistent debate throughout culture these days concerning video games. Common
questions asked are things like ?Where should the lines be drawn in terms of content? and What
audience, if any, is this appropriate for? As lawyers fight, bizarre crimes are blamed on video games,
constant studies take place, and technology continues to evolve, the video game world continues to
thrive and be extremely profitable. While there is near–constant focus on the supposed ?negatives?
of games like simulated killing, drug use, or sex, most people, especially those completely outside

only). In between are, ranging in terms of least violent to more violent, E (Everyone), E10+
(Everyone 10 and older), T (Teen), and M (Mature) (Game Ratings par. 3–6). Although the intent of
the game ratings system is clear, its effectiveness is usually in question. Aside from lucid
guidelines, it is still difficult to get results. Who is to govern the people once the game is in their
hands? For instance, take a kid who is ?of age? buying a game rated M, then passing it down to
his younger friends or siblings once he is finished playing it? The ratings system seems to be
?one of those things? with the right intention that yields ineffective results. The system does,
however, require retailers to check ID?s to assure proper coincidence with the ratings. It is left to the
retailer to follow those rules. I believe that the dilemma of what is appropriate for a game is one that
will go on for a long time. There will always be people who disapprove of something and

The future of gaming revolves around technology. Video games are transitioning into reality. The
main consumers of violent games are teens. These games encourage in killing and fighting enemies.
Violent games are created each year and it comes to mind, do violent video games influence young
people to act aggressively?
Overplaying violent video games can have lots of effects on a player. Overplaying can encourage
young players to act more violently. Repetitive killing can train them to be aggressive. Most video
games are just about killing people or fighting the enemy if the player does these actions too often
he or she can be subconsciously learning those actions and be violent oneself.
Playing too much vicious video games can construct a person violent. According to American
Psychologist Association task force report says, ''The research demonstrates a consistent relation
between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognitions and
aggressive affect, and decreases in prosocial behavior, empathy, and sensitivity toaggression ''. When
the game is played, players can associate violence as a fun thing. If the person plays the too much,
then they can develop a habit of being aggressive. In some cases, if they play too much of the
game then violence and fun in the game and violence in real life can be crossed. Most of the
violent video games have blood, and lots of weapons such as assault rifles, sub–machine guns, and

Originally, the purpose of violent video games is to entertain. However, its content encourages
violence and invites to enjoy cruelty. When playing video games, kids are required to kill a
human being to get a perfect score. If kids are left to spend plenty of time playing violent video
games, they will be obsessed with brutality. As a result they will have difficulty to tell apart
fantasy from reality and start dreaming about killing and scoring in real life. As it can be
addictive, it also isolates them from human contact, which leads to lack of sympathy. That's why
most school shooters are great video gamers. I will support my thesis with evidences and quotes
from expertise. On U.S. News Online, professor David Grossman of Arkansas State University,
who is also a retired Army officer, said that shooting games resemble military strategies used to
train soldiers to overcome their fear towards killing. Usually we feel terrified when we see a
wound or blood. But, violent video games allow us to entertain them. Professor Grossman also
said, "Pilots train on flight simulators, drivers on driving simulators, and now we have our
children on murder simulators." The same is true for violent video games; they train players how
to kill and propagate love for bloodshed. In addition to this, if a child is interested in committing
murder and lacks the skill, violent video games can serve as a killing school. The games give bonus

The violence in video games is not always noticeable to most adults or more specifically the

moments because of puberty and other teenage life problems, but, there are other reasons they
are very aggressive "out of nowhere". The aggression really comes from the teenagers
environment and/or the violence in the video games they play. Kirsh stated that adolescents tend
to play violent video games in their development stage, which could cause them to respond to
provocative situations with the greatest aggression. (Kirsh 383) With teens going through their
stages of development they could think that the video games that they're playing frequently are
normal ways of life. For example the actions they see on the violent video games may later be

Should video games be blamed for causing aggression and violent behaviors? Video game
popularity has increased significantly every year since the 1970s and it will continue to increase
as technology advances. At first the video game industry was dominated by males, but now
almost 50% of video game users are women. This proves just how powerful video games have
become and how it equally attracts both male and female gender, video games are now a part of
our culture. It is a form of entertainment people use as an alternative to television. The reason why
this topic is important to study is because there are usually almost always benefits and risks
involving something. People must learn how to reduce risks and gain from the benefits. I've been
playing video games for about 15 years and know people who have been playing longer. Never have
I, or have I known someone who has become aggressive or has committed violent acts because of a
video game. Of course everyone is different, not everyone is going to respond to things similar,
but just because someone reacts a certain way doesn't mean everyone else is going to follow suit.
There are actually some people who have common sense and know from right and wrong. The first

And as for the victims of bullies, Funk says "that because of the fantasy roles that they can take on
in a violent video game, victims are appealed to this because they want to change their identity and
build self–esteem" (Funk 110). Funk also believes that the age of the child playing the video game
can be a reason why they are affected. She says that children that are below the age of 12 are most
likely to be affected because that is the age when children begin to find what their morals are and
compare their morals to others. She says that violent video games "short circuit" this process.
Funk also states that children with impaired emotion regulation are more likely to become
addicted to video games. She says that if these types of children are not able to play their games,
they experience types of withdrawal, and she gives examples of experiments where children acted
out aggressively at not being able to play their games. But none of these points prove that violent
video games are directly linked to aggressive behavior.
In contrast, Goldstein focuses on the experiments of mainly children to prove that there is not
enough evidence to show that violent video games cause aggressive behavior. Goldstein continues to
argue that real aggression cannot be measured in a lab. He says that too many
experiments are inconsistent with their results to come to a conclusion that these games

Many times, I have walked into a room watching children play video games, but not just any video
game, but specifically violent video games. In which they feature endless shooting, blood and gore
splattering the screens, drugs, sexual violence towards women, criminal behavior, and obscene
language. According to the Education Week Magazine, "Two

have at least one video gamer, and 97% of kids ages 2–17 are already playing video games, with an
average of over 11 hours a week." Some of the most popular violent video games today include,
Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. Children who frequently play violent video games are more
likely to become passive aggressive and view violence as a solution to problems; therefore, young
children should not be allowed to play violent video games.
In our society today, video games are designed so well and made so realistically. The creators
make them feel, sound, and look like a real life situation. For example Grand Theft Auto, is
designed to give you the freedom to do illegal activities in a city without consequences and the
worst part is you get rewarded for this unacceptable behavior. Forbes Magazine explains Grand

The Negative Impacts of Violent Video Games on Adolescents Student's Name Institution Affiliation
The Negative Impacts of Violent Video Games on Adolescents Introduction The future of
entertainment is greatly entrenched in technology and video games are an integral part of this.
Video gaming is utilized as a great pastime and leisure activity by many people across the world.
The number of people who play video games is particularly high among adolescents with a recent
survey showing that 97% of Americans aged between 12–17 regularly play video games (Wittek et
al, 2016). However, despite the entertainment benefits of video games, overplaying violent video
games negatively impacts of teenagers and adolescents. The purpose of this paper is to explore
the negative impacts of excessive violent video gaming on adolescents with the sole aim of
informing classmates on the disastrous effects of overplaying violent video games. The Negative
Effects of Overplaying Violent Video Games The first palpable negative impact of excessively
playing violent video games is that it leads to addiction (Wittek et al, 2016). Usually, majority of
these violent video games have been developed to offer rewards to the players as they play. In
addition to the rewards, the games also entail numerous objectives many of which require
significant time investments to be attained. The urge to achieve these objectives so that one can
obtain the rewards serves to motivate the players to play the game over and over again leading to
gaming addiction. Gaming addiction is detrimental since it impedes the ability of the adolescent
to be productive anywhere else. Many other activities such as school work and talent development
may be set aside so as to create more gaming time leading to dwindling school performances and
overall productivity (Wang, Liu, Zhu, Meng, Li, & Zuo, 2016). Another negative impact of
excessive violent gaming on adolescents stems from the fact that violent video games can inspire
aggressive and violent tendencies among players (Milani et al, 2015). Many violent video games
involve missions and objectives that are characterized with lots of killings and violence. Also, these
games offer rewards for the

  • 2. Violent Video Games: Dangerous Entertainment Since the beginning of organized society, entertainment has always been an aspect closely tied with human nature. From the times of ancient empires, such as the Romans and Greeks, humans have used entertainment as an outlet to escape the harsh reality of everyday life. Although in those times, entertainment was considered duels to the death with animals and other humans opposed to the censored reality shows and formulaic movies we have today. However, there isn't much difference between the mortal combat that was exercised in ancient times, and the mortal combat that trickles down into today's censored forms of television, music, and especially video games. Video games have progressed...show more content... It is likely that violent video games have a negative psychological impact on its players, because it exposes them to fantasy like environments that do not show the repercussions of violent actions. The mind of a child is fragile, and any little exposure to violence at a young age could cause corruption with negative results. The mind of a young adult is far more developed, but can still be pushed the wrong way through exposure to negative imagery. Take for example the tragedy that happened at Littleton High School in Columbine, Colorado. Two teenagers, Eric Harris and Bryan Klebold, acted out a video game they had created, which was a modified version the video game "Doom." In the game, a player goes around using various high powered weapons ranging from pistols to rocket launchers, to defend the earth from the denizens of hell. In Harris and Klebold's modified version of the game, the player goes around killing monsters which were replaced with pictures of athletes in their school, who were unable to fight back within the game. On April 20, 1999, the two boys acted out their version of "Doom" by bringing various guns and explosives to school and murdering 13 students. 23 other students were injured as well, before the two boys Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Violent Video Games Argument Analysis As the video games industry grows larger in popularity by the day, it becomes a subject of objection more and more and people split into two teams as a result. On the first hand, a group claims that video games are harmful and should be banned because of their connection with aggression, while on the other hand, a group believes that video games have a positive impact on young people. An article titled" Why We Need Violent Video Games" was written by Ethan Gilsdorf in order to persuade readers that violent video games are beneficial and show the flaws in the opposing group's arguments. The author states that virtual games have considerable advantages while responding to some of the arguments that are against the violent video games industry by comparing the results between violent video game killings and actual real life massacres. The text shows the perspective of those who support the virtual violent games industry by presenting supporting examples and comparisons that offer another viewing angle on the issue. Overall, the article introduces the author's way of thinking about violent video games and protests against some of the counter arguments in addition to offering solutions to...show more content... I believe he had a valid opinion regarding the video games effects, offered a logical and interesting argument that highlights how they can be beneficial and compared the virtual games' side effects with other forms of entertainment's which outstand his argument, however, he had not used information fairly by not familiarizing the readers with the counter arguments in addition to showing a biased interpretation of facts by not documenting the complete truth regarding the Lanza case which raised a question regarding his motives and his article's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Effects of Violent Video Games Essay Since violent video games, like Mortal Kombat, were created, adolescents who play these games become more aggressive than before. To me, playing violent video games is unsafe for these people since they have the negative influence on these people. I believe that researching on that topic would help us get the sense of what problems to avoid. I wish to know what are the possible effects of violent video games on adolescents' aggression. The independent variable is violent video games, and the dependent variable is adolescents' aggression. My hypothesis is that adolescents who play violent video games become very aggressive than those who don't. For this essay, I would like to present the findings from each article that will answer...show more content... The first three articles basically demonstrates the level of impact of violent video games on. Unsworth basically shows that playing violent video games more likely affects adolescents to become very aggressive. The experiment was done on participants by measuring their anger before, during and after their game play of violent game, Quake II, and having them to fill out the questionnaire that determines their state of angers. The table categorizes the participants in terms of their change in the level of aggressiveness throughout the experiment. According to the data, she found that all participants' anger ratings vary; some participants' aggressiveness increases and some decreases while others don't show any change. According to the article, overall, she concludes that: "There were three types of reliable short–term reactions in regards to anger following gameplaying: increase, decrease and no effect. We found that these reactions could be predicted using state and trait variables. A 'labile' temperament coupled with high state anger at pregame–play led to a cathartic effect; a 'labile' temperament coupled with low state anger at pre–game–play led to an increase in angry affect; and a 'stable' temperament led to no change in angry effect following game–play" (Unsworth, 391) Here, this author examines the variables that take in account for violent video games' Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Violent Video Games Essay The Case for Violent Video Games Video Games have been a source of fun and enjoyment for many people, whether they are kids or adults. Violent video games are the most popular types of video games. Many young gamers are quite obsessed over these games. Recently violent video games (VVGs) have been accused of being the source to many mass shootings in the world, accused of corrupting the minds of young gamers. This is wrong. Violent Behavior in Video Games Violent video games are blamed for being linked to levels of aggression. Many people believe VVGs raise levels of aggression; however, studies show that belief is false. Although VVGs have violent content, it does not coincide with the levels of aggression being increased. Ratings for VVGs have regressed from their original state of maturity, meaning younger kids can play these games. If young children are approved to play VVGs then there must be reasons. Adults want their children to be social and make friends and video games can help them do that. According to Jack Hollingdale, playing cooperative team–player video games increases empathy and decreases aggression (Hollingdale, 2014). Aggression levels are not the only factors thought to be linked to VVGs, hostility levels are another topic for arguing. To help prove that video games do not make young gamers want to hurt others a study was done. This study consisted of 43 young adults from ages 12–18, most of the youth were Caucasian American males. • 6. Essay About Violent Video Games Did you know that more than half of the 50 top–selling video games contain violence? I've been playing video games since I was six and 5 of my friends and I haven't even been in a physical fight. Violent video games do not make kids violent, because kids can release anger or stress, kids know better they can tell the difference between the real world and fantasy, and crime rates go down as violent video game sales go up. Violent video games don't make kids violent because they allow kids and teens to release anger or stress in a game instead of real life. Journal of Adolescent Health published a study that said "61.9% of boys play video games to help them relax. 47.8% of boys play because it helps them forget problems, and 45.4% said it helps them get their anger out. As this study shows, Boys would rather chill out play a game like Call of Duty with then go beat up a kid or maybe their girlfriend broke up with them they would rather go play a...show more content... Kids also know better and they can tell the difference between real life and fantasy violence. By the age of 7 children know better and it is scientifically proven that they can tell the difference between real–life and fantasy violence. So they won't do the bad things that people do in violent video games they will know not to. When playing video games you don't even think about the bad things that people do in the game you think of how fun it is. Furthermore, researchers say that the only reason that a kid wouldn't be able to tell the difference is because they have a mental problems. So there is no excuse for the parents that say that violent video games make their kids violent, unless it the kid has mental problem. Research use fake aggression like making someone eat hot sauce to do their experiments which means the experiment is irrelevant. The researchers need to use real world violence like hitting or fighting someone, if they don't the experiment isn't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay on Violent Video Games Cause Violence? Bloodshed and aggression is everywhere; in magazines, in the shops, on the TV, on websites like YouTube as well as in video games. Yet, why is it that those video games are assumed to be the biggest media source responsible for the violent outbursts of different individuals? Is this really the case? Every eight out of ten homes in the United Kingdom own a existing generation games console and video games have become a extraordinary source of education when helping kids to learn, such websites like educationcity.com or the VTech Learning System that teach kids literacy, numeracy and the sciences through their games. However, it seems an American politician called Joe Biden deemed that violent video games should be taxed just because some...show more content... If there were no violent video games, would it just be that people turn to other entertainment mediums such as movies and still cause these brutal outbursts. They are a runaway train heading on a course of utter brutality and destruction. A study was published in the United States showing that only 12% of people in a school of misbehaved pupils causing or taking part in aggressive behaviour had an interest in violent video games while 37% "exhibited an interest in their own writings, such as poems, essays or journal entries". In addition to this, the idea of using different media sources as a scapegoat is not new. In the 1950's comic books were blamed for violence and that was verified not to be the case. So it is the same story just a different media getting blamed. However, a study was done by the Ohio State University recently to see if playing brutal video games makes you more aggressive and in turn more violent . One of these groups of test subjects would play non–violent games such as S3K Superbike, Dirt 2 and Pure and at the same time another group would be playing the deemed to be violent video games such as Condemned 2, Call of Duty 4 and The Club. After they had played these games for 20 minuets they were asked to write an ending for a random story. For example, a driver crashed into the main characters car and they had to decide what happened next. This happened for a few days before they were asked to play, what they believed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. "Get over here!" The angered and scratchy voice bellows from deep within the strong, mean–spirited ninja. The ninja throws forth a blade that is fastened to the end of a long, black rope. The sharp point of the spear pierces the skin and takes root deep within the stomach of a screaming, young woman. Blood splatters from the impact, and the ninja forcefully retrieves the blade by pulling on the rope to which it is attached. The shrieking, young woman is lurched forward, attached still to the steel blade and without the ability to defend herself. Currently, she stands paralyzed and helpless at the hands of her attacker. Who could be behind the red, faded mask of this ninja? What human being could be so cruel as to put ...show more content... There has been much debate on this subject, largely between researchers against the media's availability and possible influence and the game players who feel the connection simply doesn't exist. To answer the question, we'll look at both sides of the issue, and hopefully come to a middle ground. We will begin by looking at the arguments that support increased aggression in children as a result of these violent games. After that, a look at the other side, the side that many young gamers support themselves. It's going to be difficult to reach any common ground between the drastically different sets of opinions, but it's time to begin nonetheless. If you're ready, "Press start to continue..." For decades, the media has been accused of being a bad influence on the nation's children. Everyone has heard stories of little kids jumping off of their decks and hurting themselves after viewing the old black and white episodes of Superman. Years later, and there could possibly be a link between kids playing video games and those same kids later murdering their fellow classmates. Possible links such as this one continue to fuel the research supporting the idea that video game violence increases aggression in children. Gil Noam, a professor at Harvard feels the link has to do with an impulse–control problem (Lacayo, Rainert 2). Noam says that young children do not think about the possible consequences to their actions. They act Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Violent Video Games Video games have been around for over fifty years and have become quite popular over the past four decades. In fact, they are so popular that a certain subset of them have recently come into scrutiny and are a topic of hot debate. This subset contains video games that are violent in nature, which, many people loathe. Those people try to use many fallacious tactics to persuade others to join their cause. Take the article 'Violent Video Games Can Desensitize Players and Increase Aggression' for example, firstly it hooks an audience with its hasty generalization that violent video games create mass murderers, secondly it uses cum hoc ergo propter hoc to provide evidence that video games contribute to and enforce desensitization and aggression, and thirdly it uses appeals to anonymous authorities to provide accreditation for the content it discusses. The article is written by Dr. George Drinka, who resides in Portland, Oregon, has been a psychiatrist for over twenty years. He went to medical school at Johns Hopkins and completed his psychiatry residency at Yale. He specializes in child, adolescent, and general psychiatry. With his knowledge and background, he has gone on to write for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the New York Times. In the article he uses the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter, Adam Lanza, as an intermediary to talk about violent video games and the consequences that come with playing them. • 10. Video Games Make Children Violent Essay Introduction Video games have become a staple in the entertainment industry. Families coming from various backgrounds across the world own a video game system. Shooting games such as call of duty have become particularly popular amongst young teenagers. These types of games have led to a very popular debate. The question being do violent video games make children violent? Prosecutor Steven F. Gruel believes that they do cause children to become violent while defense attorney Patricia A. Millett argues that there is not enough evidence to prove this to be true. Summary Gruel believes that violent video games do make children violent. His evidence is that children who are exposed violence experience more aggression than those that are not exposed to violence. He also points out that there is a negative correlation between the hours spent playing violent video games and academic performance. If students do poorly in class, Gruel believes that they are more likely to be violent. He even showcases studies that prove that violent video games lower people's brain functions. Cognitive focus, inhibition, and concentration are all lowered within thirty minutes of playing violent video games. Millett on the other hand, is in strong defense of her claim that there is a weak correlation between violent video games and aggression. She believes that the state is ignoring the fact that there is no correlation between the two. They are banning these video games for minors Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Argumentative Essay On Violent Video Games Call of Duty, Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto, and Doom. Many know these games for their violent nature, stemming from their graphic scenes or gameplay involving shooting or beating up opponents, and these factors have caused these games to stir up quite a bit of controversy. For the last few decades, people have debated the effects of these games on the people who play them. Many believe those who play the games become more aggressive as a result of their violent nature, while others argue that playing the games has no effect on one's behavior. Society should realize that violent video games have, at most, minimal effect on players' behavior. The most extensive argument many have argued toward violent video games affecting one's behavior can simply be described as that many shooters were fans of violent video games before committing the shootings. A common example people making this argument raise are the Columbine shooters, who were big fans of the video game Doom. While many believe that Doom's excessive gore and violence led the two teens to perpetrate the mass shooting, that is not the case. What those who argue against video games fail to realize that those who commit these crimes had a history of other conditions. After many mass shootings, researchers often discovered in autopsies that the suspect had a long history of aggression or mental health problems that gaming was not responsible for. • 12. Violent Video Games Research Paper From a young age some of us begin to play video games. Violent video games can share the bad and the good. Yet, their problems outweigh the benefits such as being influenced, having nightmares , and becoming addicting. As young people begin to play violent video games they become influenced. M rated games are exposed with profanity because these games are expected to be played by the ages 17 and up. Younger boys realize what words are considered inappropriate and feel the need to say it around their friends without knowing the meaning of those harsh words. Moreover, they are influenced with violence. Shooting games seem to be fun to younger players because their characters could always be revived. They do not realize that people who are shot cannot be revived. It becomes troublesome for them to understand that pretending to point guns at people offends strangers and creates negative attention. My 6 year old brother loves pretending to point guns at people because he would see my other brother play shooting games and think nothing of it. Common questions asked are things like ?Where should the lines be drawn in terms of content? and What audience, if any, is this appropriate for? As lawyers fight, bizarre crimes are blamed on video games, constant studies take place, and technology continues to evolve, the video game world continues to thrive and be extremely profitable. While there is near–constant focus on the supposed ?negatives? of games like simulated killing, drug use, or sex, most people, especially those completely outside of gaming circles, fail to acknowledge that gaming of any kind can possibly have positive effects on players. In between are, ranging in terms of least violent to more violent, E (Everyone), E10+ (Everyone 10 and older), T (Teen), and M (Mature) (Game Ratings par. 3–6). Although the intent of the game ratings system is clear, its effectiveness is usually in question. Aside from lucid guidelines, it is still difficult to get results. Who is to govern the people once the game is in their hands? For instance, take a kid who is ?of age? buying a game rated M, then passing it down to his younger friends or siblings once he is finished playing it? The ratings system seems to be ?one of those things? with the right intention that yields ineffective results. The system does, however, require retailers to check ID?s to assure proper coincidence with the ratings. It is left to the retailer to follow those rules. I believe that the dilemma of what is appropriate for a game is one that will go on for a long time. There will always be people who disapprove of something and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Violent Video Games Essay Originally, the purpose of violent video games is to entertain. However, its content encourages violence and invites to enjoy cruelty. When playing video games, kids are required to kill a human being to get a perfect score. If kids are left to spend plenty of time playing violent video games, they will be obsessed with brutality. As a result they will have difficulty to tell apart fantasy from reality and start dreaming about killing and scoring in real life. As it can be addictive, it also isolates them from human contact, which leads to lack of sympathy. That's why most school shooters are great video gamers. I will support my thesis with evidences and quotes from expertise. On U.S. News Online, professor David Grossman of Arkansas State University, who is also a retired Army officer, said that shooting games resemble military strategies used to train soldiers to overcome their fear towards killing. Usually we feel terrified when we see a wound or blood. But, violent video games allow us to entertain them. Professor Grossman also said, "Pilots train on flight simulators, drivers on driving simulators, and now we have our children on murder simulators." The same is true for violent video games; they train players how to kill and propagate love for bloodshed. In addition to this, if a child is interested in committing murder and lacks the skill, violent video games can serve as a killing school. The games give bonus based on how deadly the player Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The violence in video games is not always noticeable to most adults or more specifically the "non–gamers". While the graphics in a violent video game are better and more realistic than a general user video game it's more tempting to play. Teenagers seem to be aggressive already at moments because of puberty and other teenage life problems, but, there are other reasons they are very aggressive "out of nowhere". The aggression really comes from the teenagers environment and/or the violence in the video games they play. Kirsh stated that adolescents tend to play violent video games in their development stage, which could cause them to respond to provocative situations with the greatest aggression. (Kirsh 383) With teens going through their stages of development they could think that the video games that they're playing frequently are normal ways of life. For example the actions they see on the violent video games may later be seen be seen as ordinary actions for the adolescent. The teenagers that play the most violent video games are most likely to be more aggressive. Being in an online lobby on a violent video game there is plenty of verbal aggression. The amount of explicit language used against players when playing with strangers on violent video games is over the top. Players that use the explicit language against the players usually believe they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Violent Video Games Essay Should video games be blamed for causing aggression and violent behaviors? Video game popularity has increased significantly every year since the 1970s and it will continue to increase as technology advances. At first the video game industry was dominated by males, but now almost 50% of video game users are women. This proves just how powerful video games have become and how it equally attracts both male and female gender, video games are now a part of our culture. It is a form of entertainment people use as an alternative to television. The reason why this topic is important to study is because there are usually almost always benefits and risks involving something. People must learn how to reduce risks and gain from the benefits. I've been playing video games for about 15 years and know people who have been playing longer. Never have I, or have I known someone who has become aggressive or has committed violent acts because of a video game. Of course everyone is different, not everyone is going to respond to things similar, but just because someone reacts a certain way doesn't mean everyone else is going to follow suit. There are actually some people who have common sense and know from right and wrong. The first article "The effects of violent video games. Do they affect our behavior?" by Brad J. Bushman has some valuable information and solid points. However it fails to provide factual data, author often contradicts himself, and doesn't put situations in general. • 18. Violent Video Games Made Me Do It School shootings years ago in Paducah, Kentucky; Jonesboro, Arkansas; and Littleton Colorado, have raised the question time and time again. Do violent video games have an influence on children and their aggressive behavior? In all three of these brutal shootings, all the shooters were students who habitually played violent video games. The Columbine High School students who murdered thirteen and wounded twenty–three in Littleton before committing suicide after the shooting, enjoyed playing Doom, a bloody and violent video game. One of the shooters made a customized version of Doom: two shooters, unlimited ammunition, extra weapons, and victims who couldn't fight back. This customized version of the game...show more content... And as for the victims of bullies, Funk says "that because of the fantasy roles that they can take on in a violent video game, victims are appealed to this because they want to change their identity and build self–esteem" (Funk 110). Funk also believes that the age of the child playing the video game can be a reason why they are affected. She says that children that are below the age of 12 are most likely to be affected because that is the age when children begin to find what their morals are and compare their morals to others. She says that violent video games "short circuit" this process. Funk also states that children with impaired emotion regulation are more likely to become addicted to video games. She says that if these types of children are not able to play their games, they experience types of withdrawal, and she gives examples of experiments where children acted out aggressively at not being able to play their games. But none of these points prove that violent video games are directly linked to aggressive behavior. In contrast, Goldstein focuses on the experiments of mainly children to prove that there is not enough evidence to show that violent video games cause aggressive behavior. Goldstein continues to argue that real aggression cannot be measured in a lab. He says that too many experiments are inconsistent with their results to come to a conclusion that these games Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Many times, I have walked into a room watching children play video games, but not just any video game, but specifically violent video games. In which they feature endless shooting, blood and gore splattering the screens, drugs, sexual violence towards women, criminal behavior, and obscene language. According to the Education Week Magazine, "Two –thirds of all households in the US have at least one video gamer, and 97% of kids ages 2–17 are already playing video games, with an average of over 11 hours a week." Some of the most popular violent video games today include, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. Children who frequently play violent video games are more likely to become passive aggressive and view violence as a solution to problems; therefore, young children should not be allowed to play violent video games. In our society today, video games are designed so well and made so realistically. The creators make them feel, sound, and look like a real life situation. For example Grand Theft Auto, is designed to give you the freedom to do illegal activities in a city without consequences and the worst part is you get rewarded for this unacceptable behavior. Forbes Magazine explains Grand Theft Auto,"We can drive through stop lights, mow over civilians, crash and die and start over, get in ridiculous gunfights and still walk away on two feet. Or even just go shopping, or play golf, or hunt. We are given a vast canvas of possibilities, and the freedom to pretend to break bad in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Violent Video Games Essay The Negative Impacts of Violent Video Games on Adolescents Student's Name Institution Affiliation The Negative Impacts of Violent Video Games on Adolescents Introduction The future of entertainment is greatly entrenched in technology and video games are an integral part of this. Video gaming is utilized as a great pastime and leisure activity by many people across the world. The number of people who play video games is particularly high among adolescents with a recent survey showing that 97% of Americans aged between 12–17 regularly play video games (Wittek et al, 2016). However, despite the entertainment benefits of video games, overplaying violent video games negatively impacts of teenagers and adolescents. The purpose of this paper is to explore the negative impacts of excessive violent video gaming on adolescents with the sole aim of informing classmates on the disastrous effects of overplaying violent video games. The Negative Effects of Overplaying Violent Video Games The first palpable negative impact of excessively playing violent video games is that it leads to addiction (Wittek et al, 2016). Usually, majority of these violent video games have been developed to offer rewards to the players as they play. In addition to the rewards, the games also entail numerous objectives many of which require significant time investments to be attained. The urge to achieve these objectives so that one can obtain the rewards serves to motivate the players to play the game over and over again leading to gaming addiction. Gaming addiction is detrimental since it impedes the ability of the adolescent to be productive anywhere else. Many other activities such as school work and talent development may be set aside so as to create more gaming time leading to dwindling school performances and overall productivity (Wang, Liu, Zhu, Meng, Li, & Zuo, 2016). Another negative impact of excessive violent gaming on adolescents stems from the fact that violent video games can inspire aggressive and violent tendencies among players (Milani et al, 2015). Many violent video games involve missions and objectives that are characterized with lots of killings and violence. Also, these games offer rewards for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
