This course is part of an ongoing collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast
and The ACADEMY by DHI.
The three-day, hands-on course will give you a basic introduction to the underlying
science behind wave and tidal models to help you better understand their
application. You will then learn how to use and interpret the results of the two-
dimensional hydrodynamic model MIKE 21 FMHD and the spectral wave model
MIKE 21 SW.
Typical application areas for MIKE 21 FMHD include assessment of hydrodynamic
conditions in non-stratified waters, coastal and inland flooding, storm surge
development, forecast and warning systems. The module simulates unsteady flows
within a specified domain taking into account bathymetry, local sources and
external forcing. The hydrodynamic module provides the basis for additional
calculations such as sand and mud transport, transport of heat and dissolved
materials, oil spill, agent based modelling and ecology.
MIKE 21 SW is used for the assessment of wave climates in offshore and coastal
areas and is particularly applicable for wave prediction and analysis on regional and
local scales.
COURSE TOPICS
 Theory of tides, tidal analysis and coastal water levels
 Bathymetry, flexible mesh and boundary development for models
 Numerical modelling with MIKE 21 FMHD
 Basic wave theory and introduction to spectral wave models
 Numerical modelling with MIKE 21 SW
 Understanding and improving your wave model results
 Calibration and validation of models
 Hands-on exercises
TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES
Either early career professionals or those changing disciplines who wish to
understand both the underlying sciences of wave and tidal models and their
practical application in engineering consultancy.

UNDERSTANDING THE COASTAL OCEAN
A foundation course in the modelling of waves and tides
THE ACADEMY BY DHI
THE ACADEMY offers a palette of courses and capacity building packages designed to fit your needs
and challenges. Our training courses are offered as standard and/or as tailored training.
MIKE by DHI courses focus on practical skills, hands-on exercises and on teaching you how to get
the most out of your software.
Thematic courses allow you to apply concepts, applications and decision support principles to the
entire business process within current areas such as aquaculture & agriculture, energy, climate
change, flooding, coast & marine, surface & groundwater, urban water, industry, environment &
ecosystems, product safety & environmental risk, etc.
MIKE CUSTOMISED by DHI courses enable you to understand the power of the MIKE
CUSTOMISED tools for building decision support systems.
Our trainers are experienced professionals, many of whom are recognised international experts in
their fields. The use of highly skilled trainers guarantees the quality of THE ACADEMY courses.
This course constitutes a basic platform for further marine
courses and activities.

Understanding the Coastal Ocean A foundation course in numerical modelling of waves and tides

  • 1. ©DHI This course is part of an ongoing collaboration between Queen’s University Belfast and The ACADEMY by DHI. The three-day, hands-on course will give you a basic introduction to the underlying science behind wave and tidal models to help you better understand their application. You will then learn how to use and interpret the results of the two- dimensional hydrodynamic model MIKE 21 FMHD and the spectral wave model MIKE 21 SW. Typical application areas for MIKE 21 FMHD include assessment of hydrodynamic conditions in non-stratified waters, coastal and inland flooding, storm surge development, forecast and warning systems. The module simulates unsteady flows within a specified domain taking into account bathymetry, local sources and external forcing. The hydrodynamic module provides the basis for additional calculations such as sand and mud transport, transport of heat and dissolved materials, oil spill, agent based modelling and ecology. MIKE 21 SW is used for the assessment of wave climates in offshore and coastal areas and is particularly applicable for wave prediction and analysis on regional and local scales. COURSE TOPICS  Theory of tides, tidal analysis and coastal water levels  Bathymetry, flexible mesh and boundary development for models  Numerical modelling with MIKE 21 FMHD  Basic wave theory and introduction to spectral wave models  Numerical modelling with MIKE 21 SW  Understanding and improving your wave model results  Calibration and validation of models  Hands-on exercises TARGET GROUP AND PREREQUISITES Either early career professionals or those changing disciplines who wish to understand both the underlying sciences of wave and tidal models and their practical application in engineering consultancy.
