Four Styles of Creative Intelligence
1. Intuitive: Focuses on results and relies on past experience to guide actions.
2. Innovative: Concentrates on problem-solving, is systematic, and relies on data.
3. Imaginative: Is able to visualize opportunities, is artistic, enjoys writing, and thinks “out of
the box.”
4. Inspirational: Focuses on social change and the giving of self toward that end.
Five Forces / Mental Models
1. Environmental
2. Hereditary
3. Education
4. Genetic
5. Past experiences
2. The four styles of creative intelligence are:
1. Intuitive
Goal oriented
Common sense approach
Problem-solver
It focuses on results as it is more goal oriented and on past experiences to guide the decision
making (Rowe, 2004). Past is important because many decisions taken in the past consists of
mistakes and failures and the decision maker can well learn from these failures by avoiding their
repetitions in the future course of actions. From business perspective, managers take into account
patterns and take cautions from their past experiences. Strategic planning is a situation that
allows top management to prepare for all sorts of scenarios by forecasting possible outcomes.
Apart from past experience, it is the common sense that needs to be applied in every specific
situation. Some of the largest mistakes can be blamed on past because managers took those
decisions keeping the past environmental situations into consideration. But, today business
organizations have become very dynamic and volatile and changes are required to be made as
per the environmental conditions. Environment may consist of Political, Social, Technological
and Economic conditions. But, if business operates in considerable stable environmental
conditions, it may use the similar business strategy that were successful I the past. The basic
approach of the decision maker is take on the problem as a challenge and should spend
considerable time in defining and understanding the problem before seeking and solution to it.
As Peter Ducker had rightly said “Problem that is well defined is half solved”.
Example of Intuitive Decision: BP along with Shell has been making a major strategic move in
search for core oil and gas business, which is a retreat from earlier strategy of search for
alternative energy. The deeper analysis of the disaster has revealed that it was an effort to save
3. some amount expenditures which BP management thought to be redundant at that point of time.
This was one of the biggest disasters of oil spill of Gulf of Mexico. Deeper analysis and research
has shown that it was an accident which could have been avoided. As per the past records, the rig
should have been replaced more frequently than what the recent practices into which the
engineers and technicians had indulged into. The premises which led to this practice was (1) Non
occurrence of accidents in the past and (2) Without developing sound logic, the discontinuance
of the previous practices.

2. Innovative
Takes original approach
Experimenter
Applies systematic enquiry approach
Innovative styles of thinkers take original approach and have the tendency to focus on the issues
at hand and evidences in front of them. They are most logical in their approach and carry out
experiments by apply theoretical concepts to a particular problem. They go by visible evidences
such as data and may conduct experiment to verify facts. Their objective is to verify and balance
different mindsets. This is a typical scientist and inventor approach to innovate new idea.
3. Imaginative
Risk taker
Imaginative
Independent thinker
The imaginative style of creative intelligence is possessed by those individuals who have strong
leadership qualities (Rowe, 2004). Their decision making process in the organization is specially
called for when chaos arises and they have good skill to cope with people of divergent behaviors.
Such people have unique ability to stay poised and instill strong sense of confidence that
influence everyone in the organization. Such people create an amicable working atmosphere in
the organization. This allows them to envision and plan for the future course of action.
Limitation with such people is that they are not focused for immediate future because they have
4. problem solving attitude under long perspective. They are independent thinker are willing to take
risk by walking an extra mile without foreseeable immediate reward.
4. Inspirational
Social awareness
Selfless
Courage of convictions
This mindset focuses more on social change. Such people inspire their followers and they have
strong ability to seek alternative solutions. They have strong social awareness and score very
high on affiliations for people. Such people have more positive energy and they are more focused
in their approach. Inspirational individuals see the end results more through promoting change.
Like imaginative decision maker, their focus is less on day-to-day functioning and decision
making as they are looking at the larger picture.
Creativity contributes to the development of marketable attributes which enables to overcome
unique problems that may have arisen. Creative act influence both the process and the outcomes.
Example of Imaginative and Inspirational decision maker: Alan Mulally had shown
that he was a transformational leader. The transformational leader is always ready to uplift the
morale and spirit to perform at a much higher level. Mulally inspired every member of the Ford
Motor Co. by stating a vision that by 2012 It would become a profitable company. He had his
visions on the basis of various plans ready for the future course of action. He never tried to
impose his vision but, tried to convince them that how the turn around of Form Motor is going to
take shape in the future. His plan to sell off Land Rovers, Aston Martin, and Jaguars to Tatas of
India and to focus efforts on small cars. He is willing to take the pain of convincing the people
because, initially most of the people are speaking that how on earth could the Ford be turn
around. Mulally promised to transform the ford by clarifying the route the employees of Ford are
going to tread to achieve the unachievable. The reason for refusing the bail out package from US
Government. Inspite of hardships and losses year after year, he chose to follow the route
different from Chrysler and GM and he convinced it could be possible. The course of actions like
launch of electric car in the year 2011, producing more fuel efficient cars, spreading wings in
Asian markets in spite of tough competitions.
