Faculty & Student Use and Opinions of E-Books at University of MarylandTimothy Hackman
This survey examined faculty and student use and opinions of e-books at the University of Maryland. Over 1,300 students, faculty and staff responded. The majority of respondents were graduate students. Respondents reported using e-books most often for research purposes compared to recreational reading. While e-book usage has increased in the past three years, print books are still preferred for certain subjects. The primary sources for e-books were library databases and Google Books.
Late night services at the University of Maryland Libraries have expanded over the years. McKeldin Library is now open until 8 AM Sunday through Thursday during fall and spring semesters, offering circulation, equipment loans, reserves, and tech help overnight. Staffing has increased to include 3.5 FTE staff and around 120 student hours per week. However, challenges remain such as ensuring safety, adequate supervision, effective communication, proper training, sufficient staffing, and maintenance during late hours.
