Libraries as Learning Institutions - An Informal History by Dr Ian McShane, Senior Research Fellow, Urban and Social Sciences, RMIT

  1. 1. • Alistair Black: the public library is viewed superficially as an uncontroversial cultural institution, without a history, meaning all things to all people and commanding a ready acceptance which verges on the taken for granted. Its social neutrality and impartiality are almost mythical.
  2. 2. Scott Bennett: learning paradigms in libraries
  3. 3. Munn and Pitt: “The frankness with which the librarian insisted that it is the institute’s function to ‘amuse the ratepayers, not to edify them’, was at least completely honest.”
  4. 4. Scott Bennett: learning paradigms in libraries
  5. 5. McShane’s modification of Bennett
